Three men have been arrested in connection to the killing of a teenager outside LeBron James-founded Ohio high school in early June, federal authorities announced Saturday.
Ethan Liming, 17, was found beaten to death on June 2 in the parking lot of I Promise School in Akron.
In a press release, the US Marshals Service revealed that the federal entity’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and Akron Police on Saturday morning arrested Deshawn Stafford Jr., 20, Tyler Stafford, 19 and Donovon Jones, 21, at two different residential buildings in Akron.
Liming was brutally beaten to death at around 10:46 p.m. on June 2. Authorities have said the teen died from blunt force trauma to the head after he drove around with his friends and shot a water gun at people.
Liming was lying on the ground in the parking lot when police arrived, officials have said. They were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I am happy to report that today, officers with the Akron Police Department, made several arrests in connection with the death of Ethan Liming. We thank the members of the community for their outpouring of support that helped investigators throughout this investigation,” said Akron Police Chief Stephen Mylett in the news release.
“While I believe the news of the arrests will be welcomed by Ethan’s family and loved ones, we all recognize that nothing will bring Ethan back,” he added. “Violence in this country must stop. We are losing too many lives to senseless acts of violence.”
Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said that Liming’s “senseless and tragic death has touched every person in our community.”
“My thoughts and prayers remain with the entire Liming family at this time,” he said.
“This crime impacted an entire community and we stand alongside the community in seeking justice for Ethan,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a statement.
Police said “that in the moments leading up to the incident, one or more occupants in the [Liming]’s vehicle were riding around the surrounding area shooting a SPLATRBALL Water Bead Blaster at objects and possibly unsuspecting people,” according to a statement cited by Fox News.
They then drove to the basketball courts, where the group of teens “targeted or approached the subjects who were on the court and fired the gel soft gun at them,” in an incident that apparently provoked the killers.
On Thursday, police offered a reward of up to $30,000 for information leading to the arrest of Liming’s killers, according to a local report.
Liming’s father, Bill, told Fox News in a story published Friday that his son was a loving and charitable person with a “bright future” ahead. Liming’s father said that his son planned on becoming a lawyer.

That is a little dark for my liking. Maybe parents could have exercised a bit of judgement about that, too.
No, the kid didn’t deserve to die. But there was some very poor judgement exhibited, and poor judgement leads to bad outcomes.
My father always taught me from a very young age that if you avoid bad situations (being around blacks) and bad places (Akron for instance), odds were good you would stay out of trouble. Why parents don’t teach their kids such a valuable and simple lesson is unfathomable.

I do not understand the world. The white kid and the kids he was with started some trouble. Horseplay some have called it. Horseplay often leads to trouble. In this case, it did. And I do not have a lot of sympathy for the victim. Yes, it went overboard, but since when is it ok to harass someone who is minding their own business? And the people they chose to harass were from a demographic known to be violent, retaliatory, and with little or no impulse control. Stupid behaviour has consequences.
Can society allow people to go around shooting each other with SplatRBall guns? What if someone wanted to follow you 24/7 zapping you with the damn things? Clearly, that cannot be allowed. But we all know, the legal system wants no part of such. They do not want to police, prosecute, or penalize these things. These kids with the SplatRBall guns would face zero penalty if the people being shot at had reported the incident. None. I doubt any investigation or enforcement effort would have been done.
In my opinion, citizens need to be able to police this stuff themselves. Without fear of being prosecuted. In this case, in my opinion black eye, bloody nose, split lip seems to be about right for screwing with someone minding their own business. These gel guns apparently sting similar to someone snapping you with a rubber band. How would you take it if someone came up and started snapping you with a rubber band? I know how I would take it today, and I know how I would have taken it when I was 20. If earlier in these kids’ lives someone had cuffed them good and proper around the ear for horseplay, maybe they would have learned enough to avoid the behaviour and situation they ultimately put themselves in.
There is a risk that when delivering a black eye, something more severe occurs. It happens pretty often. That is a risk that would need to be borne to keep a civil society. I am not suggesting that stomping on the kid’s head should be allowed, but if in the course of deterring this kind of “horseplay”, things go bad, then some type of stand your ground laws should come into play.
Society is protecting a lot of antisocial behaviour, by not allowing citizens to self police bad behaviour and it is not ending well. Peaceful society has come steadily under attack as it is well known that there will be no repercussions for antisocial behaviour.

The guns are water gel pellets. 200 feet per second. Paintball is 300 feet per second and much larger pellets. The gel pellets sting a bit as it is said. Can’t attest personally. 136 mph is not inconsequential. If hit in the eye, it could be troublesome.
That said, even getting harassed with water pistols will piss you off. Or at least me. I don’t need someone screwing with me in any way. And I tend to react aggressively when it happens. And there should be a penalty extracted if someone screws with another, especially unprovoked. A punch in the nose tends to sort those assholes out. But society frowns on it.
Hey, I screwed around plenty. But when caught, and when my ass got beat, I didn’t run crying to anyone. I knew what I was doing, and I knew the risks.
