The photographer, John Bailey, says that the beast leapt into the water to grab it while it was busy eating another fish.
The cat then pulled it out of the ocean and onto the sand. He eventually dropped the shark and fled because it got scared (presumably from having his photo being taken), so he didn’t even get to enjoy his meal.
Commenters, of course, are questioning the validity of the photo, but experts say it’s actually a pretty normal occurrence.
“There is no reason to believe it’s fake,” said a rep from the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Ken, I saw a show on one of the history channels years ago, about the rise of civilization. The main point was a king of a city state in Ancient Greece decided to let farmers keep and sell some of the olives they grew, which was a novel concept at the time. Production skyrocketed, and soon they could afford non-farm activities like philosophy.
In the end of the Soviet Union, some farms were de-collectivized, and… production skyrocketed. The government in the US has been meddling in farm production since about the ’30s. There are many landowners (some very wealthy) who are paid not to produce to manipulate crop prices due to government policies. If every farmer grows soybeans, prices plummet. If they study which crops will be in demand, foreign and domestic, the market will work; without the influence of a politician in DC who has perhaps never seen a farm.
