The VW “Fix” (Or: Don’t Take Any Wooden Nickels)

Guest Post by Eric Peters

Never take a wooden nickel.VW card pic

Or a “credit card” from VW.

Reportedly, the under-siege automaker is going to send out prepaid credit cards (see here) to  people who own one of the diesel-powered models VW adjusted to “cheat” government emissions tests.

But the catch is that you have to bring the car in to a VW dealer in order to “validate” the card.

The card – the lure of cash, that is – is kind of like the piece of cheese you place on the business end of a mousetrap. Both serve the same purpose.

In the case of the card, the whole object is not to give VW owners “free” money – or to regain their confidence.

It is to get their hands on the cars.VW lead 2

To “fix” them.

That is, to reprogram them. So that they perform less well (i.e., not as much power/performance, reduced fuel economy).

But they will be in compliance with EPA’s insane emissions control fatwas.

They will emit a fraction of a percent less of this or that – and it will appease the EPA.

For now.

But you – the owner – may not be happy with the way your car runs after it is “fixed.”clover nickel

It will be interesting to see what happens to the goodwill of VW owners when they find their cars don’t run as well, having been “fixed.” When they notice a drop in fuel efficiency, especially.

This will be interesting on multiple levels, not just the customer level.

VW owners could reasonably claim they’ve been defrauded. Few probably care much about their car emitting a fraction of a percent more of an unseen gas that has caused no tangible harm to any actual person (EPA “projects” – that is, it confects – that about 60 theoretical – but not actual – “victims” will die from asthma attacks and so on as a result of the fraction of a percent increase in emissions). But they will probably care very much if they notice their car’s mileage is now say 3 MPG less than it was prior to having been “fixed.”

Diesel owners are probably the sort next-most-interested in the fuel efficiency of their vehicle after hybrid owners. It’s, you know, the main reason for buying a diesel-powered car.

How pissed off are they going to be?

And will a $500 (according to reports) “credit card” make up for it?Trees are reflected in the paint of a diesel Volkswagen Passat TDI SEL in Santa Monica

The fact that VW is offering (reportedly) money is hugely revealing. It indicates the company knows full well the “fix” is going to cost VW owners. But bet your bippie the money VW is putting on the table will be less than the money VW owners are fixin’ to lose as a result of the “fix.”

The hope, probably, is that they will not sue. Which they may.

Which I would.

Not over the “cheating.” Screw Uncle. VW was only trying to help … the customer, for once. The emissions rigmarole is literally insane. It is not about “dirty” diesels. It is about making it impossible to sell the things here. The standards are that severe. To achieve compliance, the manufacturers end up with diesels that don’t get particularly spectacular mileage and which also cost a bundle of money. This is the reason why – VW excepted – the only diesel-powered cars you can buy in this country are expensive diesels. Almost all of them sold under the aegis of a luxury brand such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

The sole exception is the Chevy Cruse diesel – and even it approaches $26k (about $5k more than VW was asking for a Jetta TDI).

So VW adjusted the cars to perform better, so that they would be more appealing to buyers. This entailed end-running Uncle’s stand-on-your head-while-also-juggling-china-plates emissions test ukase.

Well, now the buyers are going to be cheated – or feel that way. And likely, they’ll sue. Or – best case – they will never buy another VW again.

Meanwhile, there is the EPA.VW lwsuit pic

They are zeroing in for the kill.

First, over the “cheating.” This alone could – and probably will – fatally cripple the company. The fines being discussed ($18 billion, last I heard) are insurmountable, especially if sales are dead in the water. Which they are. VW itself has halted sales. You can’t buy a new TDI even if you didn’t care about any of the above. VW has withdrawn the certification application (EPA permission slip) and that’s the end of it, until the cars are certified.

But what if EPA goes after VW over the “fixed” cars not delivering on their mileage claims? This is as much a problem, potentially (because legally) as the emissions stuff. If, after, the half-million “affected” VWs are “fixed,” it becomes apparent that the mileage they deliver is less-than-advertised, the company will face the wrath of EPA and its customers.

And the truly grotesque thing is that if the mileage drops as expected, the cars at issue will also emit more of the “harmful emissions” being nattered about. Perhaps not while being hooked up to the EPA’s testing machines. But out on the road. Because if they burn more fuel, they will emit more exhaust gas. It is unavoidable, a function of “in and out.” Put the fuel in, burn it, you get a certain volume of gas. Chemistry.Bismarck sinking pic

Well, the greater the volume, the greater the total output and unless the exhaust is absolutely, 100 percent “clean” as unicorn farts – and it can never be when we are talking about internal combustion – whatever the remainder, even if it’s only 2-3 percent, which is what we’re talking about here – there will be more of it.

So, to recap:

VW is currently in the position of the battleship Bismarck on the 27th of May, 1941. Cornered and floundering, the guns of multiple adversaries raining shells down on her.

It is not going to end well.

For VW – or VW owners.

I’m not up to date on current high tech vehicle technology so let me ask:

Is there any way to get the thing “fixed” to satisfy those demanding it but leave it easily able to revert to its previous state of higher efficiency outside of the mandatory testing operations?

Soon cars will be 4GL enabled and the manufacturer will download software updates. Whether or not you want them.

So, what the fuck do you expect VW to do?

Yeah, that’s right, I’m defending VW. Not because they’re German and I like the cars (though that is a perfectly valid reason to defend them), but because they are being portrayed as the Bad Guy in all this. And they’re not.

They’re good vehicles. They’re European, built by Europeans. To me, that means they’re automatically hated by our current Regime. Hence, the insane EPA mandates.

EPA comes up with some new bullshit “mandate” in order for VW to sell their diesel burners over here. This despite the fact that German emissions standards are actually higher than those in the US. Doesn’t fucking matter – Thou Shalt Meet These Standards And Configure Thy Car In The Way We Sayeth, Or Thou Shalt Not Sell Thine Automobiles Here.

So VW configures their diesels to the way the US Gubmint says…. and realizes configuring their engines that way AND meeting the emissions and MPG standards is literally impossible.

CUZ FUKKIN FIZIKS YEW STOOPIT GUBMINT FUKS!

Doesn’t matter how impossible it is. Doesn’t matter that it’s fucking stupid. The Gubmint Hath Said So.

So VW hits on a creative solution – have the on board computer run the engine to pass EPA standards, then revert to the “better gas mileage/more horsepower” mode when it’s done.

As far as I know, the EPA said it has to pass emissions/MPG standards to be sold here… nothing said about staying that way once it passed the testing.

VW beat them at their own convoluted, insane game. And you don’t embarrass government employees. Not publicly anyways. Or beat them at their own game. Especially publicly.

So now VW has to be made to suffer. They must be brought to heel. Not only that, they must be publicly humiliated for beating the EPA – and everyone must see the punishment be administered.

So now, VW dishes out Free Shit to customers in an effort to salvage this mess. Give out vouchers, reprogram the cars, say you’re sorry and we MIGHT let you sell cars in this country again…

And this Eric Peters douche is bashing VW. Yeah, he pays lip service to the EPA, but what the fuck does he expect VW to do at this point? They complied with the EPA’s insane “mandates”, sold cars, made folks happy… now they’re being made out to be the Bad Guy by the assholes, I mean “Media” and the EPA. Far as I’m concerned, this Peters grundle is just dogpiling and gloating about it…

Yeah, well fuck him too…

@Anonymous, that’s what got VW into trouble in the first place..

The problem with fixing the vw tdi are 3 fold. The ones that have the urea nox traps will only require reprogramming. This represents only 15% of the vehicles that are in violation. The vehicles that will require traps and 3 way converters are problematic. The estimate to repair these vehicles far outstrips and profit made on the sale of all vw products for the last 5 years. Entire exhaust systems will need to be manufactured to fit these vehicles.
The third set is the worst. About 10 % of the vehicles used variable valve timing overlap and huge converters to reduce hc and nox and these vehicles do not have the capability of being repaired to the nox standards. The cylinder heads are not equipt with exhaust gas recirculation ports and there is no way to reduce combustion temps to the point where they will not flunk nox.

10% of the vw recalls will be by backs. 46,000 cars with prices from 34 to 51k. They will try to weasle a rental fee from the owners i am sure but face it very few car makers could afford a 12 billion buyback.

VW will pay some token fine to the EPA. End of story.

Over the last 15 years, I’ve owned 4 VW Passats and an Audi A4 and I don’t give a crap about the arbitrary government regulations that VW supposedly violated. 3 of my Passats were involved in head on collisions and my spouse walked away uninjured each time, while the Passats were not repairable and written off. I like VW because they’re a good car to be in when some jack ass turns left in front of you and hits you head on.

I believe the US government is targeting VW because they don’t donate enough money to the politicians.

VW makes some of the best quality, fuel efficient (less fuel taxes collected) vehicles out there. Our gov’t plunderers don’t collect much fuel tax from 50 mpg cars, those same sellouts to industrial food giants don’t like to see organic food successes like Chipotle, raw milk etc. and do anything they can to slander Russia (athletic doping).

Only a stupid, sheeple coincidence theorist would believe that crap, like they believe shooting hoaxes and the medical mafia.

I had an old rabbit diesel. 1980 if’n I remember correctly. It got 70 miles to the gallon. More if you didnt drive like a dick, which I do. If it wasnt for the stupid emissions rules, I betvthat new diesel would be pushing 100 mpg.

German cars are junk. The service departments at their car dealers are a hell hole of unhappy owners.
The emissions thing? The cars well most likely run like crap when “fixed” I never understood why for years you could get a German diesel car,But not anything American or Japanese.
Once again i think cars well soon be the least of your worries.

VW may have been forced into the prepaid credit cards.

IMO, Eric Peters is not bashing VW, he is bashing the EPA.

Yeah, Peters, it’s the EPA’s fault VW can’t build a car that will pass our standards so it’s okey-dokey for them to cheat. I hope the fine takes them out. They lied to the gov AND consumers, so why should we trust them in the future?

Yahsure says, “German cars are junk.” Really? I own a VW. She runs tip top. Are you a hasbara troll? Are you a Jew? Will you engage in debate with me? I suspect you won’t, and will slink back into your virtual hole. just shut the fuck up. You have been an apologist for Jews for quite some time. You have never responded to my queries or challenges.

Billy is right.

Blow me.

I get 47 miles to the gallon in my Jetta TDI now. I can attest that the fuel economy and horsepower are excellent as I drive 100 miles a day. I still have another 6,000 miles to go before my next service. I don’t want a token gift card to get my car “fixed” — I bought the car specifically because I wouldn’t have to fill up twice a week. The EPA and their emissions mandates are ridiculous.
