Good Friday & It’s History

Guest Post by Martin Armstrong

One of my more interesting trips was to Jerusalem for Easter one year. You walk the streets of this ancient city, and they have marked the Stations of the Cross for those who want to follow the path. That was very interesting. You follow the procession and then end up at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre that covers Calvary, which is completely enclosed along with Christ’s Tomb in a Church originally constructed by Constantine the Great’s Mother, Saint Helena.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre 2The Church of the Holy Sepulchre lies in the Old City of Jerusalem. Helena first built a church on the site and dedicated it about 336 AD. The Persians burned it in 614AD, and it was then restored by an abbot of the monastery during the Byzantine reign of Theodosius (616–626AD). It was then destroyed again by the caliph al-Ḥākim bi-Amr Allāh around 1009AD. It was again restored by the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX Monomachus. Finally, the Crusaders carried out a general rebuilding of the church during the 12th century. Since all the various Christian sects are present, the Church remains unfinished since they still cannot reach an agreement.

Naturally, being a lover of history, I have always traveled around to experience what these places are. I roamed around Israel, visited all the famous places, and even climbed Masada rather than taking the tram. Some have asked me when Good Friday was first celebrated – (called Great and Holy Friday in the Orthodox Church).

From what I would say, the earliest record is found in the Didascalia Apostolorum, which appears to date back to 230 AD, probably during the reign of Severus Alexander – 222-235AD This prescribes activities during Holy Week, including a fast on Friday. The Twelve Apostles reportedly wrote it at the time of the Council of Jerusalem, described in chapter 15 of the Acts of the Apostles. This event has been attributed to be held in Jerusalem around c. 48–50 AD. However, many have proposed that this copy was a later composition during the 3rd century AD.

Something similar is recorded in the Apostolic Constitutions, which are dated to 375–380AD. A Spanish nun named Egeria wrote a diary sometime between 381 and 385AD, in which she, too, records the event and celebration.

Constitutions of the Holy Apostles (Constitutiones Apostolorum) is a Christian collection divided into eight books. This is classified among the Church Orders, a genre of early Christian literature. This was the prescriptions regarding moral conduct, liturgy, and Church organization – the origin of Canon Law.

I will never use the abbreviations “CE” or “BCE”. The correct ones are “AD” and “BC”. Yes, history turns on the Incarnation.

It is so important to history that it took more than half a millenium before someone invented it.

I am of the firm conviction that “A.D.” was attacked because of the Psyop against Christianity and Religion in general. It offends the sensibilites of Communist mass murderers.

I’m going to enjoy this gōd day named after Woden’s wife and look forward to greeting the Dawn, on Easter.

People with the physiognomy of Armstrong who love squalid semitic cities and climb herod’s hill as if it were a holy mountain do more to prove that christianity is jewish than I ever could. Don’t forget to cower before the demon demanding blood and firstborn this passover.

As a new Lutheran, I liked to be surprised by all the extra days of church I get to go to. I never even heard of Maundy Thursday before.

Hardly just a Lutheran thing. I don’t know of a Christian church that does not celebrate the day.

Maundy is the name of the Christian rite of footwashing, which traditionally occurs during Maundy Thursday church services.

Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday, among other names, is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet (Maundy) and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in the canonical gospels.

Since 1956 Maundy Thursday has been celebrated in Roman Catholic churches with a morning liturgy for the consecration of the holy oils for the coming year and an evening liturgy in commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist, with a general communion. During the evening liturgy the hosts are consecrated for the communion on Good Friday (when there is no liturgy), and the ceremony of the washing of feet is performed by the celebrant, who ceremonially washes the feet of 12 people in memory of Christ’s washing the feet of his disciples.

I am aware the liturgy is orthodox. But orthodoxy has never been popular in America. We just did an evening divine service where we end on a hymn while clearing the altar. Feet were not mentioned, because we aren’t Catholic.

It is not about feet, that was the act of Jesus on the night of betrayal, but about serving others than yourself. Every Christian domination I know of observes Maundy Thursday.

Of course. That’s what Jesus explained to Peter. I think a lot of reformed (calvinist) churches do not hold services on it.

Doubt you will see this, but I have a book on the Nephilim. I haven’t finished it yet, but the first half was compelling.

I am watching. Sounds like he is saying the same things. There are a few leaps I am skeptical of, such as “afterwards” necessarily being post flood. Another theory is that Noah’s wife was part Nephilim and the sin of Ham was thwarting God that she should not have more children.

The Gospel and the key to the OT being Jesus Christ is sufficient, but this stuff is interesting.

It is worth remembering Genesis is a revelation given to Moses. That information had not been kept. And for propriety, I confess I believe the whole Holy Christian Bible is the Word of God given through man inspired by God the Holy Spirt.

Oh and Enoch is clearly Apocrypha, but if we want to go beyond (which is warned against), it is all we have for all those details left out by Moses. I think the first few chapters (I don’t remember if it is up to 6) of Enoch are considered more reliable because they disagree with the Torah (first 5 books of the Bible) less.

The Bible does appear to reference the Book of Enoch, which is why it is elevated to Apocrypha over mere fiction. But again, it can’t be scripture because it disagrees with clear text from Moses who Jesus the Christ validated.

K31…to my understanding, the Bible doesn’t mention the book of Enoch….just Enoch.

It does reference the book of Jasher, and in it, we hear of the mingling of plants, animals…etc.

Jude 1:6 tells of angels that kept not their habitation

We both know of the proto-evangelium….Gen 3:15, which describes a ‘seed war’

Gen chap.6 ….(those angels that kept not their habitation) where the sons of God looked upon the daughters of men and ‘took for themselves whomsoever they chose’.

I find it both fascinating, and highly probable…even the post flood intrusion

I AM THAT I AM —>Jesus Christ—->Holy Ghost.

Guys like Chuck Missler…Michael Hieser(sp?)…Tom Horn….Deut. chap. 32…the divine council theory..and more put out volumes substantiating much in definitions of the original Hebrew and Greek

You are correct, as we should remain focused on the FREE gift of salvation through the efficacious sacrifice of Jesus!

GCP has command of a KJV, and his contributions toward scriptural interpretation is spot on, IMHO

Less than 30 years after Rome became officially christian, the city fell to Goths.

You expect anyone to believe that a religion was created to subvert and weaken a people, but that it was Romans manipulating the jews? Get real.

Rome became Christian because it was already falling as a political move. Rome also screwed the Orthodox Church to regain power.

I have never understood atheists who try to destroy other people’s faith. Assuming Jesus existed, they are flat wrong. If he didn’t, they are trying to destroy both the morality of Christianity and the comfort from mortality it brings to over a billion people, with no gain to the atheists. Why expend so much energy trying to hurt people and the western culture? Either they are socialist powerist who are trying to bring down God, the one power that is greater than they perceive themselves, or they are agents of evil.

A person can be against a religion without being an atheist. But if you can’t distinguish yhwh from God, that might be too much nuance for you.

To paraphrase Spooner talking about the consteetushun, either christian morality got us into this fucked up position, or it was powerless to stop it. Who cares whether a lie is comforting to the sheep? I can’t speak for kennytard above, but I say what I say for the ones who are NOT the sheep, at least deep down. How many people might have a real man lurking inside if they stopped and questioned why they are eating grass aka bullshit?

There is more evidence for the reality of the existence of Jesus and for what He said and did than there is for any other ancient persons, many of whom we revere as wise sages, etc. btw – kennyboy, you are just annoying, which I figure, is what you were going for. You succeeded

A single ancient having more evidence of existence destroys your claim the way you worded it. I’m going to guess there is a trick here like your bible is the only book that you accept as proof, or something.
