TBP IS STILL FREE

It was exactly two years ago when my wife and I had the opportunity to meet David Stockman and his wife in NYC. I documented the experience in my article UNEASY IN NYC. After writing articles for the last eight years, I forget about them as I move on to the next subject matter. After re-reading it this morning, I was pretty impressed by my writing and my sense of humor. I found myself laughing at my own stuff.

David had just started his own website and had asked me to be a regular contributor. Over the last two years he has posted dozens of my articles on his site. At the time, my visitor counts were slightly higher than his. But, he is a world renowned financial mind, so it was just a matter of time until his site went soaring far above TBP. He basically wrote one major article per day, while posting the work of 20 or 30 other bright financial minds per day.

I love his articles and the articles of his like minded contributors. I would go there every day to find stuff to re-post on TBP. David and his wife asked about the business aspects of my site. I told them I made virtually nothing from the site. I didn’t require registration and emails to make comments. I had a full-time job and was running the site as a way for my voice to be heard. I could tell they were looking at his site as a potential money making venture.

I respect that. David makes his living through his writing. His book, The Great Deformation, is fantastic and should be read by everyone. I have interacted with and observed enough people, like Doug Casey, John Mauldin, Bill Bonner, Chris Martenson, Charles Hugh Smith, and many others, to understand how you can make a living from writing on the internet. You build an audience with good writing. You gather thousands of email addresses. You then use the email addresses to market your books, newsletters, or access to the really good information.

About a month ago, David partnered with Agora (Bill Bonner’s original company) and decided to make his website pay to access. He brilliantly used his new book Trumped! A Nation on the Brink of Ruin as the lure to sign up for access to the site. You got the book for free if you signed up for one year. It now will cost you $39 per month to read David’s articles and access his contributors. That’s $468 per year.

I’m a numbers guy and can appreciate the large potential earnings from such a move. TBP now averages 25,000 visitors per day. My guess is David was averaging 75,000 visitors per day. If he convinced 2% of those visitors to sign up, that’s $700,000 per year. Not too shabby. But now he reaches only 1,500 people per day.

I’m no David Stockman, but suppose I decided to do the same thing and charged $20 per month. If I convinced 2% of my daily visitors to sign up, that would be $120,000. Also, not too shabby when you have two kids in college and an underwater condo in Wildwood. But that would completely ruin TBP. My entire purpose for running the site would be over.

At this point, I will always keep TBP free, unless I get fired and am forced to make a living from TBP. I also used to write regular articles for the Casey Report. They would pay me $500 for 1,500 word article. I had to stop because running this site takes up too much of my time. David Galland has asked me to write for his new newsletter. I can’t.

Here’s where my frustration comes in. I think my site actually offers more than Stockman’s. TBP has a plethora of contributors who have found their voice over the last 7 years. Many of their articles have been picked up by Zero Hedge and gained a much wider audience. Except for a few trolls, the commentary on TBP is far superior to Zero Hedge’s or Stockman’s. I never beg for donations. I have attempted to generate some revenue through ads, but then I tell the regulars to download Ghostery so they don’t have to see the ads. Sort of shooting myself in the foot.

TBP visitors in October were up 30% over last October and up 85% over October 2014. TBP is on track to have over 7 million visitors in 2016. But, somehow my donations are lower than they were two years ago. I must really be attracting cheapskates. I bear all the operating costs for the site. I’m a one man show, with The Man With No Name behind the scenes keeping the site running fast and staying safe.

I feel obligated to keeping the site interesting 24/7/365. I get up at 5:00 am so I can post 5 or 6 things before I leave for work. My daily round trip commute is 2 to 3 hours. I’m working for over 9 hours in the office. When I get home after 6 pm every night I’m exhausted. If you calculated the amount of money I bring in from TBP per hour spent on the site, it probably comes to $3 per hour. I check the TBP PO box once per week. It is a little depressing when there is nothing in the box for 5 consecutive weeks. The paypal donations are a trickle.

I have 10 dedicated TBP members who automatically contribute to the site every month. They know who they are. I also have several other strong TBP supporters who provide significant contributions to TBP. That donation total comes from a very small club. To quote Crooked Hillary, at this point, what difference does it make.

If you think you get some value from TBP and have the financial means to do so, please make a donation. If not, I understand. If you are buying anything through Amazon, do so through my Amazon link. They pay me 6% of every purchase.

KEEP TBP FREE!!!!

Charles Hugh Smith offers his website for a ‘voluntary’ donation of $1/month. That to me is a more sensible way to do it since you still reach a mass audience. Stockman is going to be very disappointed in how many people are willing to pay $40/month to read his rants.

There is a girl on YouTube who does ASMR relaxation videos.
She was broke and started doing them as a form of personal therapy 5 years ago. She caught on and now she is wildly successful with 750,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel. Of course, there was another girl who tried the same thing, was equally talented at it and decided to jump off the balcony of her apartment in Calgary. Paralyzed now. There isn’t a lot of room at the top.

I will send some more. I got my bonus yesterday for year. I paid about 1700 dollars in taxes to a bunch of thieves in Halifax and Ottawa. I don’t get a thanks in return from them. What is few more fiat among friends. At least with this place I can become more informed while being entertained.

This place has over time changed the way I see the world. It may be subtle to a bystander but it has been profound to me. I have said many times that your words matter and resonate. It is why other sites ask you to write.

Thanked you in past and I thank you again!

So come on you cheap bastards. Reach in your pockets and send the man some money!

Admin,

Ugh, I can’t believe I am writing this but you need some tough love. You have your shit ass backwards. You can either be the Web Administrator or you can be the content creator. You can’t be both.

Your value to this website isn’t posting the articles. It’s creating the content. If you switch your mindset the dynamics will change in a short time span. Shift your focus to creating content, contributing to websites that want to pay you, and hire someone to be the administrator. It’s internet grunt work and you can easily find someone to take over. Write a list of what you do everyday and create a job. That will free up your time to create content.

Administrator, I am negotiating with Clamantha about betrothal to my young son. And, yes, I know about her student loans.

There will be a Bunny Farms special gift from me soon, sealed in Mylar after being vacuum-sealed in a food-saver bag with Oxygen absorbers to prevent aroma in the event of puncture during transit, which might help relieve the stress of running TBP.

How is THAT for a bunnyspeak message for the do-gooder-wanna-be agents out there in Utah to try and decipher, Unreadable?

Ah, Stephanie, as my son approaches that six-figure salary in the burbs of some techno-crazed city, you are really attractive to this mother-in-law-to-be who does not want some skank-ass bitch like poor Billah (whomever and whatever person that Dopple Name is supposed to invoke) has to endure.

I am happy for you regarding the credit report and hopeful it just “goes away.”

Edit: Admin, I meant to edit this earlier but got knee-deep in Chubby Bunny Granola Nuggets (–not to be confused with Chubby Bunny Turf-Building Pellets, which I also will be knee-deep in later today.) I like the new “edit” feature, but need an alarm on my computer to let me know my hour is almost over.

Maggie, you are missing the whole point of BW’s comments. They are not meant to garner sympathy for Mr Billah. I guess the person in question, Billah, provoked somebody here who chose to use humor as a weapon. I wouldn’t call it rapier wit because it’s more like a bludgeon applied to the head. The writer behind the BW persona is very well educated so that leaves me and bb out of the lineup. The writer is wickedly funny so that leaves a whole bunch of folks out of the lineup.

If they ever had a TBP reunion in Vegas, I’d sign up in a heartbeat if BW promised to come out of the writer’s closet. But then, that would kill it just like they killed Moonlighting with a kiss.

When I was in the USAF, I worked with a dude from inner Philly who joined the military and escaped the ghetto. He had completed a master’s degree, was incredibly well spoken and drove a Volvo. The officers with whom we worked (with or for?) could ONLY talk to him if he talked the Philly street talk with them.

It was flat out bullshit. He was more educated than they, but it made them comfortable to believe differently.

Thumb your nose at me but that was actually a compliment. I said nothing about changing your job or real income. I was solely commenting about shifting your focus on TBP and creating content.

In freelancing doing admin work doesn’t pay shit. It’s advertised as being a virtual assistant job. The people who make money are the ones creating content or selling the content. You don’t sell your writing, you sell your ideas. Nobody gives a shit if the writing is good if the ideas are uninspiring. You have great ideas. The recent fourth turning articles and the anti-cinderella man article were pretty damn good.

I didn’t find TBP through the articles you post as the admin on TBP, but I do appreciate the variety. I found this website because you were contributing on another website. You don’t know your strengths and I’m trying to point them out to you. Your best contribution is writing articles and breaking down the numbers of the jobs/quarterly profit reports.

November 5, 2016 12:45 pm

It’s not presumption at all. Those are the two areas on this website that he can’t hire someone else to do for him. Nobody can write how he writes or come up with his ideas. Nobody can break down the reports like he does. Even Stockman stole the spreadsheet he spent hours making and republished it.

He does have a good eye for what to republish on this site, but he can give that to a virtual assistant to do. All he has to do is send them the links he wants posted and let them do the grunt work of copy, paste, and reposting. It frees up the time he spends in the morning posting articles so he can redirect it to writing or something else.

To wit, I bet you dollars to donuts that Stockman has someone doing the grunt work of his site so it can free up his time to write an article everyday and write a book. And if you’ve read Stockman’s articles…they’re long.

And I defaulted on those loans because my interest rate jumped from 3.4% to 6.8% by an act of Congress and was set to rise every year on July 1st. I’m not going to forfeit my income for the rest of my life because of usury on top of the money the government is already taking from me through taxes and inflation.

Thanks for the reminder Jim. I read Tbp every single day, and would not be able to afford $40/month (or even $20.) A payment has been sent. Keep up the good work!

Just a thought: some of us that read you every day might have products or services that would be of interest to your readers. By helping your audience, you might be able to gain more revenue via ads, and more donations through good will. I’m just brainstorming here, but I imagine all those ads really don’t generate that much income. Supporting like minded readers is a “win-win” in my opinion. Although previous ads may not have worked well, if you could “recommend,” or at least mention that the ads are from supporters, it may help.

I do especially agree that the commentors here are of “higher quality” than Zh etc. I rarely comment anywhere (and sometimes it’s a tough crowd here,) but at least here it’s mostly civil & entertaining vs crude and cruel as in some other places.

Have a great weekend, and thanks again for your selfless dedication to spreading the truth 🙂

Stockman’s pee is still trickling down the nation’s leg:

“Stockman was one of the most controversial OMB directors ever appointed, also known as the “Father of Reaganomics.” He resigned in August 1985. Committed to the doctrine of supply-side economics, he assisted in the passing of the “Reagan Budget” (the Gramm-Latta Budget), which Stockman hoped would curtail the “welfare state”. He thus gained a reputation as a tough negotiator with House Speaker Tip O’Neill’s Democratic-controlled House of Representatives and Majority Leader Howard Baker’s Republican-controlled Senate. During this period, Stockman became well known to the public during the contentious political wrangling concerning the role of the federal government in American society.

“Stockman’s influence within the Reagan Administration was negatively affected after the Atlantic Monthly magazine published the infamous 18,246 word article, “The Education of David Stockman”,[7] in its December 1981 issue, based on lengthy interviews Stockman gave to reporter William Greider.

“Stockman was quoted as referring to Reagan’s tax act in these terms: “I mean, Kemp-Roth [Reagan’s 1981 tax cut] was always a Trojan horse to bring down the top rate…. It’s kind of hard to sell ‘trickle down.’ So the supply-side formula was the only way to get a tax policy that was really ‘trickle down.’ Supply-side is ‘trickle-down’ theory.”[7] Of the budget process during his first year on the job, Stockman was quoted as saying, “None of us really understands what’s going on with all these numbers,” which was used as the subtitle of the article.[7]”

I used to read stockmans doom porn, but once he changed to a pay to play format, he lost another reader.

If someone wants to charge money for an, editorial of his/her interpretation of reality, then that is an indication of how poorly they planned their future, or perhaps how greedy they truly are.

David Stockman has not said anything new, or original, in the last 5 years, it is just the same old song “the sky is falling, get your money out of the market, ’cause it’s rigged”

everything is rigged, from your fake education and degrees, to the smile you get from the Dr. before he plumbs the depths of your innards.

just relax, don’t fight it, this will only take a minute.

Admin,

Please hang in here, your commute depresses me, as my wife’s commute is only 1.5 miles each way. I pay Stockman fee of 29. month, but it doesn’t seem to be that much better than before, but I will try it for a year. TBP is more interesting by far, as it is more varied, with lots of input. I will gladly throw in a extra 100. this January, as I appreciate your effort. I pay Ed Steer’s Gold Digest 100. a year, and has all kinds of input, even Stockman articles.

I found your site through Steve Quayle’s site and read some articles a few years back. I now check in on TBP almost daily and though I have commented only a few times ( I comment no where really) I always read them. I have never subscribed to a web site and probably would not to this one either, but your formula of donations and the talent of the writing is worthy of my thank you so I sent my token share through paypal. I hope you don’t have to pay taxes on it, if so be sure to let us know and next time I’ll send cash! – Tony

Business (consulting) has finally (last week of October) picked up, so I’ll be sending a hundred or more by the end of the year.
I’d rather give it to you than pay down debt – that’s where this site sits with me. Besides, I should be earning more for a while (at least through January?), and I think you deserve a reward for all you do here. Maybe I can funnel some Amazon Christmas presents through here too!

You’re a good salesman, Admin. I’ll pony up another money order for you this week.

And I use the Amazon link here when I order stuff I don’t need with money I don’t have.

Ah, who needs a Kobalt brand tool box? I bought a Harbor Freight tool box for $99. It arrived damaged severely, I will get a replacement after I schlep this one to the the Fedex place.

I’ll probably fill it with a Stanley tool set from Walmart ($49). I know about chrome vanadium, I lost a socket when my son used it on a wheel lug. But nowadays, I don’t do heavy duty work. Too old. The sexy mulatta asked me to replace the heel tip on a pair of shoes she’s had for almost 20 years. That’s the kind of jobs I handle nowadays.

Still, I need the tool box to get organized. I have too many different tools in cabinets and old dresser drawers in the garage. Somehow, that doesn’t make it look like a mancave. I’m going to re-do the thing.

I don’t want any warnings on HF tools, I know they are shit but the workbench and toolbox I bought are pretty cool.

I have been turning my nose up at Stanley and today I read they are quite popular with home tinkerers, and that Stanley owns other brands also. Chrome vanadium and carbon steel are middle level tools, the advantage of Kobalt and Craftsman are they have a lifetime replacement guarantee. I actually returned a Craftsman ratchet once. It broke like Stucky on a rainy day.

Anyway, the whole point is that I will be signing up for the $10/month version of TBP as long as it includes comments by bb and Stucky. I know the $20/mo version has HF articles but maybe I can get by if Unsubscribed slips me a contraband copy.

If it wasn’t for TBP, the election results would have taken me by surprise. I suspect the election of the Donald will resurrect my forecast for 2015 being the bottom of the recession.

Value for Value model works, It is the model of the best podcast in the universe, No Agenda. 100% funded by listener contributions. http://www.noagendashow.com/

I have a regular bill payment from my bank to both TBP and No Agenda because they provide something I value. How much does going to a movie cost these days for 2 people $30 to $50? TBP provides move value than another shitty movie, so why not send $15-$25 per month and skip the movie…
