Now we’re getting somewhere, and yes your first sentence is pretty much what I mean.
This is an old, if not ancient, problem of western theology – but if bad things happen, and God is good and omnipotent, then why? There are several possible answers depending on what you’re willing to consider:
-God isn’t good, as we think of it.
-God isn’t omnipotent.
-Somehow all our suffering is still the best possible situation (Candide theory).
-God doesn’t exist, life and existence is random, and shit happens.
Of those four, #4 is logically attractive but extremely depressing and nihilistic. #3 is by far the most optimistic, yet hard to accept and not exactly roses either.
Not the first one to have these thoughts, AFAIK.
Despite this serious problem, and several others, I have come to believe in Christianity. Of all the religions I’m aware of, it has, to me, the greatest combination of plausibility and hopefulness. A full discussion would run many pages, and I am NOT Reverse Engineer.
Just for your fun, Stucky, I’ll toss in a few ideas I have that may be less common. Consider the possibility that the moral guidance in the bible is accurate, or at least somewhat accurate, but that not all the people you encounter in daily life are truly what they seem to be. You can consider this under:
–NPC Theory, where our society includes some minority proportion of fully functioning humans with souls and intelligence, and some large proportion of people who are “NPCs” with little depth or independence. The NPCs may exist for divine reasons, or as some ironically hilarious incident to the existence of our Universe.
–Truman Show theory, where it just might be that you alone (or I alone, or whatever) are living in an artificial reality for some purpose. In the Truman Show, the purpose was entertainment. I consider the possibility that the purpose is really some sort of education or training for a later existence in some different plane of existence. (This also loosely relates to Dead Internet Theory.)
–Prison Planet theory, which can be taken either religiously (Earth is actually hell, or at least purgatory) or in a non-religious sci-fi approach (Earth is a mental institution for life forms that aren’t fit for the rest of the Universe).
Add solipsism=only the mind is known to exist. Anything of the outside world and other minds might not exist outside of your own mind.

I remember being in high school and knowing a girl who had an abortion. The public school counselor helped her with the logistics and getting to a facility to perform the abortion. She was advised not to tell her parents. They never knew about it (at least not when it happened). I kept in touch with her after high school and she DEEPLY regretted it. Very sad.
Pretty sick knowing that’s what your tax dollars go to. At the time, I never told *my* parents about that situation because I KNEW my dad would have gone ape-shit & they would have yanked me out of school in a heartbeat…and I didn’t want that to happen, because – friends.
Working with teens now, I’m often viewed not only as their teacher, but as a friend and confidant. They often text & call me and share their problems. Sometimes it gets really hard not to betray their trust and go straight to their parents. When necessary, I always tell them they MUST discuss their problems with their parents and trust that they’ll have their best interests at heart. Not easy sometimes, especially with all the crap these kids have to deal with in today’s world.
Lastly … cuz I’ve already made too many new enemies …. but, answer me this; where does consciousness reside? Almost everyone would say the brain/mind.
As such, and this is my fervent belief (i.e.; not flinging shit), that until that first brain cell comes into existence then, indeed, all you really have is a clump of cells.
By your logic a child wouldn’t exist until it starts talking. Which would mean they wouldn’t be alive until they learned a language. Most of the time while children are talking and know words they’re not consciously having thoughts or opinions. They’re usually just babbling sounds and repeating/mimicking what they hear in their environment. The mind doesn’t start to develop until around the age of 7 years old.

While consciousness is a defining human attribute it doesn’t define life itself. There’s plenty of life forms on Earth have no consciousness at all. Also, consciousness itself is subjective because different animals have shown various forms of consciousness.
I think it is being conscious of being conscious that humans experience and that animals do not.
As for all the mayhem here on earth that seems undeserved, it exists precisely according to karma, and karma exists so that humans after countless lifetimes will one day perfect themselves and become as what the Bible describes “when two becomes one” as in the Garden. Interesting discussion. But I would argue that consciousness dwells in Soul. When my daughter was born, I go to experience the breath of life. She looked like a lifeless mass until she took that first breath. She went from gray to pink, and then she smiled, and the master whispered in my ear. The breath of life as Gods love flowed through us. She was not consciousness till that breath, Gods love, flowed through her.
Many mothers say they can experience their child’s personality/temperament in the womb. You’re describing her breathing through her own lunges for the first time and your first experiences with her. Her mother already experienced various characteristics unique to her before she was born.
Yes, Soul lingers around the body before it is born, and yes Moms can feel it. But it is not attached to the body until the breath. I have read about this in many different books. The bible confirms this and refers to it as the breath of life.
Notice I did not say my Soul, or her Soul. This refers to I am Soul with a body. Not a body with a Soul which is wrong.

Then she has her own memories of the beginning of her own self-consciousness. My point is you’re describing only one perspective of the beginning of her consciousness.

Stucky, the first neural cells that will later form the brain are differentiated by gestational week 3, approximately the same time that the precursor cells of the heart form. Most abortions happen after week 3, since the pregnancy is not even noticed until then. Is consciousness present at week 3? Or at week 9, when a round smooth structure is noticeable as a brain? Or whenever it is that you feel pain? When do fetuses begin to feel pain?
By the way, I do not think consciousness resides in the brain or anywhere else within the cells that make up your body. I say that because of or despite being a scholar of the human body. It doesn’t mean that killing the body at any age can ever be taken lightly.
I have heard/read this concept many times. But, I just can’t get my head around it.
So, where does it reside? (Quick answer is OK … and, no, not trying to stir the pot.)
I hope you are correct. Because if consciousness does reside within the cells of our body, then when a person dies and rots then that is truly the end of that person.
Conversely, if consciousness is not “in the cells” then when that person croaks, obviously he/she is still, well, …. somewhere. Gives me some hope of “seeing” that person again.
If you consider that souls exist, and exist independently of the body, then perhaps they are standing by and get loaded into a fetus at some specific point in time – OR they take months and months to load, and get gradually loaded in as the fetus develops a brain, or whatever it is that the soul needs.
I have no hard answers for any of this. But I am inclined to think that souls do exist, and that a fetus and an infant gradually develop consciousness. I doubt there is any real consciousness at the stage of 1, 2, or 4 cells. But where it starts after that, I don’t know. Some people can reach their 20’s without it, so it seems.
Gradual download does not make sense to me. If this experience is a test and a conscious choice that we have all made to have an experience in a mortal body here, then an erased memory would be crucial. Otherwise, if you knew it was just a temporary adventure, would you learn the same things? I think that the soul gets implemented into the body at conception all at once. After that, you are on your own (with God by your side). Well, with your Mom at first, who bears you and the responsibility for you in the beginning.
Consciousness resides in Soul. No, you will never see your physical body again. But as Soul, you are immortal. Did you ever have a very vivid dream or came back from your sleep with a jerk. This was your consciousness separating itself from the body. People who have physically died and then survived have written many books about this. We do get to see our loved ones when we pass on. But not in their physical body.
We experience our loved ones at the different levels of consciousness. Astral-emotional, casual/ memory, mental/mind, etheric/subconscious, or Soul which is just pure energy, light and sound and has no body. These are also the levels of heaven or the many mansions that Jesus talked about. Remember the kingdom of heaven is within you.
I have studied and practiced about consciousness for over 40 years. It’s a real science and the science is called Eckankar, which means coworker with God. Eckankar has been taught by the Vairagi adepts since the dawn of time. Jesus, Buddha, Pythagoras, Saint Francis, Socrates, Saint Paul, Milarepa, and many others taught what they knew of Eckankar to the world. It’s all about consciousness.

As I have written before; I am adopted. I only have non-identifying information on my birth mother and nothing on my biological father. I contend that if Roe v. Wade had been the law in 1950 there is a good possibility that my “cellular blob” would have wound up in a trash can. I may never know who “mom” was but thank God she didn’t kill me. The numbers of abortions have been declining for decades, and are heavily concentrated in two minority groups. The white college types who scream so loudly about how it’s a fundamental right are not generally the major users of baby murder, and from what I’ve seen they are composed mostly of militant lesbians, who shouldn’t have any reason to seek abortions, and far-left yuppie women who use birth control and often have a couple kids on purpose, often with some rather neutered but technically male “partner.”
Abortion was pushed a century ago for racial eugenics, and it’s really ironic to look at which politicians are so loud in support. The same ones whose potential voters, by demographics, are being eliminated before birth.

I’ve been attacked by pro abortion radicals who clearly hate themselves but support pedo s rights. But I am also in favor of my body my choice, so there’s that. Stucky- rt.com comes in but there is a DOD guard on it. Sputnik is ok also.
RT coms right in but sputnik has always had an overload problem with their server. During peak times I can’t get them.
