Martel – I find it quite humorous that some people are predicting China to invade the US with a couple hundred thousand troops currently stationed in Canada and Mexico. I cannot image the outrage of the population if foreign troops were to set foot on our soil.

my recollection was that Germany had a (sovereign?) military base somewhere in the SW, I believe. The only outrage I remember seeing was in the mirror.
We have lots of foreign troops in America. They train here and are embedded with us to learn how we do things. We also have foreign military missions all over the place. I knew guys who competed for German Army proficiency badges with the German Army here. If you drive down the street from Dulles Airport departure terminal, there’s a German military mission with German military guards, complete with red and white striped doghouse for guards at the gate.
We routinely allow Russians to come here and visit any location they want as part of the Open Skies treaty.
It’s not like they’re an enemy force intent on subduing us. It’s just diplomacy. If you’re upset about that, imagine how the people in the 180 countries we’re in feel about it.

I think it always comes back to culture….a highly energized cohesive population will defeat most tech (except nukes et. al) and that type of culture will never be successfully occupied for long……eg. I had read about the US buying some of the Iron dome components, as they have had pretty good success with it. Certainly the people of small hats have had great success in defeating armies that are multiple times its size. They are tenacious, have excellent technology and are fighting for their homeland.

North America probably has a minimum of 100 million armed citizens, many of whom are ex military or LE (the rest of us are just grumpy assholes who are happy to shoot commies). There isn’t a military anywhere on the planet that could even invade Commiefornia and make it’s way to the eastern slop of the Cascades without being ripped to shreds by regular and irregular forces.
From our perspective, China is a paper dragon militarily. Our big problem with China lies not in manpower but in their ability to wage 4th and 5th generation style war.

America’s military is super powerful against weaker nations and still can’t win a war in 20 years. Their military is primarily concerned with building the most powerful Political Correctness ever.
China’s massive military is huge, but a paper tiger made up primarily of short-term conscripts who spend much of their time singing songs and being indoctrinated. Until recently, they hadn’t even figured out joint command. They haven’t fought a “war” in over 40 years.
Three wars with Vietnam. Lost all of them. In at least one, Vietnam didn’t even call up the regular army and all the fighting was done by reserves and people’s militia. I am told they really schooled China in the proper use of artillery.
