The Americano Cubano

Guest Post by Eric Peters

America may soon look a lot like Cuba – with lots of ancient cars on the road, kept on the road by determined owners who want nothing to do with the “advanced driver assistance” technology of new cars – or electric cars.

This is better than it sounds.

The Cubans had to make-do with actually ancient cars from the 1950s and before – which were the new cars in Cuba before Fidel Castro took over and no more new cars were imported (except, of course, for the ones Fidel and his communists party nomenklatura drove around in).

We Americanos have the advantage of much newer – modern – cars to keep on driving. Cars that are arguably the apotheosis of car design – which was reached by the mid-late 1990s and fully expressed by the early-mid 2000s, by which time any car you bought was a car that had a largely maintenance-free 15-20 year service life on the low end – and a body that would last twice as long as any car made before then, due to vastly better put-together processes at the time of its manufacture.

The cars of the ’40s and ’50s the Cubanos had to make-do with were cars designed to last maybe six or seven years before needing a mechanical overhaul and the only reason their bodies have lasted as long as they have is because there’s no snow (and no road salt) in Cuba.

Our cars could last almost indefinitely – and without us having to drive cars with ’40s and ’50s-era capabilities and amenities. While avoiding new cars with modern tech.

I made myself a cup of coffee and sat down in the garage to consider my ’02 Nissan Frontier – a truck that has a modern, fuel-injected engine that only needs to be tuned-up once every 100,000 miles or so and in between asks for occasional oil and filter changes and not much else. It has power steering, air conditioning and a modern aftermarket stereoI installed (more here)  that’s as good as many factory-installed new car stereos without the new car.

I do not need much else and thus do want much else.

How much would it cost me to keep this truck as an everyday driver for another 15-plus years? Probably not much since it’s only got 140,000 miles on it – which is the equivalent of 30,000 miles (or less) on a ’50s or ’60s-era car.

Probably it’ll run without needing a mechanical rebopp for another 100,000 miles and maybe longer before it needs anything major. But if I needed a new engine, the cost for that would be a fraction of the cost of a new truck. I actually looked it up and the cost for a rebuilt crate engine from JEGS is about $2,800 (see here). Then good to go for another 20 years-plus and for a lot less than the cost of a new Frontier, which comes standard with all the tech I don’t want – and have no interest in paying for.

The engine has some electronic controls, but they are comparatively simple because the engine has a throttle body injection system; there are aftermarket replacements for them, if need be – and the cost for that is about $2,000 all in.

The ’02’s manual transmission has no electronics at all – unlike the almost-universally standard automatics that come in the new trucks. A manual rebuild is straightforward and the cost is about $1,000 – plus a new clutch once every 150,000 or so miles (my truck still has its original clutch).

That brings us up to about $7,000 to redo most of the truck’s major drivetrain parts. Add in another $3k for rebuilding of the suspension and brakes and for replacing accessories such as power steering pumps and the AC compressor, various bits and pieces.

Keeping in mind that  it probably won’t be necessary to replace most of these things for a long time to come and certainly not all at once. So need to come up with the money all at once. But for the sake of discussion, a $10k outlay to bring the ’02 truck back to functionally new.

How about cosmetically?

My almost-20-year-old truck is still in remarkably nice shape; the paint still shines and the bed isn’t rusty. It has some scrapes and few dings but on the whole is still what they call a solid “number 2” vehicle in the classic car trade. Not a show car by any stretch  – but not a beater, either.

Most 15-20-year-old late-model vehicles fall into this category – because unlike the ancient cars of the pre-modern era, their paintwork and bodywork lasts much longer, especially if taken reasonable care of, as by washing it and waxing it every so often.

Mine doesn’t need a paint job or bodywork to go another 10-plus years without looking like a beater.

But what it if did?

It would be pretty easy – and not too pricey – to bring this truck back up to cosmetically as-new, too. I asked a friend of mine who runs a paint and body shop would it would cost to fix the dents and spray the body and maybe spray in a new bedliner. About $5,000 – for a really nice paint job, comparable to the factory paint job.

So, for about $15,000 I could have – in effect – a brand-new ’02 Nissan Frontier for about half the cost of a brand-new Nissan Frontier . . . without the brand-new truck’s “tech.”

My truck doesn’t “assist” me in any way. It doesn’t even beep at me if I fail to “buckle up” for “safety.” It is very old in that respect.

But that’s precisely why I have no interest in anything new.

If you feel the same, maybe consider the same. Be an Americano Cubano – with the AC cranked and cruising at 70MPH all day long.

When I had to move to France in 2008 (mother sick refusing to move to the States) I bought an old Renault turbo diesel, it has now 247 000 or so kilometres (which is nothing for a diesel many are known to go up to 1 000 000 K). It has nothing electronic on it, and outside a battery going down during a EMP surge, I can keep on driving. I kept in good shape and it doesn’t even pollute (very heavy pollution control in Franczozie) I love it. The best part even in a minor flood, because there is not much of electric necessities, I keep on running

Opting out of the scam any way you can is always a good idea. I have a feeling that the real rub is going to be procuring fuel, but we shall see.

In addition to possibly being a Jew, I might also be part Cuban. I’m still driving my ’95 Buick Century every day … and loving it.

This is EXACTLY what it looks like, including the color, and the 14″ tires, really. Yeah, it’s an”old granny car”. So what!!

Not driving it. Can’t. Too painful. Bought for Ms Freud. She never drove it before she died. Probably gonna sell it in the spring.

But, the rear passenger shock went kaput. Do you know how much it will cost to to replace? $1,600 FUCKING DOLLARS!!!

I have a friend who is a career mechanic. He’s about 20 years my junior. Perfect because I do not think I’ll ever have to go to a shop again unless he or I move too far apart. He can do anything at his home. He even pulled and rebuilt a modern engine. The guy can do it all. I save lots of $$ and he loves the extra $$. Win win.

It’s an E500.

We have a very trusted family friend who has owned his “German Car Repair” shop for 40 some years (his son now runs it). Best mechanic I’ve ever known.

He told me those shocks are the worst thing about that car … they break all the time. Fix the right rear … next month the left rear might break.

He said the way to go is a “conversion kit” …. $1,600 for all four shocks, and they work great. I trust him, so I’ll go with that.

Bought mine for $2,800 …. but I think around 8 years ago. Current miles …. 87,000. I honestly believe I’ll be driving that lovely machine until the day I croak. The ONLY work it has needed all these years — other than routine maintenance (battery, tires, etc) is the alternator was replaced. The thing is built like a brick shithouse.

Got up at 5:30AM to shovel … and right now it doesn’t look like I shoveled at all. We’re getting hammered. Well … might as well get back at it, again.

Why don’t you trade that junker state of Neu Joeysie for a good state like Tennessee, North Florida, or Texas etc? That great old car you got there is saving you money but a better state would save even more and I bet you’d like the country a heap more. I believe most country folks would love to have a nice rebel rousing neighbor; ask some of us what we think.

Mom can’t move. She’ll be 90 in two weeks. she doesn’t want to move. She wants to die in her own home … the only home she and dad ever owned, and they worked hard for it. Maybe I could talk her into moving. But,I don’t want to. At her age, she deserves what she wants.

Once she passes,I won’t stay here any longer than it takes to sell the house. I do like TN … and Arkansas.

I have been thinking about what I’m going to do for my next car. I’d love a 1970 Monte Carlo with disc brakes, a modern engine/transmission,
5-point harness (since it wouldn’t have airbags) and a roll cage. That would be the last car I’d ever own because I’d do exactly as stated in this article.

I was at Keesler AFB Miss 1970 when Lt Stankowitz drove a new Monte Carlo from NJ and parked it at a motel. The next morning it was sitting on blocks. The Sheriff told him: “What the hell did you expect parking that SOB overnight with NJ plates here boy?”.

I love those old land yachts. Smooth ride, great motors and oomph when needed. My mother had an LTD, driving it was like piloting a yacht. Way back then those were the best for long road trips. Eat up the miles, humming along…thank God for the cheap gas back then….

Kinda made a mistake a couple years back and bought a 014 f250 to haul an RV trailer around. I’m truly thinking of ditching both and going back to a pre-electronic everything vehicle with zero ‘safety’ chimes nagging at me for everything. Perhaps going diesel because you can burn just about any oil in it you can scrounge if need be. One thing tho is I’d never give up on a pickup… just can’t get away from its practicality of that box. Maybe the millions I’ll make on silver will get me some more dirt and an ol pickup…

I’ve been slowly fixing up my older f-250 so I can have a good tow rig. I wonder how many people are perfectly happy with their paid-for vehicle and nearing retirement age, don’t want to pay for an electric car to make someone else happy. Before the election gasoline here was 2.19 a gallon and since then is now 2.59. I remember during the Obama/ Biden regime it was 3.89 a gallon. Yep, good times under the Democrats.

old mercedes diesels are still the absolute king. fully mechanical. the only electronics in the whole car, are in the glow plug shut-off relay.. and thats still like 2 or 3 discrete components which will likely survive any nuke far enough that you’d still get the door open and be able to grab the steering wheel…
fuel availability will be a bit harder to ensure. for diesels, you have a wider range of fuels you can burn, which will be more likely to be available (or old storage fuel would still be good enough longer) , and older indirect injection (prechamber) diesels with fully mechanical injection (almost any diesels after the early -mid 90s are using electronically controlled injectors) will also handle crappy or nonstandard fuel a lot better.

I have a 2018 Subaru Outback. Took it in for the 30,000 mile maintenance, and got a 2021 Outback loaner.

The 2021 has a huge display – and guess what? There are no discrete climate controls – they are all on a touch screen menu. That’s right – Subaru is supposed to be a safety conscious company, but in order to adjust the seat heat or blower fan, you have to dig through menus, while you’re driving down the highway.

The powers that be will allow you to keep your car. They will just make it difficult to run. The can create exclusion zones where you can’t drive an ICE vehicle. They can raise gas taxes to the point where you can’t afford to fill up your vehicle. These two restrictions alone would be enough to kill ICE ownership for most people. They may also offer financial incentives to switch to an EV. We are the Borg…resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. I hope I am wrong, but suspect I am not. ICE vehicles will still be built for another decade or two. It will take a long time before most of these vehicles are off the road. We grumpy old farts will be dead before the doomsday scenario occurs. The change won’t happen all at once…think the proverbial frog sitting in a pot of gradually heating water. And who knows, perhaps in the fullness of time, EVs will be good enough to satisfy even Mr. Peters.

A higher gas tax wouldn’t be as bad as what I think they would really like: a “mileage tax”. The gas pumps will only work by plugging in the pump to (or scanning) the GPS mileage reader they’ll require on vehicles – both new and old. The argument is that electric vehicles don’t pay their fair share of road maintenance costs. The real reason is so that they can see everywhere you go (even if you leave your phone at home).

Of course, that’s just until they outlaw all privately-owned transportation entirely.

Here in British Communista our only choice for auto insurance is the govt insurance. They started asking for mileage when you renew your insurance and you get a ‘discount’ for lower mileages. Its conditioning. When I tell the agent its none of their business what my mileage is they always seemed shocked I don’t want the ten bucks off my insurance.

It seems that businesses and banks are asking, for now, probing questions about how much, where’d you get this etc… I cashed in some items in the summer for 5K and the teller asked me where I got the money. Told her the same as I tell the insurance agent or anyone else asking , nonya biz…

I couldn’t find a manual transmission that was any cheaper…even though the automatic adds 4k.
