An Offer You Can’t Refuse

By Doug “Uncola” Lynn via TheBurningPlatform.com

We read to know we’re not alone.

Although that particular truism is often mistakenly attributed to the author C.S. Lewis, it was actually William Nicholson who wrote those words in his 1989 play “Shadowlands”, a story about C.S. Lewis.

Indeed. The power of words. And perhaps many of us out here in the interwebic blogosphere write to know we’re not alone as well.

Especially during times like these.

We use words to comfort and curse, to encourage, to promise, to teach, buy, sell, debate, learn, manipulate, lie, share, seduce, pray, preach, promote, warn, and even survive.

In the aforementioned play, “Shadowlands“, there is another quote that many now reading this may also find relevant to our times:

….pain is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world. Why must it be pain? Why can’t he rouse us more gently, with violins or laughter? Because the dream from which we must be wakened, is the dream that all is well.

No, Dear Reader, all is not well.  But it never has been in this corrupt world; or, at least, very well for very long. Everything turns. And whether or not any megaphonic pain originates from God or the devil is beside the point.  The truth remains: life is suffering and it’s been that way from the time of man’s first moans.

To be sure, ever since earth’s original family settled east of Eden it’s been a dog-eat-dog world where only the strong, and smart, survived. Truly, it wasn’t peoplekind’s opposable thumbs alone that placed them at the top of the animal kingdom’s food chain – it was their ability to think. Or, rather, the mind’s ability to choose. To decide. To improve. All of these derived from the silver lining of free will.

And, undeniably, those who have decided best, have lived best.  This is very important to understand, especially now.  Because the times are about to become more extreme than most people currently realize; even to the point to where split-second decisions will determine who lives and who dies.

Since starting my blog over three years ago, I’ve attempted to tell the truth to the best of my ability.  I’ve done so, of course, at my own expense measured primarily by time spent subtracted from zero financial gain – and to the tune of well over 300,000 words so far.

What I’ve gained from my blogging experience, fortunately, has been the ability to remain sane during these crazy times as well as the beneficial, even priceless, perspectives of various online “friends”.

Yes, even in the rough-and-tumble digital world of the free internet: We read to know we’re not alone.

Experience is a brutal teacher, but you learn fast.

– Nicholson, William. (1989). “Shadowlands”.

Certainly, all of this was on my mind while I read the latest book written by a fellow blogger, and my online friend, Robert Gore of StraightLineLogic.com.  Gore’s most recent book is “Everything I Know About Business I Learned From the Godfather”.  Therein, Gore’s personal life and business experiences are paired to the now iconic fictional characters that were first imagined by Mario Puzo, the author who wrote the original Godfather novel in 1969.  And, undoubtedly, in the opinion of this blogger, Gore’s latest effort has resulted in some very keen insights that are quite relevant to our times.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I first met Robert in the commentary of some long-forgotten article more than three years ago. Regardless of the exact date, it was in the months preceding the advent of my own blog. Gore had posted his website and after a few clicks, I could see we were like-minded.  I appreciated his site’s tagline of “never underestimate the power of a question” and I, especially, enjoyed a review he had written there of Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn“, if you can believe that.

Since then, Robert and I have had discussions in both the commentaries of articles and emails discussing politics, post-apocalyptical potentialities, books, and authors including the previously mentioned Puzo and Twain as well as other writers such as Cormac McCarthy and Ayn Rand.  In one of my recent emails to Robert, I congratulated him on his latest book and for writing on such a compelling topic.  I also mentioned how my own priorities have shifted away from reading fiction, but that I do enjoy books like (at the time) what I perceived his “Godfather” might be – because, more often than not, I will pick up valuable insights that are beneficial to life, business, and even survival.

As of this writing Robert did not know I had finished his book or that I decided to casually review it in this post. Nor did he ask me to promote the book in any manner whatsoever.

That all said, let me just say this (and in spite of any worldview and/or friendship bias I may have): Gore’s “Godfather”  is very good.

Original at its core, the book is part self-help, part autobiography, part social commentary, and is often even confessional in nature.  It is at once abysmally honest yet imbued with a sort of optimistic nobility at the same time; if only because telling the truth in a world of lies is honorable by any definition.

In “Godfather’s” second chapter entitled “Respect”, Gore forthrightly skewers the values of postmodern America and today’s self-deluded who will soon understand the full weight of reality’s pain:

As with the media, Hollywood, sports, and academia have become bastions of proper-think and proper-speak given over to indoctrination and reform of the reactionary and benighted. Once upon a time, celebrities and professors were almost universally admired. Now a good many of them are best-case ignored, worst-case despised by those of us who don’t play at games or do make-believe for a living.

– Gore, Robert. (2019). “Everything I Know About Business I Learned From the Godfather”, SLL Press, September 2019, Pgs 18-19.

Chapter three reads as a challenge for honest men and women to face reality, rather than succumb to the emotionalism that has become so fashionable throughout Western civilization today:

Emotional repression was not just something men did because of bad parenting or because all the other men were doing it. They did it because reality demanded it. Hundreds of generations later, reality still demands that those engaged in designing microchips, finding a cure for cancer, or any of the other endeavors that spell human progress put their emotions aside and fully engage their rationality and logic. Displays of emotion meet with reality’s disdain.

– Gore, “…Godfather”, pg 28

For some time now, I’ve debated my liberal friends regarding their faith in government and their antiquated views on big business – of which they mistakenly consider as the exclusive realm of Republican politics. “But Wall Street is not Main Street”, I tell them, “Corporatism is the new Collectivism, Silicon Valley is Big Brother, and Human Resource Departments are Orwell’s new Room 101.  Can’t you see?”

In “Godfather” chapter six, Gore framed it as follows:

At a conference I attended, an executive claimed her poultry processing company befriended its chickens. Lighting, heating and all other living conditions were continuously adjusted to keep the birds happy, she gushed. Happier poultry may be better tasting poultry, but in the end they still kill the chickens. When business tells you it’s your friend, that it cares for you and your happiness, keep those chickens in mind.

– Gore, “…Godfather”, Pgs 68-69

There are countless ways to tell America’s story because there are so many narrative arcs by which history can be told.

When I first read Mario Puzo’s Godfather as a young man, I found it to be an eloquently written multi-generational saga providing fascinating insights into the underworld, family relations, and violent behind-the-scenes power struggles in New York City, Las Vegas, and Hollywood.

The first two Godfather films, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and released in 1972 and 1974, respectively, are still widely considered as two of the best movies ever made.  Their overall production, cinematography, scripting, cast, and dynamic on-screen portrayals performed by the some of the best actors in the history of Hollywood, near-perfectly translated Mario Puzo’s words onto the big screen.

Paradoxically, in his book, Gore also accurately illustrates how the original Godfather novel and movies so precisely depicted the seedy underbelly of Tinseltown – the soulless vacuity of its stars and starlets, its epic immorality, and the endless supply of enormously elephantine egos. Still, even today, Hollywood presumes to condescendingly preach its particular brand of voodoo to average Americans of whom it considers as mere plebeians.

Accordingly, in chapter seven of “Godfather”, Gore isn’t tolerating any of that:

The glitterati adopt another moral balm: collectivist politics. Stealing and spending other people’s money for your causes and beneficiaries is more virtuous than spending your own. Anyone who resists such theft is immoral. These are simple formulations, the only kind most stars can understand. Within their own crowd they confer admiration without accomplishment. Everyone else gets cloying righteousness, self-satisfied superiority, and sneering contempt as the great unwashed.

– Gore, “…Godfather”, Pg 84.

Later Gore identifies the “organized crime syndicate with the most muscle” and casually compares the bountiful bread baskets that were once the nations of Sicily and America centuries ago, but were, over time, ravaged by greedy men spouting “euphemisms and other linguistic sleight-of-hand“:

Crime is a lot easier when the victims don’t realize they’re victims. The government and the Mafia are parasites, living off the work of those who honestly produce. Linguistic contortions are designed to obscure that fact from parasites and victims alike. Like other parasites, organized crime and governments weaken and often kill the hosts.

– Gore, “…Godfather”,  Pgs 127-128.

In spite of its realism, and the naked honesty of its final chapters, “Everything I Know About Business I Learned From the Godfather” is not a doom and gloom book. Nor does it glorify the Machiavellian machinations of the underworld. On the contrary, it is an offering whereby the author’s intelligence, and humanity, shine through so as to illuminate better pathways for living.

In fact, if Gore’s “Godfather” was assigned as required reading for educational business courses then, perhaps, those graduating would possess more profitable practical perspectives from which to benefit their own lives – and, in turn, society at large.

It’s an offer we can’t refuse.

It was a fun screen to look through at your business advice. Like I said, I still think GF 3 is worth a revisit for what happens when business loses prime focus, but I do agree it has less appeal than 1&2.

I am glad Unc reviewed it. My interest in bond interest is limited.

Hope my review posted.

@ Robert,

Yessir. As you can tell, I enjoyed the book. But even more, I’m glad to call its author “friend”.

And, by the way, once you hit the NYT’s Best Seller List and your other venture capital project launches worldwide, I wouldn’t mind a ride on your yacht. But since I’m over here in the boondocks, your pilot will need to pick me up in the helicopter first on the way to your jet.

Just have anyone from your entourage reach me over at my blog. ??

Yes, even in the rough-and-tumble digital world of the free internet: We read to know we’re not alone.

The family that I have found here on TBP comes from the discovery that we don’t share our thoughts here because we think they will change the minds of people that think differently than we do.

We share our thoughts here to show others here that they are not alone.

TBP is ‘big’ family…

Forgive me for hijacking the thread to share this thought. It is from a message I sent to my two Senators. Enjoy, please do the same with your Senators. This country is in deep shit. Chip…

To any informed citizen it is abundantly clear that our country has entered an existential constitutional crisis. If current political trends continue the country will be RULED by a single party. Notice I chose the word RULED because we will no longer be CITIZENS, we will be SUBJECTS. Every day we see that the single party in charge (and the only party fighting day in and day out) are the Socialist Democrats and their propaganda puppets in the Main Stream Media. The Socialist Democrats are using EVERY trick in the book both ethical and unethical to stop President Trump from implementing his agenda, an agenda that sixty-five million patriotic Americans voted for.

Over the past half century, progressives (socialists) have taken over every institution in America including all levels of education, government, the news media, and the entertainment industry. Social conditioning from these institutions (propaganda) has brainwashed an entire generation (perhaps two) into believing that America is/was evil as founded. Further, they have so divided the country through political correctness and their social justice agenda that public dialog between citizens (or politicians) of differing opinions is no longer possible. How does a free country continue to exist under such circumstances?

The political left and their willing accomplices in the main stream media (and increasingly the internet) are trying to shame and silence conservative patriotic voices and eliminate them from the public square. True to Orwell’s 1984, truth, facts, and reason are the enemy. Social justice “feelings” rule the day and are the only “facts” that mater. The theory of man made “climate change” is a great example as President Obama famously said, “The science is settled”. How does a constitutional lawyer make such a bold “scientific” determination? Well no Mr. President, actually, the science is NOT settled. Proof is there are more than 30,000 scientists, including over 9,000 with PhD’s, who disagree with the former President’s assertion. You can see that list here…

http://www.petitionproject.org/index.php

Consensus among “climate scientists” on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is NOT science. Because true science is never about consensus. Facts mater. Unfortunately debate on this issue among those of differing opinion is not possible. Anyone who doesn’t toe the green line is a “science denier” or worse. They are shamed out of the public square.

The recent theatrics at the UN are demonstrative of the problem. A teenage girl appeared at the UN to “shame” those who oppose Green New Deal policies that would literally, send us all back to the stone age. Was there a scientific DEBATE on climate change at the UN? No. There was a teen aged girl LECTURING and shaming world political leaders for not doing enough to “save the planet”. This was theater. The progressive left doesn’t want DEBATE because with true debate and the introduction of facts and reason they lose the argument. What the progressive left wants, as the Senator from Hawaii recently said about all men, is for us to “sit down and shut up”.

When are Conservatives collectively going to say NO, we will NOT sit down and shut up. When are we going to rally behind the ONLY choice this country currently has to eliminate our Socialist future? Donald Trump certainly isn’t perfect. He’s done many things that I agree with and many that I don’t, which could be the subject of another debate. However, I don’t see anyone in the Republican Party that has shown a willingness to fight for this country and her citizens against the collective that has been engineered to destroy this country. This is most certainly NOT about “white supremacy”, homophobia, misogyny, or xenophobia. This is about individual freedom, liberty, and limiting governments “rule” over us. Politicians are elected to SERVE not to RULE.

So I ask you Republican Senators and Congressmen, when are you going to stand up and FIGHT? When are you going to give socialist democrats as much grief as they are currently giving this President? When are you going to quit playing Mr. Nice Guy? The socialist democrats are manufacturing “impeachable” offenses and fighting so dirty they are exposing themselves. Their propaganda institutions in the Main Stream Media are giving them cover for now. Time for you to voice your support for the President, not run and cower like Mitt Romney.

Time for Conservatives to get dirty, get in the mud with these socialist, and fight back to save our country. The President needs to let the indictments fly for the criminal actions that have been exposed in the FBI, CIA, and DOJ and you need to support his doing so. Hold town hall rallies. Get the message out through the Main Stream Media however possible. MAKE NOISE! Fight like your freedom and your country depend on it BECAUSE THEY DO!

I wouldst that a modern day Vito reach his breaking point with the Black Hands that strong arm businessmen in order to wet their beak would meet their fate as Fanucci did in that dark hallway at his doorway, beneath the din of the festival fireworks’ noise and celebration.
From one thug to another perhaps, but when corruption reigns, dog eat dog sometimes brings relief for those who long for a fighting chance, just desserts, karma, and what goes around comes around.
Predators, protectors, favors asked, favors given, and surviving the turf wars.

@ Anon,

RE: Fireworks, dead Fanucci, & just desserts

For reasons I can’t quite exactly explain, I found your above comment to be… quite… satisfying. I’m right there with ya even though I’m not totally sure what we’re talkin’ about.

On another note: I always thought what ruined Godfather III was that Pacino’s “aged Michael” needed more of Brando’s “Vito” and less “Tony Montana”.

In other words, Michael’s progression didn’t seem genuine. Or, it could be he merely lacked Vito’s life experience and character, and, therefore, shelf-life; as it were (something Gore also touches upon in his book).

Oh yeah, and the incestuous relations in the story didn’t help the film’s popularity either.

Simply that, of the 2 characters who thrived on organized crime, Fanucci was more evil, where Vito had some semblance of honor and more respectability.
Vito played the game, but refused to be buffaloed by someone who was worse, in his humiliation and theft. The Black Hand flaunted it, much like modern people with power, unearned wealth and who use ruthless intimidation. Blackmail. Hardball. All consuming.
But the audacity of Vito’s bold, ruthless courage, although criminal, was satisfying, and the movie had most viewers tolerable of the vicious way the don dispatched his enemy.
It was a type of dog eat dog justice some modern day evil bastards deserve.
Trying to deliver it by the rule of law seems less likely, as time goes on.
Brewer, I’m not the best at getting a point across, but still like to write.
Doug, I always like reading your writing, and hope to become as polished, one day becoming bold enough to submit something. -lager

Uncola,

Seems to me that “aged Michael” was operating with a old paradigm. What had been so successful in Vito’s time and in the days as Michael came of age, had become ineffective. Fidelity, genuine respect, one’s word as a bond (in business and to adherents) and the unyielding family bonds had become passé.

His culture had been poisoned.

If Trump would be a (new) Vito, then my best to him. He certainly is standing in a swampy corridor and has an extensive array of mani nere with which to contend. This time I hope he leaves the light on.

If Vito loses this time, it’s time to go to the mattresses, probably permanently.

The media dim would roll along boisterously if only to lie that Fanucci was not dead, ‘he just left early to visit Ruth (Buzzy) Ginsburg.”

I first heard of Mr. Gore – the context excapes (sic) me now – cuz it was, like, you know, 2014/15 maybe – but it was either an “aggregated” article or an insightful comment that he posted at “The Extinction Protocol”, so I hopped the link and checked out his site. SHARP guy . . . but I swing a hammer and pull the trigger on a saw, so, well, er, i see a lot of nails and linear feet of lumber. Straight Line Logic . . . ain’t that. Them. Of course, neither is TBP, really, but then, kinda it is, too, because of the “wild wild west” quality of the knuckle-dragging text-jockies that haunt this particular saloon . . . and, there you have it, my summation of TBP . . . a dusty saloon, filled with miscreants, knockabouts, drifters, scud-bottom vagrants, dancing girls, traveling snake-oil salesmen and/or weary professionals, lawmen and outlaws, a few high-rollers but more gamblers, even a few honest men, and, sometimes, the respectable, respected, respectful, who find themselves in need of a drink. The ‘tender is in, always on, and sometimes, he serves off the top shelf.

Anyhow, my point is . . . I am intrigued by your summary/critique/shameless plug of “Godfather” – if only all “critics” were so brief AND thoughtful of . . . most of the crap on the bestseller’s pile.

Everybody else . . . drink up.

Well, Neibo, I’m pickin’ up mostly what you’re layin’ down there. Mostly. What I identified in my above article as a “casual review” would not qualify as a critique, per se. And I suppose “shameless plug” is in the eye of the beholder.

In truth, I found Gore’s Godfather references insightful, the chosen quotes out of Puzo’s book and from the movies to be poignant; and Gore’s correlations in the book to be honest and interesting overall.

Furthermore, as I stated in my piece above: Gore’s intelligence and humanity did shine through – and I admire his “learning curve” and the life choices he’s made.

Sometimes I critique my friends, sometimes I don’t. But if I were ever to critique one who wrote a book, I’d probably choose to wait until after I’d written one myself. I have not, hence my “casual review”.

And, finally, kudos to Holly O. for the excellent cover design. The minute I saw it, I knew it was her work. And it was nice to see her credited on Gore’s “Acknowledgements” page. Very cool.

Truly, we all get by with a little help from our friends; online and beyond.

True . . . to all that AND, please, understand that “shameless plug” is/was meant to be tongue-in-cheek (not like you posted links to the “buy here page” between paragraphs) . . . my point with that is that you actually make a good case . . . for buying the book WITHOUT being, er, um . . . a “shill’. I.E., what i meant to say is . . . I meant that as a compliment to you and Gore. And, deny as you might, “casual review” or not-so-casual . . . your summation is a ‘critique” . . . even if/though you are not a critic, per se, BECAUSE it is kinda/sorta “off-the-cuff” (that is, honest).

So, all caveats/explanatory verbiationarisms aside . . . it’s an informative, succinct article about a worthwhile book. Period.

And I know that because bullshitters never last long in the wild wild west.

Verbiationarism. I liked that Niebo. And for someone who swings hammers, pulls triggers on saws, and sees a lot of nails and linear feet of lumber – you’re quite a craftsman with words, too. I’m a fan. You had me at “a dusty saloon”.

RInsY, do you recall the scene where Ishmael says he wants to see the world and Peleg takes him to the pier and says, this is the world, it is all the same everywhere. If we look at other countries, there are 7 families that own most of the land and enterprises. This is also true of your country and America. You never hear of them, they make sure to stay out of the papers. Speaking of which, we have just a few media companies, they keep a tight rein on the daily narrative.

..I found counting the dead raccoons on way to work far moar interesting.

Justin was his usually self,
running his mouth
with much ado

Liz still could miss being
the crazy cat lady,
preaching doom

Max, no surprise was his usual self,
with zest lobbed the truth.
A grenade in room.

The Bloc guy that no one likes
With the Others wondering why
Hoping he’d leave soon

Andrew being the tuff guy
Still having not figured out
That Justin-lite won’t work this time

And then, In turban and all,

Jagmeet surprised even this guy
With being on that stage
The most sane that night

I just received my copy in the mail yesterday and stayed up later than usual reading last night. Very clever approach to a business style book and absolutely riveting. You must be familiar with The Godfather for it to make sense, but the lessons each example teach are quite insightful. I don’t think I had ever watched the movie in that light, but look forward to seeing it from a completely new perspective the next time I sit down to watch it again.

I also enjoyed getting some more background on Robert’s backstory, that explains a hell of a lot more than I would ever have picked up on by reading the essays he usually posts and helps fit the pieces into place. An honest man who spends any time in finance becomes, eventually, a revolutionary.

I consider myself honest, as do others who know me, and I spent time in finance, but did not become a revolutionary. All I did was quit for good at age 52, expatriate, begin writing and translating professionally, bought a few acres a bit west of the middle of nowhere in South America and build a couple of strawbale houses (one for either kid who might want to come),plant fruit trees, vegetable plots and so on, but while all this is mildly different from a life on Wall Street, it’s not revolutionary, is it? Not yet, at least.

I’m glad you’re liking it, HSF. I’ve been a revolutionary for as long as I can remember, but it took getting away from finance for it to fully emerge.

“The truth remains: life is suffering and it’s been that way from the time of man’s first moans.”

I chirp in with this thought. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Words without linguistic contorsions (and music) make it so.

Sometimes life painfully gores you and sometimes words from the *un-Gore* gives you a way to not suffer life like a schlepper.

Thanks to Robert and Doug!

Some things just get better with age.

Like the old days when the left was still full of people who put America first, and truth over political parties.

The old left had some good points and imagination.

I see no such level of creativity in today’s written critiques and political cartoons.

Don Fanucci made the same mistake that Senator Geary made years later.

In both cases the first visit should be a sort of scouting/intelligence gathering mission instead of a shake-down. Drop by on the other guy’s turf (Vito’s apartment, Michael’s office), introduce yourself, get a feel of what’s going on. Perhaps offer a small favor; then the other one will already be indebted to you. Consider if this person could be an ally, associate or in some other way complement or be absorbed into your own operation.

Afterwards have your own people do some background checking on the other person’s strengthes and weaknesses or other relevant facts. Always try to maximize the number of allies and minimize the number of enemies.

The novel and movies are full of such examples.
