What NEW music are you listening to now?
I recently had a conversation about music with a client. We were wondering where people find great music nowadays. We know you aren’t going to find it on the radio. Yojimbo has posted some music I really liked.
What NEW music are your old asses listening to right now?
Me?
My music has to have 4 things.
1) badass guitar
2) made up of white people.
I can’t relate to anything but
Straight up rock and roll
Although, badass blues work
Also.
3) tension and release
4) a good hook
“Long Way To Go”
There’s something going down on the streets right now
Hate in the air we’re upside down, yeahGuns and bombs blood on the floor
Killing ourselves and there ain’t no cureMaybe tomorrow, maybe today…No more enemies
No more anarchy
Just more suffering
We got a long way to go
And no time to get there
One step forward two steps back
There ain’t nobody to blame
Something’s going on times are changing
Moving too fast we all gone crazy
Black man white man no despise
In the name of love open your eyes
Maybe tomorrow, maybe today…
No more love and hate
No more hope and faith
No more time to waste
We got a long way to go
And no time to get there
One step forward two steps back
We’re stuck in the middle
And way off track
We got a long way to go
And no time to get there
Say what you will
Do what you want
There ain’t nobody to blame
RUSH. Dio. Judas Priest. Frank Sinatra. Bing Crosby. Mel Tillis. Tom T. Hall….etc…
NEW music!!
Ok, folks. There is a genre of music out there that gets zero play time here in the USA called symphonic metal. The best known band (for the rest of the world, anyway) in this genre is Nightwish. They’re from Finland, but their songs are in the universal language, English. They’ve been around for quite a few years, actually, but I would guess they’d be new to most (if not nearly all) of TBP folks. They usually play at the yearly metal-fest in Wacken, Germany – they played to about 80,00 at their 2013 performance. Here are a few links from their 2015 world tour:
Tamere, Finland – My Walden
Tampere, Finland – Ghost Love Score
Tampere, Finland – The Islander
Here is their 2013 Concert at Wacken Germany
I would guess most folks response will be initially – no. Give it time; your brain just isn’t used to music like this….
They’re like Steeleye Span….
‘New’ music? Try this…Lakme, The Flower Duet….How many people understand and enjoy classical music?
Du Riechst So Gut…auf English es heist: You Smell So Good…Rammstein Russia
The Legend of Gilamesh….in Sumerian, possibly…
mg…m- thanks for that. That was awesome.
Maybe, sort of.
Hey DinCo,
This is the kind of diversity I was hoping for.
And everyone else also. Lots of great and wierd stuff.
Good! There is ALSO “Within Temptation”, a Dutch symphonic metal band that often tours with a full orchestra to back up the usual band instruments. There are quite a few SM bands, most of them from that part of the world. Epica and Delain are 2 others. Sad that they are all relatively unknown here in the USA. Oh, well.
Crazy,
Lovin it.
I don’t think anyone is making good music anymore.
this minute?
I am in awe that anyone could down-vote this ….
Added to my spotify. Thanks.
welcome.
Stevie Ray and ZZ Top are good enough. And a little Toys in the Attic Aerosmith. Art…and music, is not a sacrament. It is a pass time. Nothing more. Further, I would tender that very little new music is awe inspiring as Wagner or Mendelsson. About the same amount will matter a whit in 20 years.
Bob, I get it. This is just a way for us to hear NEW music that others may not be aware of.
didn’t know…thanks for getting me up to speed. 🙂
bob,
don’t listen to him,he’s full of crap–old muzak has stood the test of time–new music is usually bad b/c it hasn’t yet stood the test of time–it needs to pass w/at least a C+–
a suggestion though, put merle haggard on that list of oldsters you like or people might start questioning why your index finger is longer than your ring finger–
you know, the way we talk about wip when he’s not around–
The only new’ish thing I’ve even heard is Rammstein.
Nightwish? Within Temptation? Epica?
New/old- new to me:
Leonid and Friends
Ukrainian (!) band that covers Chicago songs, especially early stuff.
They sound more like Chicago than Chicago does. Their live shows are fantastic.
Musicianship is incredible.
Also Melbourne Ska Orchestra. Aussie group that does way more than ska and are also extremely talented.
Definintely, all about the bass. Praise God for the bass.
Amen…!
That version of all about that bass is a good one. At least once you get past the asshole with the ‘man bun’.
I like the sexy blonde…
Totally agree S.C.
WTF kind of “man” wears a bun?
The blond, yuppers, she definitely has the, uh, better .. uh voice. Yeah the voice, that’s it.
That is Morgan James. She could sing the phone book and it would great.
WOW!
She has a great pair of…lungs…
Thanks.
It’s great with the sound off too.
I guess my days of playing in rock bands are behind me Donkey. (I’m 67)
Admittedly, I played in those bands because I couldn’t play in a ‘big band’, what few there were, and travel for business to the extent that I did. I was never a very good guitarist, but I loved playing saxophone. Rock bands were always looking for a rhythm guitarist because guitar players always fancied themselves shredders. I could always find a place in a rock band as their rhythm guitarist and my traveling didn’t hurt much. It was pretty simple stuff. I did manage to sneak in some leads on the sax though. I made it part of the deal.
As for right now, I’m still listening to my Christmas music.
Although it’s technically not new, written by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff in 1994 (I don’t know how I missed it), it’s new to me.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” has become a ‘new favorite’ for me.
I like this version:
It may not be NEW NEW, but it’s newer than the long hair stuff that I listen to…
Sorry I can’t really contribute what you’re looking for, but I wanted you to know that I appreciated your contribution to my Christmas Music thread.
Steve,
Thanks for your story. I took up guitar and tried to teach myself. Yeah, I wanted to shred also. I’m trying to think of a more difficult instrument there is to learn. Maybe violen?
For string instruments, I would say the cello.
For wind instruments, the oboe is a tough one.
Those rock bands didn’t like the idea of me wanting to play some leads on saxophone until I showed them that I could play them using a mouthpiece pickup through my guitar effects pedals – flanger, echo, and distortion. They especially liked it through the distortion pedal and I got to play sax sometimes in rock bands…
Steve,
I did not know you could play saxophone through an amp. Sounds kick ass.
It was.
I went from the mouthpiece pickup through a small pre-amp, then into the guitar pedal effects, into my guitar amp.
I could even get close to a Carlos Santana sound sometimes.
It was pretty neat.
I played saxophone for almost 30 years…
I was first chair, first clarinet for three years. Graduated, not replaced. LOL…
I had the hots for a sax player for a while, but he had his eye on the trumpeter.
Joseph Pappas taught me to play piano and clarinet.
He’s a rocking award winning band director and composer. Go Donkass (we called him Donkass for some reason. A fabulous musician and teacher and friend, Joe!)

How’s that for eclectic taste in music?
i love this stuff. it’s new, but a throwback to bands like The Meters. theyre solid, super tight, and you can shake your butt to it:
I’m liking Greta.
Francis, nice.
Heard this haunting little melody in the background of a commercial, actually… it led me to creating a whole playlist. I simply jump around a lot on youtube using their “people also listened to” and just pick the ones that catch my ear………
another I found and enjoy
javelin..
Enjoyed that first one, I’d never heard it before. I found the Dead South tune the same way you described after listening to one GCP had posted:
annuit coeptis novus ordo seclorum
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oXYhaUfEQc
TBP theme song?
Life’s a bitch and then you die
Hre’s one for all of those who want European higher culture and it’s gorgeous women to continue… ( plus the metallica is fun)
Someone else who understands culture. What a great find for me to know you exist! And that’s Metallica’s best song (pretty sure).
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nigh Sweats
LL,
I’ll listen to these, in full, on my trip to the beach next week.
I quite like them. They remind me of being young and going to good bar bands in Nashville. Not overproduced, nice sound, tight band. And definitely not new era pop. What is not to like.
I’m definitely bookmarking this Burning Platform post. Lots of new stuff to check out when I have the time.
Plus “You Worry Me”
May be their best.
Drud – that is a great song. Glad I am not the only fan.
Not at all…They’re from Denver. A friend of mine either knew them or had played a show with them before SOB dropped and they exploded.
Really good stuff ?
This guy probably won’t go over well with the majority of the Boomers but I think his story is interesting,
No record label, no manager ….
I admit i am stuck in the long hair metal days of the eighties. Rockin with Dokken! New music blows!
I agree. There is no new music worth a shit, just like there hasn’t been any new movies come out worth a shit either. Talent in the arts is a thing of the past.
Samantha Fish….
Oh, there’s lots of talent out there but it isn’t given the air time or publicity. Not part of the machine you see..gotta pay Satan first….
Yahsure,
What do you think of the song I posted? I still love the hair band stuff to this day.
That start to “In My Dreams” is just killer.
Blues Saraceno
The Heavy Horses
This is his newest, 6 days ago. He talks shit to everyone , fits right in at TBP
“I hate hip hop”
Hi Plato. Long time no see.
There are several Mongolian metal bands, so far I’ve enjoyed their stuff.
I’ve seen Rammstein live in Frisco and hardly understood the lyrics just like these guys! I wouldn’t mind catching these guys live either
Korn’ s new stuff is pretty good too
Then there’s a band named Clutch who just recently put out there take on a classic!
But my all time favorite Clutch song has to be “Escape from the prison planet” orrrrr…..”SpaceGrass”

Just a few years old.
I’m flying to Atlanta in January to see Tool as a birthday present. They are my favorite band, have new music for the 1st time in more than a decade, and were on my bucket list since I missed the Aenima Tour.
Tool is amazing in concert! Awesome birthday present! You should have a great experience!
I have a feeling you might already know this, but you should check out Maynards other bands Perfect Circle and Puscifer. That dude is so talented.
Dust In A Baggie – Billy Strings
Dust in a dime baggy?
You got it.
Showing your age? (all our ages, I’d wager). What we wouldn’t have given for zip lock bags, back in the day, eh?

Donkey, good taste in music. Your articulation of the important elements is learned and so clean.
Go Canada!!
I used to correspond with a friend in Canada pretty regularly.
One day she told me that her daughter was a budding professional singer and that she was going to be singing the national anthems for both the US and Canada at a televised hockey game.
I suggested that she could just combine them into one song:
‘Oh say can you see the maple leaf on that tree…’
My friend laughed and told her daughter.
In her nervousness, the girl actually sang that.
And she blamed me.
How was that my fault???
I like it.
Wow! Not bad! 2 very good songs! Thanks for sharing!
Try some of these:
Lawrence Welk–Jammin At the Apollo, originally recorded in 1941
New music? There hasn’t been any (or very little) worth listening to since the 70s and early 80s……….and the ‘newer’ it is, the worse it is (in most cases)
BSHJ,
I don’t think that’s true. We just need to find it. Creative people are out there, they just don’t get a chance to be heard on a large scale. Radio is holding all the new great stuff back. I’m sure of it.
If you like this……….. Findley
IT GETS BETTER
YOU LIKE BLUES?
Samantha Fish
Not cutting edge new, but I like some of the stuff Faun is creating.
Anon,
I’m kinda feel in that one. Thanks
Ok. That’s something I’ve never seen/heard before.

(edit: I see one of the Heavy Horses tunes finally loaded above. This thread is great, it’s like surfing AOL back in the 90s with the load time lol)
We’re doing CAYAMO in early February. Quebe Sisters are playing on the 1st day of the cruise. Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, Mavis Staples, Hayes Carll, Alison Moorer and on and on.
BTW, Shovels & Rope put on a great Americana music festival in Charleston every April called High Water. 3 days, 2 stages on the Cooper River. It’s a can’t miss. Not only fab music but food heaven back on the peninsula (think Ultimate Coconut Cake® at The Peninsula Grill). Saw Bill Murray (he lives here) at the Robert Earl Keen Xmas Concert last week. FELICE NAVIDAD!!!

99% of it is crap.
Doors, Steely Dan, etc. That’s friggin music
Put your ear phones on and try some Sturgill Simpson….
I think Cage the Elephant is a very solid band. They have songs in several different styles that are reminiscent of other bands, but they’re all good.
I though this G. Love the first few times I heard it:
This one sounds a bit like the Pixies:
A little like Weezer perhaps:
Not exactly new, but I constantly talk up Marcy Playground. Considered a One Hit Wonder, but that hit, Sex and Candy, is a middle of the pack song among their five albums of material.
Here’s a few good uns:
GCP,
Thank you very much. I will check that out fo sho.
KNBT 92.1 Americana Radio…..Good stuff….New Braunfels, Texas

Thanks Mygirl.

I’ll look at that one too. Gruene, TX. is one of my all time favorite places to be! Last time there saw Hayes Carll in the Hall and had a BALL! Need to get down there again…
Rock & Roll must be stamped out at all costs. It is a greater threat to our society than even the opioid crisis………..
