Calls To Imprison “Climate Change Deniers” Grow In The Wake Of Hurricane Irma

Tyler Durden's picture

When retired Georgia Tech professor Judith Curry penned a blog post on her “Climate Etc.” website suggesting that it was scientifically irresponsible to tie the intensity of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma directly to climate change, she probably didn’t expect that she might trigger 1,000’s of progressives to call for her immediate imprisonment.  Unfortunately, for both Curry and society at large, that is exactly what happened.

Here is part of Curry’s post that potentially resulted in this latest ‘mass-triggering’ event:

It is premature to conclude that human activities–and particularly greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming–have already had a detectable impact on Atlantic hurricane or global tropical cyclone activity. That said, human activities may have already caused changes that are not yet detectable due to the small magnitude of the changes or observational limitations, or are not yet confidently modeled (e.g., aerosol effects on regional climate).

As the Washington Times notes, Curry’s comments only served to further enrage Al Gore’s climate change crusaders who promptly ramped up their calls to imprison anyone with the audacity to present any data and/or question, in any way, climate models which should be accepted as proven fact…even though they’re subjective and highly sensitive any number of input variables.

That is the kind of talk that could get policymakers who heed her research hauled before the justice system, if some of those in the climate change movement have their way.

“Climate change denial should be a crime,” declared the Sept. 1 headline in the Outline. Mark Hertsgaard argued in a Sept. 7 article in the Nation, titled “Climate Denialism Is Literally Killing Us,” that “murder is murder” and “we should punish it as such.”

The suggestion that those who run afoul of the climate change consensus, in particular government officials, should face charges comes with temperatures flaring over the link between hurricanes and greenhouse gas emissions.

“In the wake of Harvey, it’s time to treat science denial as gross negligence — and hold those who do the denying accountable,” said the subhead in the Outline article, written by Brian Merchant.

Brad Johnson, executive director of Climate Hawks Vote, posted last week on Twitter a set of “climate disaster response rules,” the third of which was to “put officials who reject science in jail.”

PB

And while we’re not sure if imprisonment is the right punishment, it does seem a bit outrageous for a Georgia Tech climate scientist to challenge the opinions of both the Pope and Sir Richard Branson on climate change...who does she think she is?

Meanwhile, Pope Francis said the two Category 4 storms offer proof of catastrophic climate change, even though they are the first two major hurricanes to make landfall on the U.S. mainland in 12 years.

“You can see the effects of climate change with your own eyes, and scientists tell us clearly the way forward,” said the pontiff, adding that leaders have a “moral responsibility” to take action.

“Man-made climate change is contributing to increasingly strong hurricanes causing unprecedented damage,” Mr. Branson said in a Friday statement. “The whole world should be scrambling to get on top of the climate change issue before it is too late for this generation, let alone the generations to come.”

Of course, while we would never question the opinions of the Pope and/or a Knight, we do find the following chart on U.S. hurricane strikes by decade to be somewhat perplexing.  Why, for example, were U.S. hurricane strikes above average for almost every decade between 1870 and 1950 before declining in the 1950s through 2000?  If hurricane frequency can suddenly be linked directly to climate change in 2017, shouldn’t it have produced similarly alarming hurricanes in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s?  If we’re not mistaken, CO2 output has pretty much consistently risen since man first started building fires…

Hurricanes

Of course, maybe the extreme weather events have simply shifted away from the U.S. and global hurricane strikes are the more relevant metric…except not…

Globa;

Oh well, we probably just don’t understand the math…

There is scientific evidence to support the theory that our planet, over millions of years, has transited between a total iceball to being tropical from pole to pole. Oceans are rising, a process that began at the end of the last ice age, 10 t0 14 thousands years ago. Read “Noah’s Flood” for a possible explanation of the biblical flood. Sea levels rose +/- 280 feet to flood an inland fresh water lake that became the Black Sea, and sent the lakeside dwellers fleeing in several directions, carrying their story with them. There are fresh water shells in the silt below the newer salt water intruders, and recent discoveries of human settlements on the former lakeside.
While humans may be contributing or not, there are likely more powerful forces at play. Our activity may be adding to a process already in play. One super volcano can blanket the earth with enough cloud cover to alter seasons in our temperate zones. The planet wobbles and changes its tilt, its orbit may be altered and solar output is far from constant. Lots of possible variables, like our solar system passing through dust clouds as it revolves around the galactic center, which is also moving through space and encountering the remains of long dead stars.
Change, the only constant. Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it is sudden.

Interestingly that 25,000 years ago, there was 6 miles thick of ice over my current home, and 15,000 years ago, the discovery of tropical plant seeds in an inland lake, fairly close to me, in about 70 feet of muck, below the lake bottom. The science dude was told he was not permitted to discuss the tropical seed find with any media. The core samples of the lake bottom he showed me, foretold of a very active climate change scenario in the Pacific Northwest over the past 100,000 years.

Musta been the cave dwellers and their camp fires in Africa huh? Not sure how the tropical plants got here ……

More brainless leftie trash – imprison anyone who’s views differ from their own UNPROVEN beliefs.
Remember Galileo? Imprisoned for life in the 1600’s for daring to contradict the totally false belief held by all the ‘learned men’ of that era that the Earth was the centre if the universe. I take exception to the AGW crowd using the generic term ‘climate change’ instead of the disproven ‘warming’. Climate change is a universal cyclic dynamic. Look at the BS MSM reporting of Harvey…once in 1000 years. Total LIE. Look at the hurricanes since 1900 – Harvey ranks #7! More severe ones happened before the ww2 industrial revolution so hardly due to man and co2 eh…
Mankind is entering a new dark age of ignorance and they will reap what they sow.
Any idea or belief that fails analysis or criticism does not deserve to survive.

CAGW changed to GW cuz 50% of citizens couldn’t spell or pronounce two of the words in CAGW (thus no understanding).

GW changed to Climate Change as it wasn’t warming so with the new moniker, everything negative is caused by the CO2 Magic Molecule.

Perhaps the warmers can say why they’ve been caught out countless times fabricating and falsifying data when there would be no need to do so if warming is so obviously true and undeniable….
Yep…

What do we do with the ‘scientists’ that have been repeatedly caught falsifying temperature data, to support the – increasingly obviously illusory – global warming?

If falsifying data to support what is clearly a political and economic scam of unprecedented scale isn’t scientific heresy, I don’t know what would be.

Death by pressing?
The rack?
Iron maiden?
Dunking?
Crucifixion?
Maybe we could have them fight lions to the death in a dedicated arena?

Global warming isn’t science – their belief exists despite all facts to the contrary – it’s a religion, and an increasingly insane one at that.

Got into an argument with a global warming alarmist over the weekend. Her big argument was that gas pipelines in the US had “a thousand” leaks that were leaking methane into the atmosphere. It was so outrageously stupid and meaningless even for those who believe in global warming that it actually left me speechless and I just walked away. I suppose I could have told her that her and her buddies farts contain much more methane than the gas pipeline leaks and that they should just kill themselves if they’re that concerned about methane. On second thought, I guess it was better just to walk away.

I am a mechanical engineer and know a little about the three heat transfer methods; conductivity, convection, and radiation. I A’ed heat transfer at Purdue. If the atmosphere is a blanket, then a blanket that holds heat has a LOWER thermal conductivity. A blanket that holds less heat has a HIGHER thermal conductivity. One can calculate a weighted average thermal conductivity for the gases “blanketing” the earth.
Here is a list of thermal conductivities for gases.

People say methane is a big contributor to warming but its thermal conductivity is about 23% higher than air. It should facilitate heat flowing away from the earth. In theory a “blanket” filled with methane would let more heat through than a “blanket” of plain air.

I have googled and asked friends who are real climate change freaks but they cannot explain the mechanism that supposedly makes methane so bad. They never thought to think of gases thermal conductivities. Does anybody know the mechanism of methane?

I think CO2 is more of an insulator since it reflects back the IR frequencies instead of letting them pass uninhibited.

Thermal conductivities of Gases @300K mW/Mk
Methane 34.1
Air 26.2
Oxygen 26.3
nitrogen 26
Water 18.7(vapor)
CO2 16.8

The State/Cathedral/Narrative/Elites/Whatev understands just how precarious a position they are in. They know that until now they have been able to ignore or ridicule with efficacy anyone who challenges the orthodoxy of their dominion. Clearly that strategy is beginning to change and is now focusing on a violent response. This is natural and it is amply supported by historical equivalents. It is the way all cultures deconstruct and fail.

All cultures in the degenerate portion of their life cycle lash out and attempt to silence their critics with imprisonment and death, often mass murder. Sometimes they prolong the end stage, but inevitably they always, in every single instance fail and then the cycle begins anew. The underlying principles of cyclical systems in living organisms is unalterable. This cannot be mitigated, it cannot be reversed and it must fulfill it’s inevitable destiny as with all living things.

On the news here, a local meteorologist was asked about the recent hurricanes and any connection with global warming. He said it was true that the climate had warmed in the last 150 years. It was also true that human activity had contributed to it, but how big an effect it had was unknown. He said it was hard to say at the point whether the hurricanes had anything to do with the global warming, or if they were the result of normal climate fluctuations.

In short, we don’t know if there is a connection, and if there is, how much human activity is at fault.

I suspect that this is probably the view of most professionals in that field. It could be true, but who knows? It is only the gw fanatics that insist it is settled science.
