Reminds me of the movie “The Walk”.

I get nervous when I’m on a 2nd story roof or high up on extension ladder. How could those guys do it?

How many iron workers does it take to paint a tower?

(That’s a Joke.)

No way I could ever have done that.

Look no safety harnesses or nets. The fatality rate in construction back then was significantly higher, but those were the jobs available. Funny I do not see many (hardly any) women in construction even today. Not all men are pussies this day and age. Today I am at the old Weymouth Air force base walking one of our projects, it is about 15 degrees out and the wind has to be around a steady 25 MPH with gusts up to about 40 or 50. The framing contractor says to me its not all that bad once you get used to it. The roofer starts tomorrow I’m sure he will be happy.
Bob.

if by’damn good living’ you meant a roof over one’s head, food, clothes, hot water & decent plumbing, AND heat during winter, than I would agree with you!

My Dad was a pipefitter and had to climb into vessels for maintenance at the synthetic rubber and rocket fuel plant where he worked. While he was the brave one with brass balls who would do it (others wouldn’t) he was always concerned about lack of safety at the plant. Especially after a 500 gallon tank containing some very nasty shit blew up. He once said an explosion in just the right spot would take out the West end of Louisville and change the course of the Ohio river. Dow, Union Carbide, Rohm & Haas, and ASRC were among the plants at the time.

I always think of the Mohawk high rise iron workers when I see a picture like this. What a legacy they’ve made for themselves.

Teams of Indians were very often used for high construction.they were specialists in that and demolition. In demolition used to carry blasting caps in their teeth so that in an accident they didn’t suffer their guts blown out, etc.

These men- and I have never seen a woman do this type of work and doubt I ever will- are still paid very well, depending on the height at which they can work, and they damn well deserve their high wages.

I was told by one of these guys that there are three levels of pay: the lowest pay tier goes to those who work at heights up to 300′, the 2nd tier to those who work above 300′ but below 1000′, and the elite tier are those rarified creatures who can work at over 1000′, where I also hear that Native Americans predominate. I specify “Native American” because I never heard of a native of India doing this type of work.

Nothing but admiration for those me from a guy who likes nothing higher than a 10 ft step ladder. @ West I can’t speak to pipe fitters courage but their work is physically brutal. Very few can make it to retirement because their bodies wear out.

What feminism calls patriarchy is simply civilization, an abstract system designed by men but augmented and now co-owned by women.
One of feminism’s irritating reflexes is its fashionable disdain for “patriarchal society,” to which nothing good is ever attributed.
Camille Paglia

Satisfaction for the creature of chaos is only attained in the the destruction of order.
