“Balance of Nature” is a fraud company. Claims about “fruits and veggies in a pill” is a scam.

What I hope to accomplish by this title is that when umpteen thousands of folks google something such as,  “is balance of nature a scam” that they will find this page …. and save themselves hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on a marginal product which promises the moon, but delivers crap-in-a-pill.

The reason I’m writing this article is because  I’ve been doing extensive research trying to find natural (non-drug) ways to battle my beloved’s bout with cognitive decline — which may, or may not, be Alzheimer’s.  And sure enough, Balance of Nature has testimonials that these fruits-and-veggies-in-a-capsule can alleviate cognitive decline!!

I’m fairly well educated, and well read, and I have the time to do research. I’m writing for the guy or gal in Paducah , KY who has a loved one facing mental decline, does a quickie search, and then thinks he has found an answer that will help his or her spouse. Companies that spread false hope need to be put out of business, and their executives brought to justice. (Dr. Douglas Howard is founder and President.)

WHAT IT CURES OR RELIEVES

Balance of Nature (BoN) advertises very heavily on talk radio …. as in every single day, and several spots per hour.  On weekends they run infomercials that run for several hours in a monotonous repetitive loop.  Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Mark Levin and others whore out their names by personally endorsing and pushing this product during their broadcasts.

Virtually every single commercial is nothing but some customer (wink, wink) giving their personal anecdotes on how gosh-darn wonderful this product is.  Some people claim it has actually saved their lives.  Below are just some of the benefits claimed by users of the product either via the commercials or, the BoN web site:

“… cancer has virtually disappeared, healthy hair and nails, normalizes thyroid levels, reduces blood pressure,  B12 shots no longer needed, diabetes practically disappears, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, acne, makes skin glow, weight reduction, resolves deep cognitive issues, colds go away faster if they appear at all, glaucoma and better vision all around, lowers cholesterol, migraine relief,  etc., ad infinitum ad absurdum.”

That’s their advertising hook; everyone has something that BoN can fix! Although, I haven’t yet heard or read that BoN will heal tooth cavities or cure anal warts. On the other hand, it might even cure anal warts if some customer shoves 3 capsules up their ass for a month, and then submits a testimonial.

TO HELL WITH YOUR TESTIMONIALS!!!  —–   WHERE IS THE SCIENCE?????

Regarding this product and its outrageous claims that it provides for better health by curing just about everything, here are the number of peer-review studies backing such claims and published in reputable medical journals;  ZERO.

It bears repeating; there is no science backing up any of their claims. Instead, they rely on what I will call “imputed science”.  By this I mean that;

— 1) there are indeed studies which show that broccoli (as just one example) is very good for you, and may even help prevent cancer,

— 2) and,  since BoN contains broccoli,

— 3) therefore BoN is supported by science!  (Of course, such convoluted reasoning is illogical on so many levels.)

Yet, even though there are no such studies, they write this on their web page;

“Our success stories are unsolicited. Our research is thorough and reliable. Each study has been conducted by third-party hospitals, universities, or research departments.”

This is an outright lie. This author could not find anything about their “research” nor a single “study” either on the BoN website, or anywhere on the Internet.  They do tell the truth in the “Disclaimers” section of their web site.  They write (CAPS are theirs);

“IT [fruits and veggies in a capsule]  IS NOT INTENDED AS MEDICAL OR HEALTH CARE ADVICE, OR TO BE USED FOR MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS OR TREATMENT, FOR ANY INDIVIDUAL PROBLEM.”

In other words, after bombarding Americans with tens of thousands of testimonials that their product cures everything, and falsely claiming they have studies which prove these claims …. they then basically tell you not to believe any of it!

EGREGIOUSLY DECEPTIVE LABELING — Fruits & Veggies

Image result for balance of nature ingredients

I read all labels before I purchase any food. Although it may exist, I have never seen any other product labeled in the manner done by BoN.

1)- They list their ingredients alphabetically! The standard convention is to list ingredients by amounts — usually, the biggest by weight are listed first, then the next biggest, etc.

By listing them alphabetically you, the consumer, have absolutely no idea which fruits and veggies are most prevalent in their formula. You have absolutely no idea whether or not your fruit pill is 90% apple, or some other cheaper ingredient. You have absolutely no idea whether or not your veggie pill is 90% soy, or some other cheaper ingredient with less nutritional value than an expensive vegetable. This is so deceptive (and, unhelpful) that it seems reasonable to conclude that this deception was done on purpose — to hide something (for example, you fruit pill is basically an apple!).

Worse yet, their veggies contain soy! Again, you have no idea how much soy (a very very cheap product). What if it’s 50% soy?  You would be very hard pressed to find any nutritional experts who think that people would benefit from more soybean in their diet. Yet, there it is. And what does BoN say about soybeans on their webpage?  Unbelievably, this …

“Conclusion: Eat Soybeans. They’re good for you. There are no studies that have been conducted on whole, unprocessed, natural soybeans that show negative results.”

2)- BoN does NOT list any Minimum Daily Requirement (MDA) percentages!

This is utterly astonishing. Keep in mind that BoN claims that when you take their pills you are eating the equivalent of more than 10 servings of fruits and vegetables.  Anyone eating ten servings of fruits and vegetables would expect to see about 100% MDA in several key areas; Vitamin C, Vitamin A, etc.  Yet, you, the consumer has no idea if you’re getting 100% of your MDA — or 10%, or less.   Again, one has to ask; “What are they hiding?”

The label does not even contain common percentage information about carbohydrate, sugars, protein, or fat.

EGREGIOUSLY DECEPTIVE LABELING — Fiber & Spice

Image result for balance of nature spice ingredients

Fortunately, their Fiber&Spice label does contain some minimal information.  Again, the spices are listed alphabetically. I’ll bet you’re getting a whole bunch of Allspice (a cheap spice), and just fractions of a gram of Cardamon (a very expensive spice).

But, notice the first three ingredients are psyllium husk, flax seed, and whole apple.  Then notice that fiber is 40% of daily value! In other words, it’s a safe and reasonable assumption that around half of you spice pill is nothing but husk, flax, and apple … leaving you about one measly gram of all the other spices!  (Now we’re starting to understand what they are hiding.)

Why isn’t the product labeled “organic”?

What’s interesting about their labeling is what they left out. The product is NOT “organic”.  This is somewhat odd considering the great lengths they go through on their web page telling you they use only the best ingredients, from reputable farmers, picked only when ripe, etc., etc.  Also interesting is their response (which I find rather cheap and hilariously pathetic);

“Balance of Nature will not use a symbol on our labels and marketing material we feel cheapens it.”

THE ASTRONOMICAL PRODUCT COSTS — $$$

A question many people have is “how do they get all those fruits and veggies in a pill”?

One of their radio commercials informs the listener that it’s because fruits and veggies are about 85% water.  Okaaaay …. 15% of one carrot is still a lot of carrot to fit into one teeny pill, not to mention the 20+ other veggies that need to be added!  Their web page gives a little more info;

“Think of an orange. An orange represents one serving. Once the orange has been flash dried and ground into powder, it will be in the volume of about 1 teaspoon. Everything is there except the water and the air. Perhaps a fraction of this teaspoon would be found in a daily dosage of Fruits.”

Did you get that last sentence? Once an orange (or, whatever) is dried out, and ground into powder, you’re getting a “fraction” of what’s left over.

In other words, it doesn’t matter if they dehydrate a billion pounds of veggies and turn it into fairy dust.  What YOU get is whatever fits into that teeny tiny capsule.  And how big, in weight, is that capsule?  It’s right on their label …..

2.4 grams

That’s less than 8/10ths of one ounce (specifically, 0.084 ounces).

They want you to take 3 pills a day.  That’s a quarter of one ounce of veggies. (They want you to believe that a quarter of an ounce of powder is the same as 10 servings of actual food.)   The entire bottle of 90 capsules weighs a mere 7.7 ounces.

Regular customers pay $90 PER bottle …. for 7.7 ounces of powdered vegetable.

So, if you are married with two children, you will be paying $360 for 30 ounces of dried powdered vegetable and fruits.

If this isn’t the definition of insanity, then I don’t know what is.

A COMPANY WITH A VERY BAD REPUTATION

The National Advertising Division has referred Balance of Nature’s internet advertising to the FTC after the company failed to respond to the group’s inquiry despite repeated attempts to engage the company in the self-regulatory process. Claims at issue mirror those that comprise the following ad alert, published nearly a year ago, including the implied claims that the health benefits in a serving of Balance of Nature are equivalent to 10 servings of real fruits and vegetables and that Balance of Nature prevents cancer.”  —— more info  here.

And to top it all off ….

BALANCE OF NATURE GETS A BIG FAT “F’ RATING FROM THE BBB

CONCLUSION

BoN sells false hope in a capsule and at an enormous cost to you — in both your wallet and shattered emotions (when you discover you were sold snake oil promises).

Here is the simple truth:  taking a fruit and vegetable pill  is NOT the same as eating actual fresh produce. BoN wants to trick you into believing their lie that pills are equivalent to real food. It is anything but. Please, don’t fall for it.

“The key question is whether a purified phytochemical has the same health benefit as does the whole food or mixture of foods in which the phytochemical is present . . . We propose that the additive and synergistic effects of phytochemicals in fruit and vegetables are responsible for their potent antioxidant and anticancer activities, and that the benefit of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables is attributed to the complex mixture of phytochemicals present in WHOLE FOODS [emphasis added].”  —-– read more here.

Here is the ultimate simple truth.

— EAT JUST ONE APPLE (or, any other fruit) and you’ll be far better off than taking a fruit pill.

— EAT JUST A FEW FLORETS OF BROCCOLI and you’ll be far far better off than taking a veggie pill.

And you’ll also have a lot more money in your pocket.

God Bless.

You’re correct, John. And as I’ve said before, you have to eat, so try to eat healthy so you spend you money there instead of on costly health care later for problems that could possibly be avoided.

Should be classified as a SIN! Ignore the required “testimonials” tat are all are pure lies. Sad that so many innocent folks can be ripped off by this organization. It is virtually impossible to eat each listed every day. There are 7 equivelent heath supplements listed in independent studies. A supplement is purely a supplement. In addition to ur daily diet. The fact that u think people should have a produce truck back up & fill ur home& with all ur authority remarks is proposterious. Have u had anyone or any facilty truly analyze the basis of ur claims? Does it make any sense than you need to eat an unnatural amount of anything for adequate or even optimal nutrition? A variety of natural foods including fruits and vegetables is the only way. You can’t put that in a pill. I studied biochemistry long enough to know that science doesn’t know shit about nutrition, just the major metabolic pathways.

You don’t think that there’s a responsibility on the part of the person buying this stuff to stop and ask “what possible benefit could anyone derive from taking fresh vegetables and then processing them into pill form?”

Seems almost pointless helping people who can’t figure out the most basic aspects of human nutrition.

The first thing I did when I heard their ad on the radio was to go to this website and sure enough it is all BS. How can a company sell this legally? I guess if you want to screw the public and make a lot of money say you have a pill GUARANTEED to cure Lung and Breast Cancer no matter what stage you are in and sell a little sugar capsule for $ 250 a bottle of 30. Take one a day and in 30 days you are cured. You could make a million dollars practically over night.

Uhm, if you boil maple syrup down further, you get maple sugar. This is just a powdered version of that.. like confectioners’ sugar (CS has a bit of corn starch to prevent clumping). I would have no issues buying this product if I had a particular use for it.

That said, Stucky’s rant is certainly valid, but he might do better handing out leaflets at the Senior Center since I don’t think most TBPers are so naive as to not check out nutritional or medicinal claims.

When my best friend was dying of breast cancer and I raged, raged, raged against the dying of the light, I latched onto the idea that because our bodies lack certain key minerals no longer found in our soils, she needed the right minerals to kickstart her immune system and enable her body to get rid of all that nasty cancer stuff.

I found and purchased several canisters of Zeolite powdered clay, frantically clutching the idea that eating, drinking or roto-rooting this clay would help my childhood friend live to see her children grow up.

My dear friend thanked me profusely, promising to use it and see if it helped. A month later, she assured me she thought it helped and was going to keep on using it. I bought another 50 dollar canister and had it sent to her. That went on for several months.

After her funeral, I helped with cleanup after the memorial. When putting some towels away, I discovered three unopened canisters of Zeolite clay in her personal closet. I laughed and laughed, then I cried and cried, realizing how many times she had enthusiastically thanked me for loving her enough to send her that clay.

Anyway, I don’t know if they are still in the healthquackery business, but Zeolite promised to cure just about anything as well.

And, do you know what? It probably can cure just about anything for a day or so if you want it to hard enough, clutching frantically to the preposterous notion that if I just eat this and say the correct number of our fathers, then it will all be okay.

You are in my prayers.

That label reads like a V8 label except there’s actual food value in a V8. Better off eating the actual food products. I suffer from two auto immune diseases, there is no cure available and the drugs are becoming ineffective and the drug side effects are worse than the diseases. I sympathize with you and understand your frustrations and need for doing the research. I also there.

I’ve improved my diet, gone heavy into plant foods and avoidance of processed and GMO foods. I’m doing better but still suffer. Keep the faith and don’t give up. I’ve almost lost faith in modern medicine, I took myself off most of the drugs and I don’t spend much time with doctors since they only seem to want to turn me into a guinea pig for some really hideously expensive and mostly ineffective drugs. I do recommend doing some food and chemical allergy blood testing, check lead and other heavy metal levels and see what that says.
Best wishes.

This company sounds a lot like other infamous multi-level marketing enterprises. They subscribe to the philosophy of P. T. Barnum.

Unless they supplement, vegans are B-12 deficient. B-12 deficiency is strongly implicated in mental illness. Off-topic, but so is toxoplasmosis, and since cats are vectors for that, there is reason to believe that the “crazy cat lady” is a real thing.

“Nodding Off-The Science of Sleep from Cradle to Grave”, new release by Alice Gregory, in the chapter “It’s a Long Hard Night” suggests possible linkages between irregular sleep habits and a host of ailments, including Alzheimer’s.

In particular: poor sleep habits may associate with “age-related deterioration of the central nervous system”.

Also, more “REM and deep, slow-wave sleep…..important for our physical and mental restoration”.

Wifey goes to bed early, sleeps like a log, and gets up early, often just a couple hours after I sack out. Who will live longer?

I know this isn’t exactly the right place to post this, but I don’t have a better one and this could help some of you. Bear with me.

Short story- I pulled my left ass muscle shoveling snow and it was the most brutal pain I’ve felt in a long time. At first, I felt nothing, then next morning BOOM! pain so bad, I couldn’t move, couldn’t sit, couldn’t stand, couldn’t get out of bed. Epsom salt baths, hot showers, IcyHot, massages, bed rest, stretching, etc all failed to make a dent in this. I needed Ibuprofen PM sleeping pills to get rest a few nights. This lasted 4 days with absolutely no change.

I got some friends who are into indoor gardening/hydroponics. One of them showed me his growlights a while back and I was fascinated they were red and blue. Some research accidentally led me down the rabbit hole to some interesting articles about medical benefits of, essentially, growlights. Some folks respond well to red and blue LED lights. Apparently, surface injuries respond well to shorter wavelengths of blue light, while deeper tissue damage responds to red light. Growlights are, essentially, great for growing people, as well as plants.

When I realized I had a growlight of my own mounted on a MiracleGro Aerogarden (tabletop hydroponics), I busted it out, reversed the light on it, laid my sorry white ass under it Saturday evening, and Sunday I woke up with most of my muscle pain gone, able to walk normally. I did it Sunday, too. I’m about 90-100% now. I do not believe, based on the pain I had Saturday, Sunday would have been any different, had I not used the growlights. I believe this stuff works.

I know some of you are dealing with chronic pain and soreness. Please consider researching this issue for yourself and going online to find a growlight with either red or blue or red and blue LEDs. Don’t go nuts and pay 300$ for a medical one from a snakeoil salesman when you can get equal, or better, results with a $20-30 growlight off Ebay. All I did was lay under it for several 30 minute blocks and I actually passed out under it reading a book for an hour, or two. Next day, I was good to go.

Hardscrabble, I know you’re especially wrecked right now. My wish is this therapy might help in some small way, if you’re willing to try something outside the box. I don’t think it would interfere with your professional medical treatment and recovery. If nothing else, maybe there’s a great placebo effect? I thought of you when I experienced my rapid healing and I wanted to share this with you as a possible aid in your recovery.

I actually put my 75 watt grow light on a portable cord and hung it over an end table and shined it on my lower back for a half hour. It was really weird. I “felt” a warm sensation in my muscle and bone, but my skin wasn’t hot.

So, then, my husband fell asleep on the couch and I shined the light on his ass for a half hour as a “control.” He doesn’t know I did it.

I’ll shine my ass again before bed and try to zap him while he’s asleep some more. Haha.

P.S. We take our Pyr to the vet for laser treatments on his knees and hips. It is AMAZING the difference it makes. I think this “grow light” treatment is along the same line… I asked the vet how come she can’t treat me?

I hope it works for you as well as it did for me. It was like a miracle when I woke up with practically no pain the next day. Anything sold like herbs, spices, veggie-and-fruit capsules must have that disclaimer saying they don’t cure anything on their labels. It’s required by law. No researcher, university, hospital, etc, is going to spend money researching something they can’t patent, so don’t expect any studies to show whether something like this is effective or not.

I take an organic whole-veg multivitamin with added Vit D., Vit B-12 and Vit B-6 to supplement daily vitamin and nutritional levels. But it’s only a supplement and they don’t claim it cures you of anything. They also have the mandated disclaimer on the bottle.

FWIW Stuck , a daily dose of Turmeric couldn’t hurt .

A study conducted at UCLA found that curcumin may help the macrophages to clear the amyloid plaques found in Alzheimer’s disease. Macrophages play an important role in the immune system. They help the body to fight against foreign proteins and then effectively clear them. Curcumin was treated with macrophages in blood taken from nine volunteers: six AD patients and three healthy controls. Beta amyloid was then introduced. The AD patients, whose macrophages were treated with curcumin, when compared with patients whose macrophages were not treated with curcumin, showed an improved uptake and ingestion of the plaques. Thus, curcumin may support the immune system to clear the amyloid protein.[11]

And then there’s this. Who’d thunk that getting stoned might protect one’s cognitive function. SSS would be verklempt.

The Effects of Medical Marijuana on Alzheimer’s Prevention

A preclinical study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that very small doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a chemical found in marijuana, can slow the production of beta-amyloid proteins, thought to be a hallmark characteristic and key contributor to the progression of Alzheimer’s.

The study, published in 2014, is among others to support the effectiveness of THC in prohibiting the growth of toxic amyloid plagues.

Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants (esters) which are volatile and are lost in the drying process. Nothing compares to the real thing. The GMO soy they make their veggie caps with are poisons. The heavy metals concentrated from the extraction process are poison. Just grab a nice assortment of veggies from your non pesticide garden or organic farm stand and run them through a high power blender. Drink the result. A lot cheaper and better for you.

I am sorry for anyone who is dealing with cognitive decline, whether personally or through a loved one. It is such a painful, frustrating situation! I have read a lot of information on this and sadly I have come to the conclusion that in spite of developments which have been PROVEN to improve cognitive ability substantially, there are those with enough power who wish to deny us access to it. The monopolies of the 1900’s appear unsophisticated in comparison to the “corporations” of today. The ultraRICH of today have power unheard of in the history of the world and they use it to THEIR benefit. The cure for cancer was found in the last 100 years but the man who discovered the cure (through vibrations) died penniless and his research stolen. How often have we heard THAT story?! I honestly believe there IS a way to reverse the plaque buildup in the brain because I have read about it. I remember the results were just incredible-on laboratory animals as well as human subjects. It reversed the cognitive degeneration by completely breaking down the tendrils of plaque which cause Alzheimers. Perhaps if you can afford it, look into treatment in foreign countries?

Just saw this from a link on Drudge: “New drug raises hopes of reversing memory loss in old age..

Toronto researchers believe the drug can also help those with depression, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s

“In the latest work, the Toronto team showed that brain cells which had shrunk in older mice grew back after two months of having the drug put in their drinking water. “We can actually grow the brain cells,” Sibille said…

The new drug is a derivative of benzodiazepine, a family of medicines that includes the anti-anxiety pills Valium and Xanax. While Valium and Xanax have broad effects in the brain, the new drug is designed to target specific GABA “receptors” found on neurons in key parts of the brain, such as the hippocampus, which are heavily involved in cognition.”

I don’t know what to think of this because it took me 18 months to wean off of a benzo I took for insomnia. I was reading the printout they give you at the pharmacy and it said benzos can cause memory loss. They are highly addictive and cause terrible withdrawal symptoms.

But I thought I would share it with you anyway.

Glad to see somebody taking that Balance O’ Nature scam down a peg. But one reason why such scams thrive is…..uhh….have you ever sat down and listened to a random afternoon or evening’s worth of radio ads? Talk radio, music radio, sports radio – doesn’t matter. Radio is the last fortress of snake oil still standing. You may find tv and print ads annoying in the extreme – I do as well – but on the Dishonesty Meter, they’re not even in the same zip code as radio! Quack health cures, fake Viagra, every kind of come-on for gambling sites that stress only the fun of winning…..radio is such a toilet of sketchy advertisers, you’ll say a silent prayer of thanks for Flo and her car-insurance ads.

I really find this terrific and am continually stunned when I hear the endless barrage of BoN commercials on the radio. I mean, 3-4 a break. The “customers” (wink wink) are so over the top and lousy voice actors, on top of it. In fact I recognize many as doing other commercials because they have distinctive voices. So then…why are they still selling their crap? I’ve seen articles about the BBB or FCC or FTC or FDA cracking down on lesser bogus sellers. There is even recent discussion about regulating vitamins and preventing them from being sold OTC because people “abuse” them or have had reactions or, in studies, most were found to have bogus claims or be made of sawdust and powdered milk. How is BoN any different with this garbage?

Love your article, just found the site. Suggest you stop using ! after sentences. It’s not the National Enquirer, it’s not some 16 year old’s blog. If it’s to be taken as “reporting” and work, which it is, it just seems more adult and factually, intelligently presented without the drama. When you read it, you yourself go “!” , that’s the process of thinking about what you’re reading. Sez me anyway.
