When I was a little kid there was something going on at a local airport. I just remember a lot of commotion and there was a marching band and the whole works. One of the big attractions was that Aunt Jemima was going to be there. Up comes a vehicle and this really large (3-400 lb) Black woman in the Jemima outfit got out and worked the crowd. She was the model or actress who played Aunt Jemima on TV commercials and her face was on the pancake mix box. I don’t believe they had an Aunt Jemima syrup back in those days. Circa 1962.
When I was a kid, same circa, the Kiwanis Club would have a pancake day and have a woman dressed as Aunt Jemima. Walking around the dining hall.
I just liked the syrup. No negative vibe for me. I used to go eat at a Restaurant called Sambos, it had a statue of a black jockey in the front. I never dwelled on the black statue. I also remember eating at Hobo Joes, it had a statue of a white Hobo character in front of the place. We just liked the place. People are overly sensitive, where will it end?
The PC crowd early on made them change sambo’s name because of “Little Black Sambo” being declared racist.
In the mid 60’s, my oldest sister bought Little Black Sambo, so her future kids could read her favorite book. She still has it.
At first, this sort of bothered me, but then I realized I don’t give a fuck about mainstream industrial shit “food” and other commodities. So the death of Aunt Jemima or Rastus or Uncle Tom’s rice or whatever really doesn’t matter.
That GMO crap isn’t good for you, no matter what stupid logo or name graces the box. And worrying about the world’s largest food producers and their shit brands is stupid.
If you really miss the stupid logo, grab a permanent marker and draw your own.
On the other hand, I think we should be telling the blacks to protest more, because the only black logos and characters are being purged from our store shelves. That should put this all in perspective for them.
