SINGING ABOUT HISTORY

I STILL can’t get that “Battle Of New Orleans” song out of my head. The chorus section keep rolling over in an endless loop.  I especially like the part “we fired our guns and the British kept a coming, there wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago”

Anyway, Horton has some other historical songs … so, for shits and giggles, and to help give Admin a break, here they are.  Some good stuff, educational …. really.

JOHNNY REB —- (live performance)

SINK THE BISMARK

BATTLE OF BULL RUN

JOHN PAUL JONES

JIM BRIDGER

COMANCHE – THE BRAVE HORSE … (song about Custer’s last stand)

CHEROKEE BOOGIE —– NOT a historical song …. however the video consists entirely of 1950’s era pinup-girl posters … very nicely done.

Lastly … also not a historical song …. rather a Who Does It Better … a little rockabilly music

Wow. That brings back some memories.

My dad was a huge Johnny Horton fan when I was kid. By the time I was 8 I could sing “Sink the Bismarck” from memory. 🙂

Haven’t listened to it in decades. Thanks for this – it put a smile on my face!

Cheers!
Francis

Oh, Stucky! I also grew up with this kind of music. My Dad loved classic country, Jim Reeves, Jimmy Horton et’al. Imagine the shock on some Americans faces when started singing “North To Alaska” in a weird African accent…Ha Ha. I love this music reminds me of many days in Dads car commuting.

Dammit Stucky, I saw the link to the Battle of New Orleans, but didn’t click on it, not having a clue nor the time.

Then you mention “the British kept a comin’ ” and it started playing, so I just clicked over and listened to it when I should be sleeping…lol

Yep, now you have done it. That song was a childhood earworm that I had, somehow, completely forgotten until now.

The memories are flooding back. There was a solid three or four years where I loved show tunes and things like this. Dad had the Readers Digest Music Set and I wore out the record this was on. (Bushel and a Peck volume died too).

I can remember racing around town on my ten speed (bought myself for my tenth birthday), and singing that specific song. Hiking along the abandoned railroad tracks, picking mulberries, exploring abandoned buildings with The Battle of New Orleans running through my head. Wow.

I’ll let you know in a couple days if the worm is back. Hugs Big Guy.
