Black Swans, Dead Cats, Live Bats, and Goodbye to All That

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

Had enough excitement yet? At least the stock markets are following an established script: the bubble pops, the elevator drops, for a while it stops… and then investments sink to the deepest sub-basement, where they linger for a long, long time. Hello, next great depression…. We know how that story goes, even if it hurts.

This corona virus is something else. It engulfs whole populations in a fog of confounding narratives. Is it no worse than a bad common cold, except for old folks already half-gone with chronic illness? Or does it really slam people even in the midst of life? Well, Wuhan hospital director Liu Zhiming, 51, went down two weeks ago, and gastroenterologist Xia Sisi, 29, and Dr. Peng Yinhua, also 29, and some prominent Iranian politicians, and lots of very sick healthcare workers from Korea to Italy. Whatever corona virus is, I’m not persuaded that it’s a hoax.

One monster banging around in that fog is the narrative that China started this thing simply to get rid of Mr. Trump. There’s a real baby-and-bathwater proposition. Would China, in effect, blow up its export economy for that, i.e. commit suicide? Because a lot of those prior arrangements will probably not come back — the manufacturing supply lines for this-and-that, the fabulous cornucopia of plastic goodies extruded from all those smoking factories and flushed out to the world, the whole glorious let’s-get-rich extravaganza that Deng Xiaoping kicked off forty years ago. It’s looking like the global economy is on the rocks, perhaps for good, as we knew it. Is China as plumb crazy as, for instance, America’s political Left?

If anything, China has only validated Mr. Trump’s point that America bargained away its industrial independence, and must become more self-sufficient again. True enough. Where I depart from MAGA is my sense that the industrial age itself has probably shot its wad, and that whatever America makes of itself going forward is likely to be a much more modest and simpler way of life, without a lot of the dazzling bells and whistles we’ve become accustomed to, and perhaps some genuine hardship.

I say that, readers will recall, because it really all comes down to the energy inputs available and that part of the picture has gone pretty grim in just the past week. The convergence of world events has driven a wooden stake through the heart of the shale oil business. From the get-go, shale oil was a loser because it just cost too much to get that oil out of the rock it was trapped in. It only worked as a financial stunt during the low interest lending orgy of the past decade. It was a magnificent stunt, you understand, goosing US production to 13 million barrels a day — energy independence, with all those short-term feel-good vibes — but it was just a stunt and now it’s over. The reality of this has yet to penetrate the American hive-mind.

Corona virus neatly imploded that financing scaffold, and now, with world business locked down and markets cratering, capital is vanishing. As I’ve averred before, the shale companies spent ten years proving to investors that they can’t make a red cent. Their bonds and notes are sinking into sub-investment-grade oblivion. Some of the major producers — Whiting, Oasis, Chesapeake — have lost over 90 percent of their share value and will probably soon be gone. Who would lend them more money now, even if the money was there? (Maybe Uncle Sam’s wicked step-son, Mr. Trump, if it comes down to that… we’ll see.) Meanwhile, oil is cheap, but demand is gone, planes are not flying, ships are not sailing, stadiums are empty, lots of things are shutting down, and quite a bit of it may not ever come back.

US politics were already crazy enough before all this suddenly happened. The crisis of the past few weeks also saw the supernatural elevation of Joe Biden to the utterly implausible role of last-vehicle-standing in the Democratic Party demolition derby. Who do they think they are kidding? Not only is Joe Biden observably gone-in-the-head — that is, clearly unfit to be president — but he’s loaded down with a steaming, fetid cargo of easily proven grifting offenses so clunky and obvious they would embarrass a South Philly mobster. I’m sure Mr. Biden stayed in the race solely to avoid investigation for his operations in Ukraine and China with son, Hunter.

Corona virus has provided a chance for the former veep to duck out of the spotlight, where he spent recent weeks blathering incoherently and starting fights with voters. And now something really nefarious may be a’foot with the Dems. If the wounded Bernie Sanders does not use Sunday’s debate as an opportunity to expose Mr. Biden’s dementia and finish him off, here’s the DNC’s playbook: Hope that the stock market crash and broken economy sink Mr. Trump in public opinion, then contrive to nominate Mr. Biden and get a black woman on the ticket as veep. That part of the story has been trotted out already. I’m beginning to wonder whether that black woman will happen to be Michelle Obama, and I’m also wondering whether Barack Obama is behind the scenes orchestrating this. Of course, Mr. Biden, if elected, will serve in office less than a week — just long enough to hustle him off with the 25th amendment. Voila! The Obamas are back in the White House, out-Clintoning even the Clintons! Happy days are here again! (Not.)

Quite surprised he has not grasped that the Hillary is the one to swoop in and save the Dims, not Michelle.

With oil prices in the basement now is the time to fully replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. When the shale industry collapses we’ll be right back to being held hostage by OPEC and Russia.

Another good one from Kunstler. I really do fear my former friends the Democrats will find a way to keep Joe Biden upright through the election, and, with the obvious collusion of the MSM plus the mess we are in – which Trump did not cause but will be blamed for – that sick old man might win. Biden is about mid-stage Dementia right now and his illness is moving fast. Witness the increased aggression this week with the poor guy worried about his gun rights. I wish I knew who will be ‘behind the curtain’ if Biden wins. I assume it would be a quite small, powerful group. I am reminded of the comedy movie Dave, where the evil chief of staff enlists Presidential look-alike Dave to stand in for the comatose POTUS. It all falls apart when Dave rebels and outs the chief of staff. In real life, this could turn out awfully badly. We need to re-elect Trump, take the House and keep the Senate. Just my opinion, and yes, I voted for Trump the first time. I used to live in NYC. He is a Queens fighter with all the warts, and I am OK with that.

No. Maybe YOU need Trump, but I do not. I’d like the entire system to just leave Tennessee the fuck alone, thank you, and allow us to strike our own treaties and deals with sane governmental systems. I’m tired of looter cities like NYC. I have nothing in common with them and if they burn to the ground from this virus, so be it. The last thing we need is to elect another piece of shit New York carpetbagger.

I don’t know where else to post this. I don’t want to hijack a thread but, my wife just went to the bank to withdraw 1k. She was told she could only withdraw half that much a day. I live in mi and I am wondering if this is happening else where or in any other banks. I’m not trying to create panic. We have been with this bank for years and this is the first time something like this has taken place. I have to add that this is a Credit Union.

IDK my sister went in and pulled out 5k from her credit union account, en la Florida no problemo, she watches the financials like Lynette Zang, Peter Schiff and Jeremiah Bebe, and thinks the overnight repos are about to fail, that there will be a liquidity crises that will bring the banking system down, triggering a derivatives crises, so she picked up a bunch of physical metals/silver yesterday to ride it out

Warren: Thank you for he heads up. My wife just arrived home to give me the full story. It goes like this. The policy changed in this institution as of today. The account that she tried to access was a savings account. From what she understood, the depositors are pulling money out to buy prepping items. This was at least the excuse. Like I said, I am not trying to create panic, I am just trying to give a heads up to what happen to us today.

Yesterday I had a check to deposit and wanted cash back, a few thousand. The assistant bank manager gave me grief, with idiotic statements like my money wasn’t safe at home (much safer in the bank, of course) or I could get in a wreck on the way home and other equally inane statements. Then she pulled out a paper that had questions like, was I being coerced to keep cash?

I gave her a certain look, told her it was my money and I wasn’t going to repeat my demand.

I will be looking for a new bank once the dust settles…If it settles….

They’re all going to ask you those questions.

Short Story:
Long time ago I transferred all $ from Bank of America to a Credit Union. One of my auto-pays did not get switched over to the new bank in time. Bank of America opened my checking account back up and paid it, sent me an overdraft. I called my auto-pay account and they said the next payment will be taken from the new bank account. I went in to BOA and paid the overdraft, closed my account and told them not to open it again. Sure enough BOA opened it again and sent me an overdraft. I called the auto-pay account and reamed their asses. Back to BOA I went. This time I yelled right in the middle of the lobby, “If I don’t get my account closed right now, I’m calling the police”. 4 people came running over and we went into an office. The bank manager handed me, in cash, all of my overdraft fees plus some other money (I still don’t know what the extra $$ was for), gave me his business card and told me to call him personally if there were any further problems. There weren’t.

Donkey:
Tragic that we have to go thru that level of BS with banks. At least you got their attention. My clever plan was initially to open a CD for a few months and then said manager showed me what CDs were presently paying….0.2%. Why bother?
I used to bank with BOA until they pulled similar shenanigans with me and I said nope, bye bye, sayonara and that was that.

What prevents Moochell from being Veep, is that it would surly come out that s/he is a he, and well that would be a meh in left wing Amerika, it would out BathhouseBarry as the flaming homo he really is, which pretty much would destroy him in the eyes of his fellow Muslims, and I doubt he would be able to deal with that

I never heard a narrative that the Chinese did this to get Trump,
I heard they did it to stop the Hong Kong riots, and also to kill off a bunch of dissenters,
thus the mobile incinerators on full blast, but that is pure conjecture.

Notice how know one gives a rats ass about reading that China has mobile carcass incinerators, 1000’s a 1000’s of these on tractor trailers, and a history of genocide on there own citizens.

no problem, lovely people, we will do business with you.

but that is just conjecture.
I know of no reason to believe it is true.
even if I read it on the NY Times, it still could be, you know, fake news.
maybe I read it on ZH, or maybe it was twitter, who cares at this point.

Conjecture or not. If they will stick a needle in a new born female child to kill her what value do you think they put on your or your families life? Now to take this a step further, planned parenthood is doing the same thing here and it is being funded or condoned by, IMO, both sides of the isle. I think it is long past the time for folks to wake up.

Agreed. The baby killing band has marched on unabated for years and years, including under Trump. I can’t believe that even the Democrats don’t realize that murdering future taxpayers eventually causes a budget crisis, but here we are.

Seems kind of odd that our satellites have not been able to provide evidence of activities like mobile carcass incinerators. Maybe their batteries need replacing?

Doesn’t that also apply to Tesla, Amazon, Facebook, Uber etc. This rodeo is old, tired and broke.
