I have always loved Cohen’s music and style since walking down a street in Dallas in the Christmas season with my then teen-aged son feeling a little high on life when a street singer started singing Cohen’s Hallelujah in a way I’d never heard it sung… that woeful soulful sound that Jeff Buckley achieved long before KD Lang made it familiar to the masses. He and I were mesmerized, having similar tastes in music (though he will NEVER admit it).
“twas a common liking for the master’s dark haunting work (check out the “darkness drinking from [my] cup)” lines in Darkness or any other of his beautiful but slightly twisted lyric masterpieces) that convinced me that EC was really more than just another annoying troll. I still haven’t made a final decision about bb… I keep my troll picture handy.
As for Cohen, he leaves behind an amazing body of work that helps people love, live and grieve. That’s a life pretty well lived.

Ya’ll do know that Cohen was …… a Joo !! But, I suppose he gets much love here cuz he was just a regyoulah Joo.
Cohen’s music and poetry are laced with biblical references. Regarding politics, Cohen tended to avoid it in his songs … but, not totally.
His song “Story of Isaac” is commonly viewed as a criticism of the Vietnam War, admonishing fathers for sacrificing their sons to the war just as Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son:
— “You who build these altars now/ To sacrifice these children,/ You must not do it anymore./ A scheme is not a vision.”
His most overtly political song, “Democracy” is a tribute to the messy, ugly, and beautiful process that is modern democracy.
— “I’m sentimental, if you know what I mean/ I love the country but I can’t stand the scene./ And I’m neither left or right/ I’m just staying home tonight,/ getting lost in that hopeless little screen.”
A great songwriter with an awesome voice. He will be missed.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
