Al Sharpton seems to be doing whatever he can to mislead minorities in a very dangerous way. He has been organizing civil rights activists vowing to defend what they say are hard-fought gains in voting rights and criminal justice prior to the presidency of Donald Trump. Sharpton is not stupid. He knows what he is doing. Why did he not do this against Obama who kept defending police? Why now?

It was the Clintons who signed in the Mandatory Miniumum sentences. Since the Clintons signed that act, the prison population has more than doubled. It use to be a prosecutor did not care if you went to prison as long as he won the conviction. Then it all changed. Prosecutors get no credit for their career UNLESS someone goes to prison.
I was running the legal library having to give advice to people in prison based upon the law. The unit manager came to me and gave me an old Chinese guy they just put in prison and said “Here – he’s yours!” A asked what do you mean? He said “You speak that stuff!” The prisoner did not speak English and was probably in his eighties. I responded: “I do not speak Mandarin. I know Japanese. “Oh its all the same. He’s yours!” It turned out he drove on federal property with an expired drivers license and was sentenced to 30 days in prison. There was another guy we had to laugh about. He was in prison for shooting a moose on federal property. It got to the point we would ask – What are you in for? Farting in a federal building?
Al Sharpton had more than 20 years to lead a protest about the injustice of the criminal system put in by the Clintons. Of course, they are Democrats. Can’t do that. OMG, people might find out the truth! Sharpton is brainwashing these people as if Trump is somehow going to make this worse? Where has he been for the past 25 years?
Trump is not a racist nor has he EVER said anything about rolling back civil rights since they really do not exist right now anyhow. This is all about stirring people to protest about things they do not even know what they are yelling about or are they yelling about the wrong people. This is just nuts.
It’s just dangerous.
If I had to take a wild guess at why the minimum sentencing laws went into effect when they did under the admin they did and looking at the numbers and knowing what percentage are Black prisoners I’d have to say that they were fully aware of the changing tide of public sentiment regarding progressive policies and race relations in America and it was meant as a means of forestalling the inevitable shift in public awareness. It looks deliberate.
A lot of people see the things that the government does and immediately blame it on incompetence or some other form of malfeasance that is accidental or unforeseen. When I see a dam built, or a prison or some other government project I assume that they meant to build a dam or a prison and that it was deliberate and on purpose. The same applies to the outcomes of policies. That graph was intentionally constructed.
Or maybe Hillary really was a racist who wanted blacks to serve prison time, whatever the crime.
Looking at the graph, there seems to be a relation between the civil rights movements taking hold and the prison population increase.
It may have to do with the mandatory minimums, but it also may not since they are a result of other developments.
Look at deinstitutionalization and homelessness. The two graphs are connected at the proverbial hip.
Human behavior doesn’t alter just because you change the law.
Deinstitutionalization was a Reagan initiative, he released the crazies to fend for themselves.
Actually, as Governor of California he simply complied with court orders to do so.
A result. among other things, of the ACLU and other “civil rights” activist groups making a progressive legal challenges and claiming the mentally ill had the right to be that way unless they were actually harming someone.
Pretty much ended locking someone up just because they were batshit crazy, and we see the results in the MSM on a regular basis to this day (where they try to blame it on something other than mental illness for the most part).
It does seem that more freedom makes for more bad choices and more in jail.

It seems to me that all of these race pimps and baiters love the fact that Trump got elected. Seriously, hear me out on this one. If Hillary would have got elected, there would be no “cause” these assholes could “fight against”. They would just be kind of stagnate, being the background noise in congress, and sometimes showing up on CNN to blabber about black violence, or racism ad nauseum. However, now they have an “enemy” and someone they can use as the demon to fight against – for camera time, drama, and opinions. Only of course if they collect enough money for the “cause” will they overcome….

The best thing us thinking people can do is when you encounter one of the rubes (although, when would we associate with these rubes) make it a point not to criticize their “cause” but let them know that they are being used by these “leaders” to extract their treasure just like the old woman watching the televangelist on Sunday morning being extracted from to continue “gods work”.

Libs & Libertarians ask “why are we incarcerating more people than ever when violent crime rates are at the lowest rate in decades?”. Ever think maybe the question answers itself? There’s a big danger of a prison industrial complex locking up people who don’t need locking up. It’s almost as big as the danger of having people who deserved to be locked up amongst us. No one should be unjustly convicted, and it’s important to remember that people are sent to prison AS punishment, not FOR punishment. That being said, if a repeat violent offender is now sentenced to a longer term for being a “prohibited person in possession of a firearm”, I have no problem with that. Most murderers prove to have had arrests for prior violent offenses. Denninger The Libertarian Purist thinks criminals’ right to bear arms shouldn’t be infringed – that we should just lock them up until they’re “no longer dangerous” – after which they should be able to carry. Maybe that makes sense, but if a guy’s choice is 25 years in the hoosegow for assault (until he’s “no longer dangerous”) versus 24 months and thereafter being prohibited from possessing a gun, getting the latter punishment shouldn’t be considered a violation of his rights. If someone has exhibited an inclination to violence, a repeat conviction should result in being removed from society for a lengthy period.
You neglect the proliferation of “crimes”; there are more now than ever. If you fill in a pond on your own property without EPA permission, you can go to jail. If you withdraw your own money from the bank in several transactions (as you should have every right to do), you can go to jail for “structuring” in an attempt to avoid being reported by your bank for taking out more than $10,000 in cash at one time (a pseudo-drug-money-laundering reporting requirement). If you drive across a piece of Fed land with a gun in your truck, you can run afoul of firearms laws you never heard of because you never intended to commit a crime.
Until GS and JPM execs are in jail for theft and fraud, we have no business enforcing any laws beyond murder, rape and ordinary criminal infractions. Until we are rid of the Federal Reserve, the odious national debt and the wasteful government departments and programs, the Congress should be convened in a prison and the members locked down at night until they free us from their chains.
Anyone who has been a victim knows why a minimum sentence is a wonderful thing. Who wants to see a rapist get three months of a murderer three years? This is what was happening and sometimes still does (when the authorities look at a crime and charge it at a much lesser level than it merits).
So what the author argues for is a let them loose standard for criminals and their magical thinking allies.
If your a law abidding citizen, arm yourself and make sure the author’s idea of justice never gets a chance to be heard.
