LLPOH wrote a most interesting article about how Europe has changed so much in his most recent visit to the way it was years ago that it got me to thinking about how America has changed. Specifically, what would happen if I were able to visit the America that I grew up in, in the 1950s and 1960s.
I was perusing some old videos on YouTube and came upon a set of videos about the New York World’s Fair of 1964 and 1965. I was twelve years old and living on Long Island at the time and I visited the fair at least a dozen or more times in its two years of existence.
The World’s Fair video that I found the most interesting was a copy of an NBC documentary hosted by the late Edwin Newman that for YouTube posting was done in six parts. Its original showing on NBC in 1964 was just a single one-hour program.
Edwin Newman got quite a bit of criticism in the YouTube comments for being such a downer and a stick-in-the-mud, but the fact that he wasn’t hyping the fair like all of the other videos that I found is the reason that I found it the most useful to my purpose.
I watched these videos of thousands of people all rushing into and mingling at that fair without a single confrontation among them and asked myself if that would be possible in today’s America. There were long lines to get into the fair, lines at the pavilions, lines at the food courts (identified by the multi-bubble balloon looking things on top), people rushing together under cover when it rained, and everyone was pleasant to each other and very well mannered. Newman even commented on it at the nine minute mark in part four of the YouTube listing.
The first time or two that I went to the 64-65 NY World’s Fair was with my family. All of the rest of times I went with friends. Somebody’s mom or dad would drop us off early in the morning at the train station – The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) – and we would take the train to the Woodside Station and then head upstairs to get the EL (Elevated Line).
Since we were just kids and never had much money, we figured out quickly that rather than take the LIRR to the Jamaica Station and waiting for the LIRR train to take us the rest of the way to the fair it was faster and cheaper to go to Woodside and pick up the EL. It was only ten or fifteen cents. Much cheaper and faster than the LIRR.
Whether it was just my best friend Donnie and I or whether we had a station wagon load of friends, we would go off to the fair on our own, spend the whole day, even to the fireworks at night before heading home tired and foot weary without every worrying about our safety.
After getting back to Baldwin Station we would call somebody’s dad (we had to save ten cents for the phone call) to come and pick us up. Fortunately just about everybody’s mom or dad had a station wagon. Sometimes we filled it.
When I look through videos of fairs and events or Disney World videos today I find fistfights, muggings, pickpockets, assaults of all sorts captured and posted by bystanders. I also see people almost morbidly obese as the norm. I didn’t see any of those things in the old 64-65 World’s Fair footage and don???t remember seeing any of it in my visits.
It’s not just Europe that has changed. The world has changed, and not all for the better. We have so many wonderful new inventions and luxuries, but people have devolved towards a kind of barbarism towards each other. If we were to visit a fair such as the one in 1964-1965 today we would be gate-raped by the blue-gloved perverts on the way in, subjected to every humiliation, and be fearful of rape, robbery, muggings, and beatings. Twelve year olds probably wouldn’t even be safe to take the train alone today before they even got to the fair.
How did this happen? When and why did we as a people change? Where are we headed?

I was recently out with my 13 year old grandson. An older women of I would say 80 started a conversation with me. She told me she had a 13 year old grandson also. Then she looked at me and said. Our grandchildren have no idea what they missed in America. I often give thanks for having grown up in that time,and never miss a chance to remind those that missed it.Just what they missed. Even still when someone is born here it like winning the lottery. It is sad why s many hate it….
Exactly how does an 80 yo woman have a 13 yo grandson? Her son or daughter would be 60 or so. Only movie stars wait until they’re 45 to start having kids. By that time, the vagina walls are so weakened by a constant barrage of dick that she has to stay in bed the entire pregnancy.

If my youngest has a kid at 36, by the time that kid is 13, I’ll be 90.

BTW – your comment about “keeping on topic” will no doubt prove successful. (sarcasm off). It is one of the both great and vexing things about TBP – comment threads morph so fast and vary so wildly that any effort to keep the threads on topic is a waste of time. There is a famous thread that started out about something I now forget, which morphed quickly into people talking about bat guano, which I will never forget. It simply would not be TBP if people stay on topic.

Steve, nice post. I too grew up in that merika and I have been thinking about this a lot over the past five years as I work out how the plot is going to develop in a book I am working on. I personally have come to the conclusion that it is in fact one certain group of people who seek to rule the world under communism. They invented communism. They have communes (which might be the only ones left in the world), and they promote it all day every day in every way they can. They use capitalism to build up the funds that they use to promote communism.
They are the ones who have suggested that black babies be eliminated through abortion. They are the ones who started planned parenthood. They are the ones who drove the banks into insolvency and they are the ones who handed out hundreds of billions in free money to their buddies. They then took that free money and paid themselves a handsome bonus and bought the entire stock market.
They need to breed down the intelligence of the citizenry and they need to dumb down the academy. It is the only thing that can keep the rabble at bay once the jig is up on their criminal conspiracies. So they work diligently to import low IQ humans into high IQ civilizations breading a race of both physically stronger and stupider workers that will demand little and do their bidding. But these low IQ humans are not stable. They kill each other and occasionally they kill some of the chosen and they can’t have that so they have to create the death squads. You can call them police if you like but they are not the police. They are the enforcement arm for the communists and you have seen them in every communist country for over 100 years. You see them in the brown shirts, the black shirts, the black block, Antifa. They are violent thugs who chose to attack rather than to stand under the shelter in a rainstorm and talk pleasantly with their new friends. They don’t want new friends. They want to usher in the new communist utopia on a wave of batons and guns.
So you ask what has changed. I would suggest that what has changed is that European and mostly British people with a long standing belief in a world made just by the law have been replace by a people who believe that the law is a thing that is meant to serve them, and them alone. If a law does not serve them then they will change it so it does. The rights that you thought were inalienable, were in fact just gifts from your overlords. Your new overlords don’t think that they want you to have these gifts so they took them away.
At least that’s the conclusion that I have come to. I would love to see someone prove me wrong as I hate it just as much as you do.

Stay on topic beaner baby. How has merika changed for you? Well, you would have a hard time with that wouldn’t you. You haven’t been here all that long and for most of that time you have been sucking off the tit of the tax payer. So for you, actually, nothing has changed. It’s all good.
Some data points re 1960 that goes a long way to explaining this:
1) there were around 180 million people in the US in 1964. Today it is close to 350 million. That is a catastrophic increase, and is bad in too many ways to count.
2) In 1960, the US was 85% white, 3% Hispanic and 10% black. Today the US is approx. 64% European white, 18% Hispanic, and 13% black.
Good luck with that trend.
You left out the Asians, Indians, Middle Easterners and sub-Saharan Africans. There’s got to be close to 20% all together by now. There aren’t anywhere close to 64% European descended Americans left. Maybe 50% tops.
But, but, they tell us that diversity is our strength. People should be even nicer and more honest now than we were years ago…
64+18+13 = 95%. So the balance is in the neighborhood of 5%. Asians and Indians are probably around that total – quick search says around 6% Asians total, and 1% Indians. Africans count as black I believe. Middle easterners are counted white, I suspect, and there is around 1% Muslims in the US.
So, using these figures, 100 – 18 Hispanic, – 13 black, – 6 Asian, – 1 Indian, – 1 Muslim = 61% white.
That will be pretty close. Whites are not yet down to 50%, but the day is coming. And fast.

Like 9/11 my perceptions tell a different story than the official narrative. There are far more than 1% Islamics and Indians (sub continent) in this country and at least as many Asians in the USA now as there are African Americans. And the 13% Black figure has been that number my entire life and since 1965 the African floodgates have opened up, much more since ’92, no way that all those additional Africans haven’t added so much as 1%.
The stats say one thing but my eyes see another, like that bullshit 11 million illegals number that hasn’t changed at all in 20 years. There’s at least 50 million illegals here- which is why they desperately do not want the Census to count them.

Random thoughts of things that changed our world…in my humble opinion. Been discussed here before.
-financial struggles from the decreasing purchasing power of the money; (Just Ate showed a pic)
it forced many families to require dual incomes of both parents; Day care for kids became acceptable.
Too many parents spent far too little time teaching children right from wrong.
-Single parent households grew exponentially. Too many kids having no father to discipline correctly.
-abandonment of the religion’s good teachings of respecting the Golden Rule.
More simply, far too many people put false gods ahead of Him, as their priorities.
Most typically, Greed, Materialistic things, and passions.
-drugs became easily available and many chose poorly and became regular users;
-The explosive growth of television and movies’ negative effects; in too many ways to count.
Marketing via mass broadcast subconsciously and subliminally swayed minds, (tobacco, alcohol)
Kids became less physically active and desired garbage foods that were advertised;
The comedies taught put downs and insults would win popularity and laughs, so mean people thrived.
Sex sells, and trillions bought into it. Freedom? Yes, but a wide range of problems ensued. (Just ate pic)
Violence and murder slowly became more and more prominent in screenplays. Loss of shock value.
Selling the grandeur of lifestyles of the rich and shameless brought keeping up w/ the Joneses.
Diversity broke up neighborhoods; Pop culture drove divisions in many families.
Racial tension problems were never solved; it’s now fostered and kindled more than ever, for gain.
Flagrant abuse of power and injustice by law enforcement created division and disrespect.

Public schools have morphed into PC indoctrination and fostered in victim mentality as a bill of rights,
where now reparations and restitution is believed to be owed.
Corruption at all levels of business, government, religion, in courts and law taught people that doing the right thing was for losers. Crime unpunished pays; so the working stiff was seen by many as a fool.
I could go on, but will stop it here, with one final thought.
Far too many people take far too many things and other people in our lives for granted.
Our standard of living is still far higher than a great percentage of the world’s population.
We have everything the rich have, and it still isn’t enough to make us appreciate the gifts we have on loan.
I try to stop and focus on those, when I’m in the right frame of mind. With Gratitude.
Food, clothing, shelter, reasonably good health, or the care available to restore it.
Family and friends.
Most are able bodied for most of their lives, yet we grumble.
If the invalid can make a go of life, WTF are we bitching about? There’s problems aplenty, for sure.
But, where’s your focus?
Seize the day, and do it with a smile. Give one out, as often as possible.
It’s one small gesture, to push back a bit, against a world gone mad.

Thinking about the root cause of the problem from my POV, it was and still is the mainstreaming of biological and cosmological evolution in .gov indoctrination centers that has removed accountability to ones Creator from the equation. Very simply put, if I am taught that I am nothing more than an accidental insignificant animal with a big brain hurtling through near infinite space on a tiny fragile ball, I am going to behave like the same animal thinking only of my own survival (what benefits me? only live once…); a very dangerous selfish thing.

What you write = what’s in my memories too. This is what was but seems no longer is. I think a lot of it has to do with:
1) Loss of stay at home parent, family unit, social bonding,
2) Isolation of people via modern communications options,
3) Loss of interest in religion, philosophy,
4) The rise of the perceived importance of Personality at the expense of Character.
I’m sure there are more reasons.
Easy divorce, women in the workforce (putting off family, sexual politics, increase of infidelity), birth control (putting off family formation even if married) and the social nuke, abortion.
Once you’ve done that kind of damage to women, children and families, there’s no coming back.

The Hippie era gave us, “If it feels good, do it!” In today’s world, add, “…no matter how stupid and harmful it is.”
I too remember the local general store with the squeaky wooden floors and all the items just placed loosely in bins. Toys, fishing weights (sinkers), small and easily pocketed items of every sort that would seem strange today. Just imagine the flash mob looters in such a place.
When I was going through all the old videos after reading LLPOH’s article, what really hit me was Edwin Newman’s remarks about how everyone was behaving at the fair. I referenced it in my article. It is at the nine-minute mark of the second video.
His comments really brought home to me that we as a people have lost something that was very special, something very precious. I mulled it around for a while before writing the essay. Like the death of a loved one, it is a world that is gone, never to be seen again. Always alive in our memories, but no longer of this world.
It’s more than just the lost innocence of youth. Mine are not just the reflections of a man that understands that I have more years behind me than I have in front of me. It’s something that is lost or more probably stolen from us and done with our own consent and participation.
I was hoping to get some thoughts from fellow TBP’ers on how this has happened, why it has happened, and where we are headed. What kind of people will we be?

Ah, that takes me back! Nice article about the 64-65 World’s Fair my friend. I grew up in nearby Forest Hills and used to play with my friends around the fairgrounds and Flushing Meadows Lakes area in the early 70’s. By then only the Hall of Science was still open ..barely. In fact a cop probably saved my life there one winter day when a friend and myself foolishly were trying to walk across the frozen lake when it was already starting to thaw & crack. Thanks for the memories!
