In fact, it was almost impossible for people to understand this type of communication in anything but spiritual terms. Even the word “medium” evokes the specter of contact with the spirit world…

The funny thing is that Asimov is one of the least intellectual authors. I even like a few of his books but the guy was a huge pretender.

Will the college and pro football coaches get a substantial raise considering how much they have endured?
We humans have been dealing with the phenomenon of verbal lying for at least 100,000 years. We are hardwired to understand that when someone tells us something, it may or may not be true. But it is only in the last half century or so that we have faced the issue of visual lying. For all the previous history of our species, if we SAW something it was true. Not any longer. We SEE lies everyday — and some ancient part of our mind BELIEVES what we see.
If we are aware, we can at least partly counteract the automatic visual belief mechanism. But only if we work at it and keep our rational analysis turned to maximum.
What about the Written Word lying to us? It isn’t much older than modern media in the grand scheme. I for one was always a believer in what I read. I mean, if someone bothered to write it in a book, it must have value, right? Maybe seeing text means seeing is believing.
Of course, I was gullible face to face, so maybe it’s just my own minor ’tism.
