OK, Now What?: The Party is Over, Cometh the Hangover

All right, we have him. My reaction to Trump’s victory is barely of interest to me, and so it may be that the world is not waiting in quiet desperation for an account. I have no information on this matter from Ulan Bator or Sulawesi. Insofar as my reaction was that of half of the country, it may be of note.

My reaction was, “Yes! Yes!  Yessss!”

This of course is because like all of Trump’s supporters I am sick of corruption, oligarchs, New York, candidate’s who sell state favors surrounded by serial rapists and goofy-looking pedophiles, and the goddamned bought-and-paid-for media.

And then I wondered how much I should be  delighted. I am not a particularly enthusiastic Trump fan. The man seems radically incoherent, almost nutty. What now? Of the things Trump has promised, which, if any, make sense? Which are unthought-out huff and puff? From what will he back away? Will he transmute himself by degrees into Hillary?

For example, his Wall. As a metaphorical expression of opposition to immigration, it serves well. As a practical project? No. What are the specifics? A Wall made of what? How high, how deep under ground, requiring how much of what materials? Do the arithmetic on yards of concrete and feet of rebar and then pour yourself a stiff drink. Flimsy is cuttable, tall requires only a taller ladder.

Electronic monitoring sounds good, but would require either use of the military as a domestic police force to patrol the Wall–hello, Guatemala–or a huge new federal bureaucracy  working three shifts, often housed in barracks in uninhabited country. Helicopters, sensors, big contracts for the same.

Things that would actually work to discourage illegals, such as heavy prosecution of people hiring illegals, this by using federal laws already on the books and a Justice Department he will control, do not feature greatly in his talk. Uh…why not?

He wants to put a thirty percent (or whatever: he isn’t consistent) tariff on goods made by American companies in China and brought back for sale in the US. So an iPad goes from $1000 to $1300, whereupon Samsung corners the market. So he puts an equal tariff on Samsung’s tablets. The effect is of a heavy tax on the American consumer.

The underlying problem is that if labor is a dollar an hour in Bangladesh, and $40 an hour in America after including benefits, bringing jobs back to America is going to make things much more expensive for Americans. Breaking unions, which are irrelevant today anyway, or charges of currency manipulation will not make enough of a difference to make a difference.

Trump has said that he will rid the country of illegals, of whom there are between ten and fifteen million, in eighteen months to two years. Anyone want to make bets on this? He seems to have backed off, as he seems to back from many things that got him elected.

He wants to end welfare for illegals. This would have the desired effect on unemployed illegals, but a lot of welfare comes from states, no? Does he have the authority?

He has talked of removing citizenship from children of illegals. If he does this by executive order, he will establish a new Presidential power to revoke citizenship of anyone he pleases. Otherwise the question will assuredly go to a hostile Supreme Court. Can he make a state stop offering schooling to children of his choice?

And of course ending benefits for children of illegals will result in night after night of television of poor little Rosita Gomez, aged eight, being dragged in tears and perhaps handcuffs from second grade  by brutal federal marshals when all she wants to to learn English and be a good American, etc. Will California buy into this? Will the country?

He has talked of getting American troops out of Japan and South Korea on grounds that those countries can pay for their own defense if they want it. Good idea. However, it would mean the end of the American Empire in Asia. This would fly like space ships with the public–who really gives a damn about the Empire?–but would face squalling, roaring opposition from NATO, the Neocons, the arms industry, imperialists. and the international welfare clients–countries benefiting from free American stuff.

Bucking these would take great, clanking brass balls and a really good ballistic vest. Does he have them? Already he seems to be backing off removal of troops from South Korea.

He talks of getting out of, or disbanding, NATO. Great idea. NATO’s  real purpose is to keep Europe under Washington’s control and to supply sepoys to provide a thin coating of legitimacy to imperial wars in places like Afghanistan–not excessively a North Atlantic country, but never mind. The idea that Europe, with over twice Russia’s 145 million people, and a much greater economy, needs America to defend it against an uninterested Russia–nuff said. But hey, exuberate the rubes, scare’m, tell them you will protect them, send money. Works every time. Can Trump stand up to this?

I hope so. I bet not.

He was going to ban Muslims. This seems to have disappeared from his web site. Again, backing off.

In short, I think he can’t do or won’t do most of the things he said he would do. The question here is not whether he should do them–I think several are splendid ideas–but whether he can or will.

End “sanctuary cities”? How? By cutting off federal funding, he has suggested. Will he use an executive order–that is, do it by  fiat? If he can cut off funding to one city for one reason, he can cut off funding to any city for any reason. (Another interesting new power.) Didn’t Congress use to have something to do with funding?

In his policies on immigration, he faces three grave problems. First, Mexicans at least are not behaving badly enough. While most people would happily keep more from coming in there is no groundswell for kicking them out–furious internet commentators notwithstanding. Second, the President doesn’t have the legal authority to dictate local policies. Can he tell Los Angeles not to treat Latinos in hospitals? To stop  issuing driver’s licenses? Third, in places with large Latino populations he will run into passive resistance. A city that doesn’t want to find illegals won’t.

My predictions, subject to ingestion of crow: No ethnic cleansing of illegals. No wall. No tight ban on Muslims. No punishment of sanctuary cities. No termination of welfare by states. No major decrease in military deployments. No war with Russia. Few or no jobs repatriated.

An essay critical of a man who has not had a chance to perform written by an expat with no skin in the game. I see little difference in Reed’s writing from that of a HuffPo communist.

I beg to differ. I think he is basically spot on. But its good and heres why. When the sjw libtards see no change, they might finally realize how blown up the system really is, and maybe the next guy might be a real true unifier of a decent candidate for the job. Or we get michael obamma and my head fucking explodes.

Well folks, I guess it’s over. A fun couple of days while it lasted.
The Donald won, but the web’s best and brightest have spoken: Trump will fail.
It’s just too hard; let’s just give up before even trying.

Hey Fred, were you even watching this election? Trump won against overwhelming odds; defeated both the Republican and Democrat machines, the media, the globalist oligarchs, you name it.

Pussy.

Fred’s probably right. Talk is cheap during a campaign. But if Trump avoids a war with Russia and doesn’t implement the policies that Hillary would have, that is good enough for me.

Maybe we should adopt Joe Madden’s Cubs slogan and use it for Trump:
“Just don’t suck.”

I love Fred but he is jumping the gun. Trump has every intention of carrying out his promises but he will do it slowly, quietly and with a minimum of disruption. Take the Muslims, please.

Do you expect hm to rush out onto Fifth Avenue and punch the first thing he sees in a hijab? Maybe burn down a mosque?

No, he will issue orders to the State Department to crack down on visa issuance in Muslim countries, immediately. He will deport those illegally in the country, quietly, one by one. He will issue executive orders banning Muslim “clerics” supported by foreign money from being issued clerical visas (yes, they exist).

Trump is not a fool. He is not going to give the enemy easy targets. Why should he?

His call with General Al-Sisi is the real truth teller. The good genetral hates the radical Muslims and Trump made it clear he shares those views. Trump will have guys like him do most of the heavy lifting. Smart, no?

Hell, it is just two days after the election! Let him take office! He isn´t Christ or the Wizard of Oz!

Maybe 5 years ago, Malaysia grew sick of all the Indonesians illegals who arrived in the years before. Malaysia had a delicate ethnic balance between indigenous Malays, Chinese and Indians and the Indonesian influx was upsetting this.

Malaysia ordered illegals to self deport within 72 hours or be deported by police- after they were flogged! The NYTs and the rest of media never followed up on Malaysia experiment in ‘self deportation’ so I assume it worked otherwise it would be cited by the Fred Reed’s of this world as a example of the futility of expelling foreign nationals.

I know Reed doesn’t care about the US so why does he write for an American audience. Make your living in Mexico you ersatz greaseball and send those Social Security checks you’ve been getting back. You should be able to do without them in your adopted land.

I’m sure the first deportation targets will be 2nd grade girls, during class hours, as Fred suggests. I bet he keeps the cantina crowd enraptured with his precise insights. His mind every bit as vibrant as the worm in the tequila.

Fred should have qualified his predictions by saying, “if things stay the same”. Fortunately, things aren’t going to stay the same, whether the politicians want it, or not. Extraodinary times call for extraodinary measures.

Glad to have read the article and also glad to see the responses. It is very refreshing to me to see alternate views of what lies ahead to have a well rounded opinion of how to move forward. I am a reluctant pro Trump supporter and a definite anti Hillary (can’t think of the word, you know what I mean), as such I am celebrating November 8th as a great moment in history. But the road that lies ahead will be filled with market gyrations as well as major fights as we see how much infighting there will be among Republicans, as we see their true colors emerge now that they have their dream of control of the gov’t in hand (will they thank Trump?), not to mention the rabid minority (who will probably still have the MSM in their back pockets). Yes, the author does write with the flavor of a Huff Po hit piece, but we who read have the intelligence to discern the real questions from the premature ramblings; which is a far better realm to be in, as opposed to the one story line army of journalists that fill the ranks of the liberal media.

Judging from the early indications from the Trump camp regarding Trump’s likely cabinet and advisor appointments, it’s going to be out with the old and in with the old. Currently it appears as if the new Attorney General will be Rudy Guiliani, who is a blatant Establishment hack; Larry Kudlow as an advisor, who is the worst economist in the modern era; and Jamie Dimon, CEO, JP Morgan/Chase – who should be in jail – and Goldman Sachs alumnus Steven Mnuchin as Treasury Secretary. More of the same. Neocon elitists, Establishment apologists and Wall Street thieves.

I wouldn’t get too excited about current rumors about his cabinet. 50/50 chances at best when it is mostly conjecture.

I wish he would make Trey Goudy Attorney General.

My biggest fear for him is the Deep State. How will he possibly be able to know who to trust? They can infiltrate his administration and can ruin him or kill him as needed.

He will have to scale back some of his platform. This should be of no surprise, even to smart Fred. If he would just get the wall built, sanctuary cities defunded, and the alien felons out of here, we would be much more amenable to letting those who are already here stay. No 2nd grade girls dragged out of class, I promise.

Zerohedge has an article about the specific things he plans to work on immediately as listed on his website. Reading it was like opening presents on Christmas morning. If he accomplishes half of it in four years, I will stand amazed.

Sorry Gayle. That was meant to be a thumbs up. Mistakes are more frequent as one gets older. Like you, the ZH piece made my day. I’d like to see Goudy as AG as well. He’s not shy about taking names and kicking ass. Interesting side note, he appeared in an old “Forensic Files” (2005 I think) as the prosecuting DA. Local boy makes good in big city.

Fuck all ya’ll………..I still like my automated, infrared, robotic Gatling guns with interlocking fields of fire, live-streamed 24/7 to Pay-Per-View in place of a wall.

There’s 20-30 million of these illegal beaners here and in the last few years they’ve been bringing in Ecuadorans, Guatamalens and who knows who else by the trainload. Since I have to work an hour or more everyday to pay for these ILLEGAL motherfuckers I should be allowed to derive a little entertainment out of it! If they successfully run the gauntlet, we tattoo proof of citizenship to their forehead on the spot so that no one discriminates against them for being illegal. (and add an extra gun where he made it through) If they fail……..well….worms and buzzards gotta eat too!

I vote that we give the contract for maintaining my “wall” to Billy since him likes workin’ on guns and doesn’t much care for beaners, legal or otherwise. Besides, he’s a veteran!

I think Fred is making an important point. I like Trump, but let’s face the facts. For him to do half of what he claimed he would do is like Hercules’ Augean Stables; it’s an impossible task with a brief 4 year time window. Short of acting like a dictator, there’s not much chance he’ll get his stuff through Congress in 40 years, let alone 4. And he has walked back or retreated many of his original statements and even his most diehard fan has to admit he can change positions at the drop of a hat. The Dilbert guy says it’s merely his style of leadership, while I fear it might be he blew a lot of smoke and now he has to figure out how much he can actually accomplish. I’m afraid Trump is going to leave everyone upset. His detractors automatically hate him for everything he does, while his supporters will be mad when his efforts turn out to be half-measures. I wish him luck. I want him to succeed, but I don’t believe he can. Even the perfect candidate would find fixing America a hopeless task.

You contradict yourself Gilberts.

For him to have won against an opponent that outspent him 5:1 with the full support of the entire media/banking/corporate/union/globalist power structure up against him, with no support from his own party and zero political experience was a Herculean effort, which he won.

Let that sink in before you begin writing the epitaph.

He now has a unified House and Senate and can begin stacking the Supreme Court as those old farts die off with true Constitutional judges. Should any of them stand in his way he has the microphone and can focus all the passion he was able to generate from his base, and now the huge number of people dependent upon continued government largesse added to that right back at them.

I expect that Donald Sun Tzu has a bit more in his playbook than you imagine.

BTW, can you point out all of your successful prognostications regarding the outcome of the election prior to November 8th because I can’t seem to find any.

Fred is a perfect example of what happens to a man who allows himself to be corrupted by degeneracy.

You may be intelligent, you may be insightful, you may have a sterling reputation for telling the truth and being fearless in the face of adversity, but once you allow you principles to be sidelined by your hunger for immoral behaviors the rest of your life is an endless series of excuses and projections.

I think seeing someone of his caliber fall is far more of a loss than a thousand people who never had the opportunity to rise to their own potential.
