Effects of physical attractiveness on political beliefs

Affiliations

Abstract

Physical attractiveness is an important social factor in our daily interactions. Scholars in social psychology provide evidence that attractiveness stereotypes and the “halo effect” are prominent in affecting the traits we attribute to others. However, the interest in attractiveness has not directly filtered down to questions of political behavior beyond candidates and elites. Utilizing measures of attractiveness across multiple surveys, we examine the relationship between attractiveness and political beliefs. Controlling for socioeconomic status, we find that more attractive individuals are more likely to report higher levels of political efficacy, identify as conservative, and identify as Republican. These findings suggest an additional mechanism for political socialization that has further implications for understanding how the body intertwines with the social nature of politics.

Keywords: Physical attractiveness; halo effects; ideology; political beliefs; political efficacy; political socialization.

Toxic True Confessions of a Facial Fascist

Guest Post by Tobias Langdon

I’m fascinated by faces. In part, this is because I’m an ignoramus who has to gather information by instinct and intuition rather than by intellect. Faces are fruitful for me in a way that lots of other things aren’t. But then you’re an ignoramus too. You’re human, after all, and no human can look at a liver or lung and get as much information out of it as out of a face. The information is there all the same. A pious leftist radiologist lamented in 2021: There “is no easy way to remove racial information from [medical] images. It is everywhere and it is in everything.”

PHYSIOGNOMY IS REAL

Submitted by Hardscrabble Farmer

How is it that so many trusted their health to people who look sick? Would you take flying instructions from a blind man? Hire a personal trainer who was morbidly obese? Send your kids to a tutor with an IQ of 75?

Then why do we listen to “health experts” who appear to be dying from AIDS about what kinds of step to take in order to stay healthy?

It makes no sense to ignore our own senses and experience simply because someone has a title attached to the end of their name. Continue reading “PHYSIOGNOMY IS REAL”

LA County Supervisor Eats At Restaurant Hours After Voting To Ban Outdoor Dining

Authored by Andrea Widburg via AmericanThinker.com,

In the early days of television, Sheila Kuehl had a role in a now forgotten show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, which ended in 1963.  She then became a leftist, a lawyer, and a politician.  Despite the long interval between her Hollywood years and today, Kuehl still clings to that lampooned Hollywood notion about stars versus “the little people.”  How else can one explain that, after railing against restaurants and voting to shut them down, Kuehl promptly went to a nice restaurant for dinner?

During the lockdown, politicians continued to draw their taxpayer-funded paychecks and telecommute from the comfort of their homes.  Meanwhile, they targeted small businesses that depend on dealings with the public.  More than any other business, restaurants were in Democrat politicians’ crosshairs.

How Your Looks Shape Your Personality

The boarding school where I was a pupil in the 1990s provided the perfect microcosm for anyone interested in how “survival of the fittest” plays out among humans. In a boarding house of 50-plus rambunctious boys, all of us employed various strategies to avoid becoming isolated and bullied, from forming coalitions to gaining popularity by selling cheap batteries (my own deterrent-based approach involved cultivating a reputation as a karate fanatic).

Then there was the minority of larger-than-average boys whose sheer size meant they had little to worry about. These chaps had an understandable swagger and confidence about them – their outgoing, assertive personalities seemed to reflect their physicality.

Scientific Study Proves Physiognomy is Real

Guest Post by Hardscrabble Farmer

The other day I stumbled onto a series of clips of comics being heckled on YouTube. As I was scrolling through the screen caps of each clip I noticed one face and inside my mind I heard a voice tell me, ‘He’s English’ and I clicked on the link. Now I had never seen this person before, the image of him was a close up of his face half obscured by a microphone and no other clues to his location or identity. The title was something ambivalent like “comedian shuts down heckler” or something like that.

On Physiognomy

Guest Post by Hardscrabble Farmer

I never owned any livestock until I was almost 50 years old. My experience with animals was based on what I knew about dogs and cats, a little bit of hunting every couple of years and a fish tank I owned in the 1960’s. Like most Americans every scrap of flesh I ever put in my mouth came from somewhere in the ether, arriving on a plate in a restaurant or packaged in a Styrofoam container with a strip of plastic wrap t seal in the color until it made it to my grill. I trusted in the system that provided food to me because it was the only system I had ever known, not because it was inherently trustworthy. I was, like everyone else, a consumer.
