Zombies R Us: ‘We the People’ Are the Walking Dead of the American Police State

Guest Post by John W. Whitehead

RIP George Romero (1940-2017).

Romero—a filmmaker hailed as the architect of the zombie genre—is dead at the age of 77, but the zombified police state culture he railed against lives on.

Just take a look around you.

“We the people” have become the walking dead of the American police state.

We’re still plagued by the socio-political evils of cultural apathy, materialism, domestic militarism and racism that Romero depicted in his Night of the Living Dead trilogy.

Romero’s zombies have taken on a life of their own in pop culture.

Zombies also embody the government’s paranoia about the citizenry as potential threats that need to be monitored, tracked, surveilled, sequestered, deterred, vanquished and rendered impotent.

Case in point: in AMC’s hit television series The Walking Dead and the spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, it’s not just flesh-eating ghouls and cannibalistic humans that survivors have to worry about but the police state “tasked with protecting the vulnerable” that poses some of the gravest threats to the citizenry.

Why the fascination with zombies?

Perhaps it’s because zombie fiction provides us with a way to “envision how we and our own would thrive if everything went to hell and we lost all our societal supports.” As Time magazine reporter James Poniewozik phrases it, the “apocalyptic drama lets us face the end of the world once a week and live.”

In other words, zombies are the personification of our darkest fears.

Fear and paranoia have become hallmarks of the modern American experience, impacting how we as a nation view the world around us, how we as citizens view each other, and most of all how our government views us.

The propaganda of fear has been used quite effectively by those who want to gain control, and it is working on the American populace.

Despite the fact that we are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist, we have handed over control of our lives to government officials who treat us as a means to an end—the source of money and power.

We have allowed ourselves to become fearful, controlled, pacified zombies.

Most everyone keeps their heads down these days while staring zombie-like into an electronic screen, even when they’re crossing the street. Indeed, a Nielsen study reports that American screen viewing is at an all-time high.

Psychologically, such screen consumption is similar to drug addiction, transforming viewers into a more passive, nonresistant state. Historically, television has been used by those in authority to quiet discontent and pacify disruptive people. Prisons officials actually use TV to keep inmates quiet.

We are being controlled by forces beyond our control.

This is how the police state takes charge.

As the Atlantic notes, “The villains of [Fear the Walking Dead] aren’t the zombies, who rarely appear, but the U.S. military, who sweep into an L.A. suburb to quarantine the survivors. Zombies are, after all, a recognizable threat—but Fear plumbs drama and horror from the betrayal by institutions designed to keep people safe.”

What we are experiencing is a betrayal of the very core values—a love of freedom, an adherence to the rule of law, a spirit of democracy, a commitment to accountability and transparency, and a recognition that civilian rule must always trump military methods—that have guided this nation from its inception.

The challenge is not whether we can hold onto our freedoms in times of peace and prosperity, but whether we can do so when all hell breaks loose.

Anyone who has been paying attention knows that it will not take much for the government—i.e., the military—to lock down the nation in the event of a national disaster.

The government is not out to keep us safe by monitoring our communications, tracking our movements, criminalizing our every action, treating us like suspects, and stripping us of our means of defense while equipping its own personnel with an amazing arsenal of weapons.

No, this is not security. It is an ambush. And it is being carried out in plain sight.

For example, for years now, the government has been carrying out military training drills with zombies as the enemy. In 2011, the DOD created a 31-page instruction manual for how to protect America from a terrorist attack carried out by zombie forces. In 2012, the CDC released a guide for surviving a zombie plague. That was followed by training drills for members of the military, police officers and first responders.

The zombie exercises appeared to be kitschy and fun—government agents running around trying to put down a zombie rebellion—but what if the zombies in the exercises are us, the citizenry, viewed by those in power as mindless, voracious, zombie hordes?

“We the people” or, more appropriately, “we the zombies” are the enemy in the eyes of the government.

So when presented with the Defense Department’s battle plan for defeating an army of the walking dead, you might find yourself tempted to giggle over the fact that a taxpayer-funded government bureaucrat actually took the time to research and write about vegetarian zombies, evil magic zombies, chicken zombies, space zombies, bio-engineered weaponized zombies, radiation zombies, symbiant-induced zombies, and pathogenic zombies.

However, in an age of extreme government paranoia, this is no laughing matter.

The DOD’s strategy for dealing with a zombie uprising using surveillance, military drills, awareness training, militarized police forces and martial law is for all intents and purposes a training manual for the government in how to put down a citizen uprising or at least an uprising of individuals “infected” with dangerous ideas about freedom.

If there is any lesson to be learned, it is simply this: as I point out in my book, Battlefield America: The War on the American People, whether the threat to national security comes in the form of actual terrorists, imaginary zombies or disgruntled American citizens infected with dangerous ideas about freedom, the government’s response to such threats remains the same: detect, deter and annihilate.

It’s time to wake up, America, before you end up with a bullet to the head (the only proven means of killing a zombie).

Land of the Dead is my favorite movie. The zombies start to think critically, or reason! If only.

I could be and am most likely wrong. People need to wake up and realize that they are not in control. It really doesn’t matter to which party or ideology they subscribe.

They did.

And they elected Trump because they did.

Whether that peaceful means will return control to them is still to be seen, it isn’t going to be quick or easy to regain it and the resolve to do it may be lost before it happens.

Never got into the Zombie stuff but I stumbled on a short wave program bounced from Texas thru Tennessee and it was a strong signal that allowed me to test single side band radio installations . This was before the inter net : It was Alex Jones “PRISON PLANET” there is a war on for your mind ! I would tune him in on occasion for kicks , you know the he this dude is out there but then !
Everything that this alleged tinfoil hat wearing conspirency theory nut job was freaking out about turned out to be true some more emphatic then others .
Then it hit me , our government has declared war on us and an elitest group of billionaires and investor class are raping us as a nation economically and morally and coaxing and enticing our own hand to do it unconsciously . Zombie Land !
I took the red pill and now am considered an outcast in my views and thought processes . My family tells me speaking out is dangerous ! I reply , If that is true haven’t we already lost everything we as Americans allegedly stand for ! The reply is Zombie Gurggle !

Not so fearful of the police force as it stands today, yes there are a few bad apples and yes their equipment is trending toward military grade tactical, but I do not think the LEO’s are moving or being moved to create a police state. Until.
The government welfare checks stop. Then every LEO will be swamped with moment by moment life threatening decisions that they will be forced to make because of suddenly starving people looking for their next meal. Things will turn ugly then, not due to conspiracy, but out of the necessity of every man for himself.

OT but, Huge headline on Drudge last night OBAMACARE WILL STAND, there will be no change. No mention of that here? The biggest shakedown of our citizens will continue and will eventually bankrupt this country. Where is El Trump? He was to save us from this evil police state.

Trump did send out a tweet (lame), “we will return”. And then what, failure after failure?

Dear John W. W.,

You have been correct to warn us. The majority
however still like their lives and wish nothing
will change for them. As long as people have a decent
salary, a good neighborhood/school, and some
creature comforts, they will be docile…and hope no
shit hits them in the face.

We have not been free. We are in a total surveillance
mode with all captured and more “brain” control
promised. We are under capital controls. Informants
and spies are amongst us. Our taxes are beyond unfair…
and remember Roberts ruled O-Care cost a tax.
Our schools are Fed. ruled and basically destroyed.
Our food and water are poisoned. The air itself is
poisoned. Big corps ( you know who they are) are
running the show, and the show includes the MIC.
Propaganda is ubiquitous, and it is quite “legal” for
gov to lie and cheat us every way they want to.
Pols are controlled by their “control files” voluntarily
BTW, because “I need to be part of the club to make
money.”
The big cop-peroos are just waiting inside the tree
line, ready to pounce if given the signal.

So do we all contract for cyanide pills? NO
What we do is not participate, as much as we
can avoid. Form community…and as much as
possible, get out of big city highrise-ville.
Most won’t, because they can not show off nice
clothes, cars, jewelry, and lifestyle perks such as
symphony and rep theater on dirt roads with muddy
trucks. Suits me, I don’t even miss it. The peace
and quiet, open sky, trees and birds, frogs and toads
and even snakes, deer and bears are welcome. We
have eagles flying up there with the hawks, BTW.

I hope you have an away retreat yourself Mr. John W.W. You certainly deserve it. Now please write another book on the tips you have gleaned
for avoiding the evil eye in the sky. Strategies,
you know, the good stuff that the insiders practice.
It would be a totally appreciated effort.

Thanks, Suzanna

— “Despite the fact that we are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist”

This is incredibly dense nonsense.

There is a very small portion of the population who has an astronomically higher chance of being killed by a police officer than the rest of the population due to their daily activities and behaviors.

Most of the people killed in the recent terrorist attacks in the US and Europe were not the ones that stood any meaningful chance of getting into a situation with cops that will end in violence.

Raz,thinking exactly what you wrote. Idiots who act like a Chris Rock video have a ver high chance of being shot by the police.

Don’t be bad with statistics. What happened in Minnesota was a rare incident (thus all the attention) compared to the majority of people shot by cops.

People committing crimes, and people who choose to get aggressive with an armed person, have an astronomically higher chance of being shot by cops than the average population.

That doesn’t make them the only ones, it makes them the most likely ones.

However innocent/unrelated people stand the greatest chance of being killed by a terrorist attack. So using the 8 times more likely statement as having any meaning is DENSE and wrong if it’s being used to trivialize the consequences of terrorist acts.

If we were to use that we could take almost any other cause of death caused by other people’s behavior (traffic accidents) to trivialize death by cop into insignificance as well.

That’s why the line is stupid.

W.E. (the people…aka the chaingang) – Walking Expired.
BOSS PAUL
Luke! Water ’em.

Without a moments hesitation, Luke jogs over and gets the
water pail and dipper from Rabbit and moves to the group of
men.

CLOSE THE GROUP

as Luke moves around filling their cups. The men are silent,
some embarrassed, some sympathetic, some confused, some
disappointed.

CLOSE GODFREY

He signals with his cane for his rifle.

ON RABBIT

He hurries to the cab of the truck, gets Godfrey’s rifle.
The other men, but not Luke, watch as Godfrey slips in the
bolt, loads, fires at something out in the swamp.

ON BOSS PAUL

As Godfrey takes bolt out of rifle, returns the gun to Rabbit.

BOSS PAUL
Go git it, Luke.

LUKE
Yes sir, Boss Paul!

Grinning, cheerful, he begins to hobble away through the
swamp and grass.

CLOSE ANGLE ON TURTLE IN THE MUCK

Luke’s hands COME INTO FRAME AND OFFER the head a stick. The
jaws clamp down on the stick and Luke lifts the turtle up.

FULL SHOT LUKE

grinning, holding up the turtle by the stick.

LUKE
Here he is, Boss. Deader’n hell but
he won’t let go.

THE GROUP

as Luke walks back through them carrying the turtle.

BOSS PAUL
You cut that up fer lunch, Luke.

LUKE
Yes, Boss.

He moves off toward the trucks with the turtle, and we HOLD
on the disappointed reactions of the men, featuring Dragline.

Then there is the SOUND of a motor starting.

ON THE GROUP NEW ANGLE

as they turn to look, as one man.
