Not wanting to argue, but transmission from contaminated surfaces is rare to nonexistent. The whole wash-your-hands mantra is no more or less true than it was 100 years ago, Mr. Semmelweis.
Wash your hands after you take a dump. Wash them before you are performing open heart surgery. And also wash them before you eat your couscous Maroccan-style, with your hands. Or a pizza, if you prefer. Other than that, there is no need to wash your hands after you pet your dog, touch your cat, choke your chicken (got that one from Stucky, thanks. And we don’t even own any poultry) or touch a doorknob of Wally World.

I would add envelope viruses are quite fragile and RNA also is destroyed by UV (open air). Transmission by surfaces is questionable, but possible. Other viruses you need to wash your hands for, but I do it regardless if in the winter out in public.

Enveloped viruses have a protective lipid layer that when dissolved by a soap’s saponifier will no longer protect the virus. Of all the recommendations it seems the “wash your hands” could have some value; at least it probably does not hurt. Masks, on the other hand……..
