Useless? I think our masters find them very useful.
Surgical masks are for the operating room ( maybe that’s why they call them surgical masks?). They are used in sterile environments to protect the patient on the table from gross droplets. They are to limit a potential exhalation threat from the wearer and offer virtually no inspiration protection to the wearer. In a sterile environment their effectiveness is approx. 2 hours. They aren’t designed for use outside an OR-period.
N95 masks are for inspiration protection from GROSS pollutants. They offer no expiratory protection to another person (you exhale through the valve, offering no inhibition to spreading a viral load from the wearer to another person).
Scarfs, bandanas, homemade items are like chicken wire stopping mosquitos.
All masks decrease oxygen saturation to the blood by anyone wearing them. They put you in a hypoxic (low oxygen) environment.
All masks also promote bacterial, fungal and viral growth due to moisture contamination from exhaling.
Masks obviously do not prevent or inhibit ocular/eye transmission of aerosolized droplets and may increase the likelihood by directing exhalation flow across the eyes by poor fitting masks.
I’m sure there are OSHA standards for viral protection for the nose and eyes. You can bet they are mighty expensive in their initial cost and costly in the need for frequent filter changes etc.
It’s all theater to make you a compliant cow now and for future misadventures by our “rulers”. COMPLY or DIE.

The good masks, P100 and N100, are not useless. Far from it. These are what people should be wearing. Even the shitty masks reduce the likelihood of infection.
