You have a point… my only experiences with the Cold War were deployments to NATO to fly surveillance missions close enough to the Russians conducting war games in East Germany to get a good dose of jamming from the Mainstay, which is/was Russia’s version of AWACS.
We went shopping a lot and drank good beer when we weren’t flying.
And, of course, Iceland deployments where we tracked all the Soviet traffic from the USSR to Cuba. It really was a silly ass game and one very cynical Flight Engineer I knew (Robbie!) said it would save a lot of trouble if the Russians would just tell us what tail numbers they were sending to Cuba and we could tell them which E-3 AWACS plane was on alert.
The biggest “tell” that it was probably just a big game was when the Soviets were playing war games in the North Sea. We were countering with our own little fighters on CAP when our fighters had to return to Iceland due to a big storm.
The Soviet fighters too far from home were given permission to land at Keflavik NAS, had dinner in the chow hall and were provided rooms to rest until the storm cleared.
“I have seen the enemy. In fact, I had dinner with him in the chow hall.”
I wasn’t there in Iceland (yet) but was a member of the replacement crew the following week. My friend told me about the weird landings there… they stayed only long enough for the storm to clear and kept their own people guarding their jets and our sky cops guarding them.
My friend was told to not talk about it, but he did. He actually took pictures.
The exercise continued and I was on a crew out there tracking them the next week.
It was 1989 and we were beginning to think it was all just a big game to too many people we knew in positions of power where they should not be.
Lots of things like that lend credence to your theory.

Any exchange of nuclear weapons at any level of tons, tactical or strategic, will break MAD. It boggles my mind that we live a world where these weapons even exist because it spells permanent extinction of the human species if used. Just like Doritos, you can’t stop with just one. It seems like a lot. An American trident submarine holds around 20 nuclear missiles with about 4 warheads per missile so that’s 80 right there. Russian nuclear missile subs were always said to hold more missiles than that so it’s possible.

Take this from an old submariner: The bigger the sub, the bigger the sonar signature. This thing is too big to hide, and remaining undetected is a subs only defense, since once it is detected, it is almost always killed. Have to kill it BEFORE it launches it’s payload though. The vast majority of subs killed in the next war will be killed by helicopters.

Our ASW always sucked against subs I was on. The P3s asked us to come to PD and raise all of our masts to help a brother out. My skipper on one sub used our signal ejector to fire a red smoke up on the deck of a carrier to prove that they were sunk.
Unfortunately, they would never nuke the cities that are destroying the United States – especially DC. They’re smart enough to not interrupt their enemy while we are being destroyed from within.
