Revolutionary Roles

I just ran over a squirrel. He was making a dash across the road and my oncoming car started a cascade of decisions in his mind, “Oh! Car! Back! No! Across! Wait! No! Hurry! Go! Back!”

Splat.

Mr. Squirrel’s indecision led to an early, meaningless death under my steel belted radials. Let that be a lesson to us all. When death is approaching at flank speed, that’s not the time for waffling and confusion. That’s the time to know who you are, and what is your role, goal, and plan.

Let’s look at the roles and actions of people who participated in historical revolutions, just as a study exercise, of course. Approaching slavery and death exposes great character in some, but not without preparation. If you were, hypothetically, to become a revolutionary, what role would you play? How would you prepare? Our goal is to secure the revolution, and hopefully avoid indecision and an early splat. This makes a great party game.

Here are some roles. Which one(s) resonate with you?

Financier – This is the person who finances the revolution, out of personal wealth hidden from the tyrant, or doled out in secret right under the tyrant’s nose from the tyrant’s treasury. There are even many people in the countryside with considerable wealth and resources hidden from the tyrant, and some are willing to help in this way.

Strategist – This person or group determines the overall strategy for the revolution, the high level goals, and interactions between adversaries and friends on the playing field to accomplish those goals. These are high level thinkers who excel at strategy, seeing how actions mesh with goals and guts to produce results. Their fiber is made of the principles for which we fight, and their eyes are fixed on these principles continuously.

Tactician – The tactician takes the goals of the strategist and formulates concrete plans to get the job done, understanding the realities of manpower, financing, supplies, logistics, and the tyrant’s moves. Detailed, real time knowledge of who and what is on the field is required, as well as what and where the field is, because not all are made of real estate. These people coordinate with all other roles to win each battle.

Evangelist – This person impassions the population with the message containing the core principles, prompting people to step into action. Every person on both sides needs to know the noble cause for which we fight, and this cause draws opponents to our side, and cements the allegiance of those already with us. The evangelist does not get dragged down into the mire of petty detailed debate, but proclaims truth from the rooftops.

Propagandist – The propagandist has a more complex role than the evangelist, one to broadcast the message of our purity of purpose, and the evil of the tyrant. Goebbels famously said to lie, make it a big lie, and repeat it often. But he was a small thinker. Constant repetition of the truth, the big truth, for those who fight tyrants, is so much more powerful than lies. The propagandist also counters the lying message of the tyrant in real time, like a pit bull, never backing down. Truth exposes the tyrant to be petty and small.

Politician – Some of the politicians in the tyrant’s government are actually revolutionaries. They work from the inside to collect information, retard the tyrant’s progress, and recruit others for the cause. There are also politicians within the revolution’s faithful, lending counsel to the leaders and brokering power among the people.

Intelligence Operative – In every war, there are people who move information from one side to the other. A revolution is no different. Within the tyrant’s sphere are people who want to help the revolution, they just don’t know how. The intelligence operative coordinates these sources and collects information critical to victory.

Informant – These are the people on the inside of the tyrant’s organization feeding information to the intelligence operatives.

Quartermaster – An army marches on its stomach, and no revolution succeeds without supplies and equipment. (Those hackers are going to need pallets of hot pockets.) Some people are skilled at this, and have resources to pull together materiel for complex operations.

Technician – This is a general term for everyone else who has a skill to offer, aside from soldier. For example, nurses, doctors, cooks, radio operators, IT professionals, cryptographers, psychologists, engineers, chaplains, cheerleaders, broadcast professionals, skilled trades people, … all have a role to play in specific support areas. If you have a skill, it will be needed.

Boots on the Ground – These are the people putting their lives on the line to win the war. In a revolution, we want people trained in these activities to step forward first for this role. The tyrant has already trained people for this role, and many will turn to our true cause. They know what they are doing in battle and can advise the tacticians as to what’s happening and how goals can be met. But looking at our list of roles, they may not even be the most numerous on our team, especially in a technological, twenty-first century fight.

Remember, a person can serve in multiple roles, depending on their talents.

There is one role that I have saved for last, and it may be the most important. That is the role of Networker. Certainly you know some annoying people, no matter whose name you mention they say, “I know them!” That’s a networker. If you are a networker, maybe this is the first hint that your innate ability is annoying to others? No matter, your skill is very important.

Before the American revolution, the colonies implemented Committees of Correspondence. These groups communicated between the colonies to keep everyone informed what the British were up to, and the colonies’ responses. That was networking.

Modern social media gives the networker a peacetime outlet, and many find their niches in various corners of the Internet. Unfortunately, social media also encourages gross stupidity, and some good networkers who don’t have a rudder devolve to sexting. In a modern revolution, most certainly the Internet and social media will be shut off or restricted (that is, totally monitored and censored), and our networkers will have to find alternative media, hopefully not commensurate with sexting. Our evangelists work with networkers to keep them on mission.

Today, most everyone has a normalcy bias, and talk of revolution is sneered or laughed at. A good revolutionary networker talks to many people during the week and identifies those who are sick of tyranny and itching for full freedom. Over time the networkers build the army of the revolt, almost on their own. A good networker knows when to be bold and when to be subtle. And we have need for networkers now, while we still have a modicum of free speech and association. Oh, but I’m speaking hypothetically, of course.

And find a good strategist now. Feed them well. Any good strategist will tell you that the revolution starts long before the first shot is fired, and long before the tyrant knows a revolution is afoot. The wise wait for the tyrant’s weakest moment to reveal themselves, when he is overwhelmed with the crushing weight of his own egotistical tyranny. These days are evil, and I understand you are bucking for positive change toward full freedom. I only ask you to look at the long game and pick your hypothetical opportunity wisely. A strategist understands this principle.

Read that list of roles again. If you by chance were to participate in a hypothetical revolution, what would be your role? What’s your skill, and your passion? Who’s your nearest patriotic networker who can connect you to the cause? What roles do you see others in?

And… now you have a great hypothetical party game to play next time you have friends over.
