I made the trip to the Amish village again this morning after my visit with the Veterans Administration psychiatric/psychological practictioner who prescribes me Cymbalta for both mood issues and back pain. Since it seems to help with the anxiety (and the voices) and definitely with the lumbar strain and sciatica, I check in twice a month with the VA and they send me medicine in the mail.
Yesterday, I got a call from the scheduler telling me they’d changed my provider, but the visit would be same place/same time in Farmington. The psych nurse introduced himself and proceeded to ask me in three different ways if I wanted to kill myself or was thinking about it. (Well, I wasn’t until now, I wanted to say, but I suspect he would NOT have laughed.) He then asked me if I were comfortable answering some new “relationship” questions. Out of curiosity, I said, “Well, you ask and I’ll tell you if I am uncomfortable.” I was actually a bit shocked: Has your partner ever hit you? Has your partner insulted you? Has your partner sexually abused you? And, then, it got uncomfortable.
What the hell? The technician was embarrassed but said the questions are for those few people who might need the prompt to ask for help.
Really? Some middle aged former military guy taking blood pressure and temperature for a video consult with a psych provider for the VA makes who want to confide that sort of thing? I simply said “no” until he stopped asking me the questions and took me to the video conference room where I sat down to confer with my new “doctor” via telecommunications.
The new therapist/whatever is German or Dutch, I think, with blond hair braided on the temples. She asked me to tell her my history. I wanted to say “For God’s sake, didn’t you read my chart?”

She listened to my story in wonder because it really is quite an interesting one, physically, surgically, surviveability-wise and even, to some degree, spiritually. And since I could see she intended to try and help me when all I really want are the meds and no other “help” that might make me sick, I decided to give her the best rambling story I could come up with.
At the end of that ramble, I prompted her to ask me anything she wanted to know and guess what? She asked me if I wanted to harm myself three different ways and asked me the relationship questions, slightly rephrased.
I stopped by the Farm Store to check on the status of the Amish bunnies I took in Saturday and headed for the Amish market to put in my order for peaches.
Then, from there, I headed to by Bunny Contact in the community and I managed to pull into the Shirks (interesting name for such industrious people) little maple grove just in time for midday meal. Titus came out to wave me onto the porch, where I spoke to the family and stated my business. The first time I visited during a meal, I waited outside on the lawn until noon meal was finished. I’ve moved up a notch to porch.
Am going to hire Titus to make a hutch for my giants. He is going to consider the hutch I want and give me a price via US mail.
It is like driving into the 1800s.
I walked out to the rabbit hutches before I drove away and the ginormous horse teams were in the shade behind the outbuildings. The little wagons for the children and their ponies are arranged neatly under a shelf with everything cleaned and dried. A place for everything that makes sense for everyone.
