I don’t look in the mirror with my glasses on until AFTER coffee.

Interesting that the first instinct was to get behind the non existent opponent and bite him in the ass…repeatedly. The neurons were definitely firing at peak efficiency.

I’ve got to say that seeing panic in animals you’d normally be afraid of is pretty damned funny. Same is true of people, now that I think about it.

I’ve had 3 wild bear encounters while hunting other game with a bow.
2 black bears fled in terror, one griz charged me and if not for a large willow thicket
and their inherently poor eyesight, I would have been in real trouble.

Allegedly, one effective strategy is to run. Downhill?

Always in the back of my mind in Canada where you were not ‘permitted’ to have a firearm. Always made sure that i could outrun my companion.

Running is generally a recipe for a vicious attack.
Grizzly bears are programed to chase and kill anything fleeing them.
You should stand your ground and hope the bear is one of the 90%
who stop charging when you don’t run. That takes enormous balls. 10% will attack you no matter what you do.
I had a weapon specifically for a grizzly bear attack ( I was hunting caribou
in central Alaska with a bow. An M1 A1 .30 carbine with a 30 round mag.) It was on my pack but I put it down to walk the distance
from where I was going to shoot my bow to where I expected the caribou to come around
the willow thicket. As I paced off the distance, I came around the thicket and the bear
saw me and charged from about 40 yards. I whirled back into the thicket and he didn’t
pursue me when he couldn’t find me. It was a fairly young bear and didn’t know I was human. He just chased something big that he saw appear. He wandered off after a few minutes and I almost threw up from the adrenalin overload.
I killed a really nice rocking chair caribou there about 4 hours later. I had the M1 A1 right next to me then!. It was raining all the while. The next day, going back for the rest of the meat, I ran into two hunters (the only ones I saw in 10 days) who watched it all happen through their binoculars a ridge away and they said, “We saw the bear coming to where you were and thought you were dead, man.” Me too. I saw 11 grizzly bears on that hunt. Good times.

Don’t you carry a large caliber pistol when you hunt? I’ve never hunted with a bow but I still always have my Sig. Never have run into a bear, that’s gotta put the starch in someone.
