COOL AS A CUCUMBER

Engine blew on a Southwest flight from NY to Dallas. Shrapnel blew out a window and sucked a passenger through the hole, killing her. Emergency landing in Philly was required. The pilot was Tammy Jo Shults. She is well suited to her job.

Here’s audio of the call between the Southwest Airlines 1380 pilot and air traffic control, edited for length and clarity. The audio was downloaded from LiveATC.net. The pilot stays remarkably calm throughout the harrowing incident.

The pilot notes in the audio that the plane wasn’t on fire, however, there was only one engine functioning in what was supposed to be a twin engine plane. NBC reports that fire department officials doused a small fire on site.

Amazing Chick Pilot !!! She talks about one engine and a hole in the plane where a passenger was sucked out, so matter of fact, like she is ordering coffee at DD.

Kudos to her !!

I’d hope any commercial pilot would react the same in that situation. Amazing job though, she owned that situation like a boss. What’s even more significant to me is that this is the first fatality in US commercial aviation since 2009. We went almost a decade without one death. Remarkable how safe air travel is in the worlds busiest skies. Growing up in the 1980’s it seemed like there was a big crash every year.

You forgot about Captains, Ho-Lee-Fuk & We-Tu-Lo in San Fran on a 777 in 2013.

Fantastic… but women still have no place in fighter jets, combat, or political office.

Great… the Navy had to lower it’s piloting standards *10 times* in order for the first female fighter pilot to get her wings.

The first solo carrier landing attempted by a female pilot resulted in the deaths of 11 men.

Shall I continue?

You sound like a sexist! Sexism has no place in our liberal democracy! A woman can do anything a man can do, after requirements have been adjusted accordingly, and don’t you forget it! I know I won’t!

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR SEAT BELT ON! Even if the air is smooth – CAT (Clear Air Turbulence) has hurt passengers and cabin personnel; also thrown loose objects may hit you.

Only remove to go to rest room, then buckle back up upon returning to your seat.

Stay attached to the plane seat until plane is at gate and boarding exits have been opened.

Have a safe flight and good luck with the ride into NY, Detroit, Cleveland, LAX, Philly, DCA, MSY and MIA other blue cities. Check out UBER for armored vehicles.

The ATC that told her she was cleared for two seven right needs to be fired. She was cleared for two seven left. An emergency of this magnitude and his head wasn’t even in the game. He needs to go.

The MIRACLE in this event is that the destroyed engine did not catch fire—That’s a MIRACLE.

Sounds like a maintenance issue. Pilot handled that with calm professionalism. RIP to the passenger.

“Southwest Airlines has 30 days to respond to the Federal Aviation Administration after the FAA announced Monday it will seek a $12 million civil penalty for Southwest’s failure to comply with Federal Aviation Regulations in three separate cases related to repairs on Boeing 737 jetliners.”

The aircraft was a 737.

“Back in February, the airline had to cancel dozens of flights after learning that one-fifth of its entire fleet was overdue for necessary maintenance checks. In all, the airline had to ground 128 planes pending inspection, but reached a deal with the FAA that allowed the jets to continue flying.”

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2015/11/airplane-maintenance-disturbing-truth

In the last decade, most of the big U.S. airlines have shifted major maintenance work to places like El Salvador, Mexico, and China, where few mechanics are F.A.A. certified and inspections have no teeth.

“The work is labor-intensive and complicated, and the technical manuals are written in English, the language of international aviation. According to regulations, in order to receive F.A.A. certification as a mechanic, a worker needs to be able to “read, speak, write, and comprehend spoken English.” Most of the mechanics in El Salvador and some other developing countries who take apart the big jets and then put them back together are unable to meet this standard. At Aeroman’s El Salvador facility, only one mechanic out of eight is F.A.A.-certified. At a major overhaul base used by United Airlines in China, the ratio is one F.A.A.-certified mechanic for every 31 non-certified mechanics.”

Jet Blue being another. This is a very controversial issue that the public should be aware. A disclosure by all airlines as to where the aircraft is overhauled and who is overhauling the aircraft you’re flying should be required. Hell, we now mandate that fruits and vegetables indicated the country grown. Canned fish must indicated where caught and packed.
Pilots operating your flight is another issue. Under code sharing, your might think your flying a major airline with that airlines well trained, highly qulified pilots, but end up in a plane operated by a third party using low time, much less experienced and very much less compensated pilots. Colgan Air operating Continental Connection flt. 3407 will scare the shit out of anyone flying regional routes.
Look that one up. # 3407 was a watershed crash that went right down to the basic level of who should be flying your commercial flight.

CO 3407 was pilot error. Yes, the captain and FO were discussing low pay and such prior to the accident but there have been crashes in the past with pilots talking about sex and other such topics prior to a pilot error incident. There are reasons for a sterile cockpit. AF 447 crashed due to the same error as CO 3407 but that one took out 228 people.

Was she the Captain? The pilot on the radio is the non-flying pilot. In some serious emergencies, the Captain will fly the plane and the First Officer (co-pilot) will work the radios in most cases. The Captain will make the decision as to where to land and how the plane is to be flown. Single engine flight alone, without a fire, and no control issues is not a big deal for experienced Airline Transport Pilots (commercial pilot is a low level rating vs much higher ATP pilot), but aircraft damage can change the whole thing. United flt. 232, a DC-10 in Sioux City being an excellent example of the catastrophic game changer . This is not the first time this has happened. A delta MD-88 had a left engine lose a blade on takeoff that went through the casing and the fuselage killing a mother and her son in the mid 90’s.

The captain of UA232 did a far more heroic maneuver to save lives on that doomed aircraft. They also have a DC-10 flight instructor on board that flight which also absolutely saved lives. It’s a miracle anyone survived that flight where the problem was entirely a poor design by Douglass Aircraft. Had that been an L-1011 it would’ve been a non-issue and the plane would’ve landed fine just like WN’s flight yesterday.
