We were moving bookcases this weekend, consolidating the library and I cam across a book a neighbor gave me as a gift not long after we moved here entitled New Hampshire Agriculture: 1878
I started reading it this morning and let me tell you, for a book written for 19th century New England farmers it is remarkably dense and nigh on impenetrable. I cannot imagine someone without a deep love of the language and a very broad understanding of the natural world would get much more than a page or two before calling it quits. The average college graduate would be overwhelmed by the wide variety of topics and the depth into which the author is able to delve.
It made me sad to think about just how much we have lost, both intellectually as well as general fitness as a species.
