Concerns Over Egg Shortages Grow

By Allan Stein of The Epoch Times

Concerns over potential shortages of eggs nationwide are growing due to inflation and supply chain issues made worse by avian flu.

“Like many sectors of the economy, egg farming is impacted by inflation and experiencing some limited supply chain challenges due to a variety of factors,” the American Egg Board (AEB) said in a May 24 statement in response to an Epoch Times inquiry.

Chickens gather around a feeder at a farm in Osage, Iowa

The AEB was created by an act of Congress in 1976 at the request of egg farmers as a way to pool resources for national-level marketing.

Regarding avian flu, the AEB said, “It is important to note that less than 5 percent of commercial layer flocks have been impacted by avian influenza and those farms affected are working with state and federal agency partners to safely resume operations.

“Our farmers continue to work diligently to ensure that Americans nationwide have consistent access to their favorite protein: the incredible egg.”

At Frye’s Market in Cottonwood, Arizona, for example, the shelves appeared about half full on May 20.

The egg shelves were about half full at Frye’s Market in Cotton, Ariz., on May 23. The American Egg Bureau says avian flu has cut into about 5 percent of egg production. (Allan Stein/The Epoch Times)

This week, a dozen Happy Egg free-range grade-A large brown eggs sold for $4.99. The price of Kroger grade A and AA large eggs was $4.39.

The situation wasn’t much different at Cottonwood’s Safeway on May 23, where a stock clerk attributed empty shelves to the increasing demand for eggs and lagging deliveries.

According to the USDA’s April 29 monthly Cage-Free Shell Egg Report, the average price range for a carton of eggs was between $1.15 and $2.79.

The report based weekly egg production on monthly flock size estimates, which totaled 18.1 million in April at an estimated lay rate of 84.5 percent for 30-dozen cases of organic eggs.

Non-organic egg layers total 90.5 million birds at a weekly production rate of nearly 1.5 million cases of 30-dozen eggs.

More than 36 million chickens and turkeys have been euthanized since highly infectious avian flu was first detected in the United States in January.

On April 20, the egg board said America’s farmers have been working “around the clock” to keep their products affordable and grocery stores stocked.

“It’s important to know that farmers don’t usually get to choose the price of their eggs. Eggs are priced on the commodity market, like corn and wheat. Temporary increases in egg prices reflect many factors,” the AEB said.

“Like many sectors of the economy, egg farming is being impacted by inflation and experiencing supply chain challenges related to increases in cost and availability of feed and grain, labor and transportation.

“Recent cases of bird flu have created additional strains on supply in limited situations,” the organization added.

Inflation? Seriously?

Er, could the ‘culling’ of a few million hens have … something to do with the shortage (and therefore a rise in price of what remains)?

“supply chain issues made worse by avian flu”

God give me strength! So killing off (unnecessarily due to a panic, knee-jerk reaction by incompetent idiots) the majority of the laying flocks is … a supply chain issue now?

Technically I suppose it is (if you’re really into torturing language until it squeals), but only if you’re …. (I was going to use a farcical metaphor but I honestly can’t think of anything more asinine than the actual example they’re using).

I want to get off this clown ride and go back to when there were the occasional adult in charge of … well, anything.

I wonder what knuckleheads sit on the American Egg Board. There must be a dozen jokes and puns that one can come up with when it comes to this topic, but I cannot think of on right now.

Those are meat birds in the top photo, not layers.

The American Egg Board. You can’t make this stuff up.

How does working 24 hours a day change production? How can the Egg Board not understand how chickens operate?

Serious question: how long does it take for an egg to become a layer?

Iska, these new egg laying machines they call chickens might start at 4 months but as a kid the average hen started between 5 and 9 months depending on breed and size.

I refuse to eat battery eggs only because I don’t find fried snott appetizing.

Chickens lay from around 6 months to around two years well. Then start dropping off pretty fast. Egg chickens are easy to care for, and you can get around 20 dozen a year from a good layer – like an Isa Brown. Or you can raise combo birds like the Rhode Island reds (watch out for the roosters as they can be mean as shit).

Plymouth Rocks for my money are the best at rustling most of their own grub in good weather and giving lots of large brown eggs and roosters with a good carcass at 4-5 months. And the roosters are pretty tame and the hens will go broody which will be worth a lot when the grid goes down.

You are welcome. Look at a bunch of youtubes on maggot farms. I just grabbed the first one that came up.

Plenty of designs out there but they all work if they have the basics. Holes at the top for flies to get in, small holes at the bottom for maggots to get out.

And BTW, you can feed these almost anything organic and the flies will do the work. Kitchen scraps, mice, squirrels, roadkill, government agents…… Just make sure not to use anything that was killed by poison, obviously.

Chickens are the ultimate SHTF protein converters. They turn stuff you would not eat into tasty eggs and meat. Everyone should have a flock.

We have a chicken tractor that gets drug through our yard, moving every day or two. They get to eat grass, weeds, bugs and whatever. We also no longer compost as our chickens turn all our food scraps into eggs. They get a small amount, maybe a red solo cup, of locally sourced layer pellets.

We have 2 batches of hens that are 3 to 5 years old, the oldest maybe more, and they still lay an egg almost every day.

A big % is their ground up ancestors commercially, can’t blame You. i think a flaxseed heavy diet produces the ‘enhanced in whatever’ eggs. Cut down and shred the comfrey in sections now on a regular basis with a weedeater, trying to encourage root development, higher cocentrations. Use to dry the leaves and make the prettiest shade of green salve, rich in Allantoin. Neighbor lady wanted to know if she could have some for her turkeys, chickens, and ducks. Who Knew?

Not sure the animals ever visited the FDA, et al. websites…Cancer Risk!!!
Synthetic Allantoin is in a host of products in high %’s.

Historically, one of the most documented medicinal plants prepared in a variety of ways/multiple uses.

‘Water Glass’? used most successfully to destroy a large % of the motors in the federally subsidized high-end model ‘trade-in’ program…’Cash for clunkers’. Couldn’t very well smuggle too many and flood the market in various 3rd world dictatorships and drive the price there down now could ‘WE’? Where’s the ‘status symbol’ in that?

Thank You for the link, quick read that made me think of the ‘ultimate’ in whole egg storage, just ignore the alleged overriding ammonia odor, supposed to be a delicacy according Anjew zimmern.

When folks buy my eggs they ask if they should refrigerate them. I tell them if they refrigerate them, they need to use them within a couple weeks.

It sounds good and guarantees me a sale in a couple weeks.

When God was handing out ‘mechanical skills’ I thought He had said who wants ‘messy frills’…so I said NOT ME!

Anyway, I paid him with three dozen eggs and two giant (15 inch) Groundhog Daikon Jap Radishes.

The transmission drive belt had to be replaced on our Husqvarna RZ5426 zero turn. I’ve never been a great mechanic myself outside of routine maintenance. Youtube can be a wonderful thing sometimes. It took me all winter to get my ass in gear and get ‘er done. Did so with the help of a youtube vid in time to start spring mowing. At this stage of life and $$ I have to figure things out when it comes to repairs. Have a regular riding mower I’m getting ready to replace the trans belt on as it is shot and I’m surprised it has not failed. Essentially the same procedure as the zero.

Ya didn’t state what Your issue was, but if it was a ‘won’t crank/blades won’t engage’, Most likely some hardware had vibrated loose at the pivot point of the ‘arms’, not allowing the plunger safety interlock switches to ‘make’ when they are supposed to, fairly ‘tight’ tolerances. maybe the one under the seat, more likely to be the one on the emergency brake. Switches are VERY robust. Most mfgs. have excellent web sites with complete owners manuals and general trouble shooting guidelines, schematics depicting fuse locations, etc. TONS of selfless individuals on Utube as well…Be forewarned that some of them are ‘technically challenged’/actually DANGEROUS. check out a few to at least gain consensus. Oil/ grease locations and frequency as well. Hydrostatic fluid/filter(s) changes demonstrably critical as well, unless you have a ‘sealed unit’.

Live in the NW or Blue Ridge area? Wasabi won’t grow well here.

Migratory birds spread diseases from continent to continent; that became evident in 1918 with the Spanish Flu. That is why TPTB protect them.
