Writing

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

“Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” – Louis L’Amour

Some of the things that come with years of writing experience are the ability to write well and to write fast.

The essay that I wrote about “The Making of Sunday Morning Classics on TBP” is a good example of writing fast. From the original draft, the changes, and fine-tuning, all-in it took me about half an hour to write.

I don’t always write fast though. Sometimes I take my time and just enjoy writing for its own sake.

My article on saxophones is a good example of that.

I never intended it as an article for TBP. I just got what I call, ‘a wild hare’, and decided to write an essay about them.

I am at an age where I write about whatever the hell I feel like writing about. In effect, I don’t write so much for TBP. I write for myself. I just share some of what I write with everyone on TBP.

The Making of Sunday Morning Classics on TBP

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

You can trace the origins of this feature to “Sunday Funnies.”

SMC used to post some classical music in the comments of Sunday Funnies. I always looked forward to them as I enjoyed the break from all of the hard rock and punk rock that dominates the comments on this site.

He said that he posted his selections there because there really wasn’t anywhere else to put them and that he thought it would be a good spot for people enjoying a nice quiet Sunday morning.

When I wrote my article about saxophones it only got about 40 or so comments, but the people that did comment seemed to like it and even contributed some music themselves.

Why independent websites matter {more than ever!}

Greetings to whoever stumbles upon this article! We hope you stick around to read it. We’re going to talk about the current state of “communication” (in quotes on purpose) in the world today.

Why independent websites matter {more than ever!}

We’ve owned and operated NJroute22.com for pushing two years. And certainly, no strangers to “blogging,” as we ran a successful website previously (starting circa 2005 before the over-saturation of “social media.”)

However, our latest creation here is “struggling,” for lack of a better word.

It’s understandable that any good product (today) takes some time to grow – and requires a lot of patience, refinements, adjustments, and know-how.

But in 2019 and beyond, a major shift has occurred. Both in user behavior as well as how the technology works. Equally important.

The main point is, and we feel it has been forgotten – is the real value of independent websites and publishers!

An Offer You Can’t Refuse

By Doug “Uncola” Lynn via TheBurningPlatform.com

We read to know we’re not alone.

Although that particular truism is often mistakenly attributed to the author C.S. Lewis, it was actually William Nicholson who wrote those words in his 1989 play “Shadowlands”, a story about C.S. Lewis.

Indeed. The power of words. And perhaps many of us out here in the interwebic blogosphere write to know we’re not alone as well.

Especially during times like these.

We use words to comfort and curse, to encourage, to promise, to teach, buy, sell, debate, learn, manipulate, lie, share, seduce, pray, preach, promote, warn, and even survive.

In the aforementioned play, “Shadowlands“, there is another quote that many now reading this may also find relevant to our times:

….pain is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world. Why must it be pain? Why can’t he rouse us more gently, with violins or laughter? Because the dream from which we must be wakened, is the dream that all is well.

WRITING STORIES THAT CHANGE THE WORLD

We have accomplished authors here on TBP. We have aspiring authors, such as, Stephanie (Clams). And none of us are so awesome that we can’t learn a thing or two, even if only writing an article … which is really a short story.  So, I hope this brief article is interesting and helpful for all.

Writing Stories to Change the World

By

We need stories to change the world.

There is truth. There is vision. There are values– They all come out of stories. Stories come first. You don’t just come up with a value. It is rooted in stories and or myth, or not to quibble, the key writings of major religions. Those writings are built with stories.

I interviewed Donald Maass– author of a number of highly acclaimed books for writers– The Breakout Novelist, The Breakout Novel, The Workbook for the Breakout Novel. These books and the workshops he offers, plus him being head of The Maass Literary Agency at maassagency.com have made him a rock star among budding and aspiring writers. I read one of his books, attended one of his workshops and decided an interview with him could help activists and people seeking to make change happen. So I did an interview with him. Here’s an excerpt.

I’ve seen that your ideas for writing novels could absolutely apply to writing about change and even in writing in terms of coming up with the words for the campaigns and what have you. Have you ever done anything with any of those areas?
