SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
nkit, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Harry Nilsson – Everybody’s Talkin’ (1968)

Brilliant Steve C and nkit – thank you and well done and I have it playing as I battle to get the critical information out there:

““Music speaks the language of the soul, penetrating into the past and resonating into the future, unearthing pain and tenderness and sorrow and joy, reminding us of our infinite fragility and extraordinary strength, reigniting our dreams and passions once again to remind us of who we are meant to be.”

May you go well to bring an aura of peace and serenity to our troubled TBP family!

That’s where I’m going as soon as I can – SOUTH – it’s my song of escape!!

Alexei Sultanov Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto № 2 1st mov. 1989

Today, I’d like to feature Alexei Sultanov (8/7/69 – 6/30/2005). Sultanov was a Soviet-born American classical pianist. Sultanov was born to a family of musicians, his father a cellist, his mother a violinist, both music teachers. Alexei began piano lessons at age 6. He became famous after winning the Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at the age of 19.

In 1996 he suffered what would be the beginning of a series of strokes that eventually led to his death at the age of 35.

We’ll begin with Mr. Sultanov performing Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2, 1st Movement in 1989.

Alexei Sultanov – Chopin Ballade No.4 f moll, ор. 52

Next, he performs Chopin Ballad No.4 f moll,Op52.

Alexei Sultanov performs Chopin’s Nocturne Op.48 №1

We’ll follow that with Sultanov performing another Chopin piece – His Nocturne Op 48 No.1

Alexei Sultanov plays Prokofiev – Piano Sonata No. 7 (Moscow, 1998)

We’ll conclude with Sultanov playing Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No.7 in Moscow (1998).

I hope you have enjoyed the talent of Alexei Sultanov.

Have a great Sunday.

About six miles from Maastricht, in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301 American soldiers who died in “Operation Market Garden” in the battles to liberate Holland in the fall/winter of 1944. Every one of the men buried in the cemetery, as well as those in the Canadian and British military cemeteries, has been adopted by a Dutch family who minds the grave, decorates it, and keeps alive the memory of the soldier they have adopted. It is even the custom to keep a portrait of “their” soldier in a place of honor in their home. Annually, on “Liberation Day,” memorial services are held for “the men who died to liberate Holland.” The day concludes with a concert. The final piece is always “Il Silenzio,” a memorial piece commissioned by the Dutch and first played in 1965 on the 20th anniversary of Holland’s liberation. It has been the concluding piece of the memorial concert ever since.

This year, the soloist was a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Melissa Venema, backed by André Rieu and his orchestra ( the Royal Orchestra of the Netherlands ). This beautiful concert piece is based upon the original version of taps and was composed by Italian composer, Nino Rossi.

Looks like a great lineup. For my money “Ein Deutsches Requiem” was the best thing Brahms ever wrote, but your mileage my vary.

I like all contributions here on this crisp Autumn morn in the northern hemisphere,
so Grazie!
Special kudos to the Don, though, for his alluring videos of the beautiful women
playing modern classical instruments. Stunning.

Steve, I hope to have a submittal of a couple of 3rd movements from concertos to you soon.
Stay tuned to your email, kind Sir.

Thank you Steve & nkit – what a joy to hear that wonderful refrain: “I’m going where the sun keeps shining and where the weather suits my clothes!” I surely am – when my mission here is done according to the BIG MAN who commands my life course.

I am sitting in my little office, tapping away on the next ‘Letter’, with tears in my eyes as I feel the warm south wind in our unusually mild autumn. But it’s no substitute for the real thing down in Cape Town. I guess we all have our burden to carry – for some it’s really tough but for me – there is joy in an old man’s heart when he hears those melodious rhythms from the long distant past.

Go well guys 🙂

AND not forgetting our stalwart TBPer, Flea (or Frank to his comrades) – I was sorry to hear of his passing especially as we emailed each other and I was glad for his wisdom. Sadly missed.

Perhaps Woodstock might bring back memories of those days? On this Remembrance Day perhaps we should reflect on those that came back in a box because the government said so. Never again guys – stand up and be counted -even if TPTB vilify you like they did to us Anti-Vaxxers – now proven to be the enlightened ones. And these evil fuckers are asking for amnesty? What? All is forgiven and we all go back to ‘normal’? Ain’t gonna happen to this old soldier – I’ll see them dead first!

Thank you gentlemen. as always your selections brighten my morning and make me smile. The 1812 made me think of what might be a fun subject. The best use of a classical piece in a movie, I mean there will be a ton of them but we all have to have favorites. Here are two of mine.

and a nice use of the 9th
