Pie Jesu — which in Latin means “pious Jesus” — is the text from the final couplet of the hymn “Dies irae“, and is often included in musical settings of the Requiem Mass. This version, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, was inspired by two tragedies; 1) a journalist who had interviewed him just weeks before dying in Northern Ireland as a result of the IRA conflict and, 2) the story of a Cambodian boy who was forced to murder his mutilated sister or be executed himself. Webber writes music as a way to cope with and express his grief.
The two most beautiful and talented singers in the known universe (imho) sing this in Latin. The English text is below. The song is about mercy, and also rest for a weary soul. The world needs a lot of things, not the least of which is Mercy.
Give me yourself three minutes. OK? So for the next 3 minutes stop what you are doing, and stop your mind from running rampant, and close your eyes, and quiet your soul, …. and may the Lord of Mercy grant you 3 minutes of peace that passes understanding.
Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus
Father, who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest, grant them rest
Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus
Father, who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest, grant them rest
Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God
Father, who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest, grant them rest
everlasting
everlasting
Rest
THE END
Thanks, Stucky. Needed that.
Amen!
Nothing better than one pretty girl singing, except two. Exquisite.
WOW. Very nice Stuckmeister.
Stuck I saw Requiem performed live about..oh…15,16 years ago.
It moved me beyond words.
And if you read the experiences of some of the Khmer Rouge survivors, it will not only break your heart but give you hope for humanity.
Really sucks compared to Mozart’s.
Thanks Stucky.. the perfect way to end my day
Hi Stuck! Thanks for the post. Good to see ya
Very nicely done by these two young ladies. It brings back memories from several years ago. My daughter was a music major, and served as the choir director for several years in our local Catholic Church. She was instrumental in reintroducing the ‘Novus Ordo” poisoned parishioners to classic Latin Catholic music. When my mother passed away in 2009 she sang this at her funeral.
Thank you, Stucky.
Wow! Very nice. It was very calming and, knowing the lyrics, and the message, very timely in this chaotic world.
Thanks for posting it.
Verdi’s “Requiem” was peformed at The Gaillard Center in Charleston Saturday night.
90 minutes of pure bliss. 200 person choir with soprano, alto, tenor & baritone soloists, all visiting artists of international repute.
DID EVERYONE FORGET WHAT THE “POOP’S” (POPE) SAID ABOUT THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THE MAN CALLED “JESUS”???
QUOTE: “THE MYTH ABOUT JESUS SERVED US WELL”???
GO RESEARCH “CAESAR’S MESSIAH”, TO LEARN ABOUT HOW THIS MYTH WAS CREATED BY THE GREEKS AND ROMANS.
THERE IS “NO SECULAR EVIDENCE” THAT THIS MAN EVER EXISTED…PERIOD FOLKS!
Maybe you’re too numb to have felt him is all.
I suspect it won’t be all that long before you’re in a position to know, Kennyboy
Begone
💯
Stucky, are you still in NJ? Really, get the fuck out. We miss you from back in the day. MTBPGA.
Stucky used to post this GOOD kind of stuff all the time. He has a lot of good and interesting things for us in his mind.
I thought it was beautiful and muh husband made me shut it off in the middle.🙄
Strange, that.
How does a husband “make” a wife do something? Asking for a friend.
When something irritates someone it’s best to not keep doing it. That’s how you stay happily married for 24 years. He didn’t “make” me but he made it clear he was annoyed so I stopped. I did read the words to him and it made him think for a minute.
Outstanding.
And I’m grateful you pop in every once in a while Stuckmeister.
Stucky, A big Yes and Thank you for that.
Magical
Stucky, you’re right, I’m wrong. Thanks for for posting the lovely video, it helps me deal with it .
I heard this song about a year ago on Britain’s Got Talent (“Malakai Bayoh Pie Jesu Simon Cowell Golden Buzzer Full Performance”; https://youtu.be/ALuT7lIgK5o) and was awed by it then. Relistening to that one just now, I still have the hair stand up on the back of my neck when Malaki hits the high notes.
The version Stucky shared is much better because it doesn’t have noises and comments inserted at random times that take you out of just listening to angelic voices just because someone doesn’t know when to just shut up and listen. Perhaps that’s a lost art these days, though: both listening and for TV personalities to not have to comment on what’s happening during a broadcast.
Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for a few minutes to pause and just be enraptured by beauty. May you experience the mercy of God as well.
Thank you. I miss you.
Go Stucky!
Beautiful!
Philippians 4:6-9 KJB… “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”
Beautiful doesn’t mean is real. There are many beautiful delusions.
