Mass Shootings: The Military-Entertainment Complex’s Culture of Violence Turns Deadly

Guest Post by John W. Whitehead

This latest mass shooting in Las Vegas that left more than 50 people dead and more than 500 injured is as obscure as they come: a 64-year-old retiree with no apparent criminal history, no military training, and no obvious axe to grind opens fire on a country music concert crowd from a hotel room 32 floors up using a semi-automatic gun that may have been rigged to fire up to 700 rounds a minute, then kills himself.

We’re left with more questions than answers, none of them a flattering reflection of the nation’s values, political priorities, or the manner in which the military-industrial complex continues to dominate, dictate and shape almost every aspect of our lives.

For starters, why do these mass shootings keep happening? Mass shootings have taken place at churches, in nightclubs, on college campuses, on military bases, in elementary schools, in government offices, and at concerts. This shooting is the deadliest to date.

What is it about America that makes violence our nation’s calling card?

Is it because America is a gun culture?

Is it because guns are so readily available? After all, the U.S. is home to more firearms than adults. Curiously enough, the majority of gun-related deaths in the U.S. are suicides, not homicides.

Is it because entertainment violence is the hottest selling ticket at the box office?

Is it because the government continues to whet the nation’s appetite for violence and war through paid propaganda programs (seeded throughout sports entertainment, Hollywood blockbusters and video games)—what professor Roger Stahl refers to as “militainment”—that glorify the military and serve as recruiting tools for America’s expanding military empire?

Is it because the United States is the number one consumer, exporter and perpetrator of violence and violent weapons in the world? America spends more money on war than other countries. America polices the globe, with 800 military bases and troops stationed in 160 countries. And the war hawks have turned the American homeland into a quasi-battlefield with military gear, weapons and tactics. In turn, domestic police forces have become roving extensions of the military—a standing army.

Or is the Second Amendment to blame, as many continue to suggest? Would there be fewer mass shootings if tighter gun control laws were enacted?

Then again, could it be, as some have speculated, that these shootings are all part of an elaborate plan to incite fear and chaos, heighten national tensions and shift us that much closer to a complete lockdown? After all, the military and our militarized police forces have been predicting and preparing for exactly this kind of scenario for years now.

Perhaps there’s no single one factor to blame for this gun violence. However, there is a common denominator, and that is a war-drenched, violence-imbued, profit-driven military industrial complex that has invaded almost every aspect of our lives.

Ask yourself: Who are these shooters modelling themselves after? Where are they finding the inspiration for their weaponry and tactics? Whose stance and techniques are they mirroring?

In almost every instance, you can connect the dots back to the military.

We are a military culture.

We have been a nation at war for most of our existence.

We are a nation that makes a living from killing through defense contracts, weapons manufacturing and endless wars.

In order to sustain the nation’s appetite for war over the long haul in spite of the costs of war in lives lost and dollars spent—and little else to show for it—the military has had to work overtime to churn out pro-war, pro-military propaganda. It’s exactly what President Eisenhower warned against (“the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex”) in his 1961 farewell address.

We didn’t listen then and we’re still not listening now.

All the while, the government’s war propaganda machine has grown more sophisticated and entrenched in American culture.

All of the military equipment featured in blockbuster movies such as X-Men and Transformers is provided—at taxpayer expense—in exchange for carefully placed promotional spots aimed at indoctrinating the American populace into believing that patriotism means throwing their support behind the military wholeheartedly and unquestioningly.

Even reality TV shows have gotten in on the gig.

It’s estimated that U.S. military intelligence agencies (including the NSA) have influenced over 1,800 movies and TV shows.

And then there are the growing number of video games, a number of which are engineered by or created for the military, which have accustomed players to interactive war play through military simulations and first-person shooter scenarios.

This is how you acclimate a population to war.

This is how you cultivate loyalty to a war machine.

Not satisfied with peddling its war propaganda through Hollywood, reality TV shows and embedded journalists whose reports came across as glorified promotional ads for the military, the Pentagon turned to sports to further advance its agenda, “tying the symbols of sports with the symbols of war.”

The military has been firmly entrenched in the nation’s sports spectacles ever since.

Remember, just before this Vegas shooting gave the media, the politicians and the easily distracted public something new to obsess over, the headlines were dominated by President Trump’s feud with the NFL over players kneeling during the national anthem.

That, too, was yet another example of how much the military entertainment complex—which paid $53 million of taxpayer money between 2012 and 2015 to pro sports teams for military tributes—has infiltrated American culture.

Are you starting to get the picture now?

When you talk about the Las Vegas mass shooting, you’re not dealing with a single shooter scenario. Rather, you’re dealing with a sophisticated, far-reaching war machine that has woven itself into the very fabric of this nation.

You want to stop the gun violence?

Stop the worship of violence that permeates our culture.

Stop glorifying the military industrial complex with flyovers and salutes during sports spectacles.

Stop acting as if there is anything patriotic about military exercises and occupations that bomb hospitals and schools.

Stop treating guns and war as entertainment fodder in movies, music, video games, toys, amusement parks, reality TV and more.

Stop distribution weapons of war to the local police and turning them into extensions of the military—weapons that have no business being anywhere but on a battlefield.

Most of all, as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People, stop falling for the military industrial complex’s psychological war games.

How about the good Old Wrath of God .We glorified war alot more in the 40 s ,50 s and 60s .Look at how many flims were made that glorified Americans killing and Destroying Nazis . What has changed is this nation has committed apostasy like no other nation on Earth.Read the book of say ” Isaiah ,Jermiah or better Hosea ” This will give you an idea of what’s happening and Why . When Nations reject God He rejects them in his wrath which destorys them.

Jesus Christ.. you know what else happened between 1962 and 2008?? The US Population almost FUCKING DOubLED!! 186.5 million to 326 million.

There’re more mass shootings because there is more “mass”. And more mass doesn’t just have a linear effect, but an exponential one, with lots of feedback loops: more bureaucracy, more social “controls”, more sucky human interactions, more stress, etc. Those who seek to impose “empty world” morals onto a full world are going to be severely dismayed.

People are so fucking innumerate, it’s painful to me.

There’s a reasons the rats in that 1960s experiment lost their minds.

Greetings,

Something interesting happens when a celebrity kills himself. The interesting thing that happens is that there is an immediate spike in suicides. Monkey see, monkey do. So, if a well publicized suicide is all it takes to get people to kill themselves, what does the endless violence pushed out by Hollywood do to the population? Netflix, Hulu and YouTube now provide 24hr Hollywood gun violence directly into the home. Monkey see, monkey do.

Violence everywhere!

The mass media presents an endless cornucopia of people solving a problem with violence whether it is the local news, national news, video games, television or movies. We are bombarded with it non-stop. Is it any wonder that people snap?

Something else to throw out there is the fact that many people no longer experience negative consequences for their stupid actions nor do they believe that they will be held to account in some afterlife. I can well imagine the person that just received some bad news like incurable brain cancer deciding to go out with a bang. After all, there are no consequences.

265 million guns in private hands. Estimate 30 million AR platforms alone. An estimated 18.8 million veterans still alive who had at least basic training.
Mass shootings average 90 per year if we include multiple death drug and gang related but drop to 7 a year with average deaths of less than 100 per year.

This is 2 months in Chicago. If we had a real problem with mass casualty events like this the number would be so much higher. Not saying it does not hurt and we do not ache for the victims but OMFG McDonalds kills THOUSANDS a year.

Also read your book. You need an editor.

A fish rots from the head. In a culture where the citizenry can observe that their gov’t solves every disagreement at every level with force, eventually the citizens follow suit.

Eventually Has Arrived.

I’m waiting for the Trump-Russia connection to this massacre.
Excerpt from 1984:

Before the Hate had proceeded for thirty seconds, uncontrollable exclamations of rage were breaking out from half the people in the room. The self-satisfied sheep-like face on the screen, and the terrifying power of the Eurasian army behind it, were too much to be borne: besides, the sight or even the thought of Goldstein produced fear and anger automatically. He was an object of hatred more constant than either Eurasia or Eastasia, since when Oceania was at war with one of these Powers it was generally at peace with the other. But what was strange was that although Goldstein was hated and despised by everybody, although every day and a thousand times a day, on platforms, on the telescreen, in newspapers, in books, his theories were refuted, smashed, ridiculed, held up to the general gaze for the pitiful rubbish that they were in spite of all this, his influence never seemed to grow less. Always there were fresh dupes waiting to be seduced by him. A day never passed when spies and saboteurs acting under his directions were not unmasked by the Thought Police. He was the commander of a vast shadowy army, an underground network of conspirators dedicated to the overthrow of the State. The Brotherhood, its name was supposed to be. There were also whispered stories of a terrible book, a compendium of all the heresies, of which Goldstein was the author and which circulated clandestinely here and there. It was a book without a title. People referred to it, if at all, simply as the book. But one knew of such things only through vague rumours. Neither the Brotherhood nor the book was a subject that any ordinary Party member would mention if there was a way of avoiding it.

Russia Russia Russia!

It will be over for the dollar in months not years because 1) the BRICS are destroying the Fiat Dollar with the Gold Backed Yuan (as of 1Sep2017 and later the Ruble); the dollar is the Achilles Heel of our Economy and their backdoor way to destroy our MIC; and 2) TPTB want our dollar killed so they can implement a “Rothschild backed” e-currency (no physical currency will be legal) and the Mark of the Beast (probably a “666-chip”; ref Rev 13:16-17).

There were fewer murders in 2016 than there were in 1976, and there are far more guns in 2016 than in 2076 and a larger population now than then.

The murder rate over that period has dropped from 8.7 to 5.3.

And that is inclusive of all causes, not just guns.

Yet there are more guns now by far, and way far more semi automatic “assault weapon” types of guns, than there were then.

Wonder why we keep talking about a rising epidemic of violence, particularly gun violence?

This wasn’t Joe Schizo hearing voices in his head. This was a guy with problems but also plenty of resources. Beyond the reach of any gun control laws you could possibly pass. He is supposed to own two airplanes. Don’t know what kind but if he wanted to do a murder suicide how would you stop him from crashing even a Cessna Skyhawk with 50 gallons of fuel on board into a concert or a football stadium? Think that wouldn’t kill a 100 or more people?

Wery, Wery interesting; got me thinking.
If the object was to kill as many as possible, load up the plane with gas and fly into a NFL game.

Thus, it may have been political with the venue being a country western concert. Most liberals seem to be mentally unbalanced.

Note: I wonder if the NFL has the military flying escort over NFL games.

The whole Universe is a place of violence. Jesus said, “Since the days of John the Baptist there has been war in heaven and the violent take it by force.” Luke 19:27… “Bring all those that would not have me be their King to this stone and kill them.” And in other places in scripture, “Those killed by the Lord shall cover the earth on that day.”…”He will destroy the wicked with the brightness of His appearing.” And there are many more references in that book many mistakenly call a ‘love letter’. So much for the heretics view of the ‘Loving little Hippified Jesus that wouldn’t harm a fly. You wonder why Senor Mad Dog Dipstick committed a mass shooting in Vegas…because he chose too, and he had the resources to purchase the assets which made him the greatest mass shooter in American history. Yet, there will be another one, and another one after him/her, and it will go on forever, because that ‘love letter’ says in another place, “The thoughts of mankind are continually evil”…”Each generation of mankind shall wax worse and worse”…”The love of many shall wax cold for lawlessness will abound’…In fact, it is written in scripture that God destroyed the world in Noah’s day, “Because violence filled the earth”. And you are so naïve as to believe that the libtards, led by witch Hillary, can stop it all with legislation, or that the conservaturds and T-RUMP have the ability to make America great again. Good luck with all that nonsense, Get used to it, we are in for the long haul and no amount of gun control, prison sentences, parole, probation, tough love, rehabilitation, or church pews will stop it. King Jesus will separate the Wheat from the Tares when he returns and until then violence will continue unabated and for the most part, unpunished. That is a fact. thanks

You’re presenting – Luke 19:27… “Bring all those that would not have me be their King to this stone and kill them.” As words Jesus was saying of himself, that’s totally FALSE. Go back and read Luke chapter 19 and you’ll see that Jesus was telling the parable of a Nobleman.

Luke 19:11 – “As they heard these things, he continued and told them a parable”—

Luke 19:12 – “A Nobleman (King) went to a distant country to receive a kingdom and to return”

So in Luke 19:27, Jesus is telling the story of what the Nobleman is saying to his servants… “Bring all those that would not have me be their King to this stone and kill them.”

So to present those words as Jesus saying that of himself is either ignorance of the truth and parroting what others claim, or your intent is to deceive.

All one has to do is read the entire chapter 19 of Luke and see that what I say is true and that what you did was take one scripture completely out of context to create a FALSE impression.

Wrong! Either way you read it, Jesus orders the death of those who would not have Him reign over them. It’s just that simple.

Paddock killed 59. He is nothing. One man and 23 guns. Did he bring that weaponry alone or was he aided? Who was he complicit with? 59 wasted lives…while your gun control arguments salve your pain.

Sad but true and telling that American TV executives, cockroaches, rejoiced and reasoned that it was dead Trumpers so it didn’t matter. In Chicago 700 blacks die in a Democratically controlled city, while you and they reason that it is black gang drug users who are killed. Are you any different?

And outraged as you might appear, the truth is that 72 hours after Paddock’s last bullets were fired you America, my America, will be back watching Netflix, shopping at Amazon, Wal-Mart and Costco oblivious to the world, safe, in your fishbowls of farms, suburbs, penthouses and ghettoes arguing about NFL Knees. Your lives will go on unaffected. This was nothing but garish entertainment on the Reality TeeVee.

Mao Ze dong killed millions and your leaders still run in fear of his followers even today. They steal your technology, your money and your lifestyle from you, while you cower in fear, sailing boats like toys past their islands afraid to fire a shot, only to see your warships nearly sunk by cargo ships. Your business owners’ greed lets them do this so you can buy cheap items for $2.99 at The Dollar Store.

For the last 30 years you have financed the lifestyle of every oligarch and peasant from bicycles to BMWs (which even you cannot afford)…and now their leader extols the virtues of his communist ways telling the people it is Communism that has built his country and is clearly the superior way…when in fact, his is the last country in the world to extol communist virtue. In reality, you, the American consumer, have made his country great again. Yet, what has happened to yours?

Oh, America…where are you now? Can you not see that the cost of freedom is high? And sometimes it is the blood of innocents that has the highest value?

This same Mao, the one these leaders still follow, wisely said that power comes from the barrel of a gun. You, The People, have the guns. You have the power and you no longer know how to use it. It sits there surrendered by you. You debate and talk among yourselves as if the gun is your enemy when it really is your friend. What others on this Earth would and are kept from doing to have that one freedom!

Open your eyes. Don’t hide your heritage. Don’t flee from it. Rediscover it. Extol the virtues and the cost of freedom, while you can still do so.
