Off topic: I call it: THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
One of our cats is dying. She is 18 years old and we adopted her 9 years ago when she was posted online because her elderly owner passed away the day before. When I picked her up, it was a really morbid situation: I entered the house and the children of the old lady, who wasn’t even in the ground yet, were already half done cleaning out the house and were planning to put up the house for sale asap. I think I did them and the cat a favor by taking it home. She then promptly proceeded to hide behind our couch for a full 4 weeks, only to emerge in the middle of the night to eat and use the litter box. I thought that we adopted a permanent behind-the-couch cat. After a month, she came out and is now a very affectionate lap cat. At first, she put the children in their places and lashed out a few times when they would be too rough with her, but that hasn’t happened in years, probably because of mutual understanding of each other’s preferences.
About 4 weeks ago, I noticed that she had gotten extremely thin. She refused to eat dry food. So I started to feed her only canned food. Then, she developed diarrhea and got progressively weaker. I put the litter box into our bathroom on the same floor, because she could not walk down the stairs to the litter box any more. In the last few days, we have carried her to the litter box. She can barely walk or hold up her head. Today, she started to refuse all food. She is sleeping 23 hours out of 24. Our son spent all morning holding her and crying, because it is visible and palpable for everybody to see where this is heading. We talked about where we will bury her and which cardboard box to use as a coffin. The children all have been crying on and off for days, and visiting her comfy bed in the kitchen often to pet her and whisper in her ear how much they love her.
Some of you might think it is time to get to a vet and shove a needle up her leg and put her to sleep. Certainly, that would be more convenient, and it would spare the children the trauma of possibly finding her dead in the morning. It would be a sterile, clean death, but not necessarily a “good death” (=eu thanos). She is not obviously in pain. Just tired. So very tired. And old. We are pampering her until the very last moment and our children have told me that they are thankful for every hour that they still have with her. Plus, I think, for cats especially, a trip to the veterinarian is very frightening and stressful.
(When I was a child, our neighbor had a German Shepherd that was very unpredictable and had bitten their child two times, once in the face. They decided that the dog couldn’t be trusted around people and was dangerous. Instead of the vet doing the deed, a friend of the family took the dog into the woods, attached it to a tree and shot it. Probably the least traumatizing and scary way for the dog, in my opinion)
Of course I am sad about our cat. I am also sad to know that our cat will die surrounded by loved ones and a hand holding her paw as she draws her last breath, while thousands upon thousands of grandmothers, grandfathers, dads, moms, sons and daughters did not get that most fundamental human treatment. They had their dignity taken from them by force. It is unforgivable, and a disgrace.
Today, on the same day, our other cat is in labor. We will joyfully welcome kittens either today or tomorrow.
And so the circle closes.

Indeed. It happened to my 98 year old mother. She was in an assisted living facility for a few years where I visited her every day for breakfast and dinner, before and after my work schedule. I also provided alot of her care that normally would be the responsibility of the care home. Over a period of 22 months I only missed seeing her one day, and I was determined to make her final years as comfortable as possible even though I could no longer care for her at home. For her age she was in remarkably good health and spirit. Then the care home slammed their door in my face when the covid bullshit got revved up, and over the course of the next few months my mother rapidly went downhill and passed, undoubtedly scared and alone, surrounded by apathetic people wearing surgical masks and gowns. Yesterday would have been her 101st birthday, and I’m convinced she would still be alive were it not for the MFers who foisted this bullshit and their legions of brain dead followers. No forgiveness, ever.
