In the last 25-30 years the French have drastically reduced their forces, they have cut out something like 40 regiments. The French army has less than 150,000 men under arms, including reserves. They lost more.men in one day at Verdun, Annnnd their best troops, the 2nd Regiment of the Foreign Legion is in French Guiana.

You remind me of a guy I met before I went to Argentina on a student exchange. He warned me to be careful down there, because “there ain’t nothing but Mexicans in Argentina.”
Argentina, in 1914, had more European immigrants than native-born Argentinians. And, the less-than-half native born population included a plethora of native-born children of immigrants.
Argentine cuisine does not include Chips, Salsa, and Margaritas. It is much closer to a Latin version of Italian cuisine. They do not like spicy food, in general, and even restaurants are not known to offer black pepper. (Though the few Mexican restaurants are extremely popular. They are exotic, not everyday like in the US.)
There is a lot of bread, beef, fresh vegetables, pasta, potatoes, etc. They drink wine, beer, and scotch. I traveled the whole country, and they are distinctly White Hispanic. You’d think many of them were American, except they are not overweight, like us.
It is a beautiful country, with wonderful people, and a completely f’d up government.
I’ve been living in Argentina for nearly twenty years now, waiting for something like this to happen. I believed when I came here that this country could eventually become the final frontier for Western civilization, but a major shake-up would be a necessary precursor.
This is the eighth largest country in the world in terms of land mass, but thinly populated. If one were to exclude the populations of greater Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Rosario (the three largest cities) from the calculation, the population density falls between that of Mongolia (higher) and Libya. Most of the land is in the temperate zone, acquifers accessible with well-drilling (my son, a Texas A & M engineer is in this business), desertified land reclaimable, many natural resources, ripe for enterprising immigrants… But knowing Spanish is a must.
I’ve read the platform of Milei’s party, researched the pros and cons of dollarization, recognize that the country is on its last legs unless sweeping change takes place and openly support the platform if not entirely thrilled by the candidate’s style, although what is shown of him conveniently does not include his calmer interviews. If he were to be assassinated, anything could happen in the aftermath. Hoping against hope that doesn’t happen.
If there´s one thing I’ve learned in my years here, it’s that the place and its people are una caja de sorpresas, literally a “box of surprises”. I have no regrets about choosing to immigrate here, none at all.
