Don’t Shoot the Dogs: The Growing Epidemic of Cops Shooting Family Dogs

Guest Post by John W. Whitehead

“In too much of policing today, officer safety has become the highest priority. It trumps the rights and safety of suspects. It trumps the rights and safety of bystanders. It’s so important, in fact, that an officer’s subjective fear of a minor wound from a dog bite is enough to justify using potentially lethal force, in this case at the expense of a 4-year-old girl. And this isn’t the first time. In January, an Iowa cop shot and killed a woman by mistake while trying to kill her dog. Other cops have shot other kidsother bystanderstheir partnerstheir supervisors and even themselves while firing their guns at a dog. That mind-set is then, of course, all the more problematic when it comes to using force against people.”—Journalist Radley Balko

The absurd cruelties of the American police state keep reaching newer heights.

Consider that if you kill a police dog, you could face a longer prison sentence than if you’d murdered someone or abused a child.

If a cop kills your dog, however, there will be little to no consequences for that officer.

Not even a slap on the wrist.

Cop Shoots Dog With an AR-15 During a 5-Year-Old’s Birthday Party

This is an absolutely horrendous story.  I have no pleasure in sharing this news, and I don’t want to see it any more than you do.  But this is egregious, and it needs to stop.  He won’t even be charged for it, because his superior officer says that he was acting within his duty by shooting a dog in a fenced yard.  That’s why we need to make this heartless murderer – Wynnewood Police Department’s Josh Franklin – known for his heinous crime.

Eli Malone’s birthday will probably always be a painful reminder of what has probably been the worst day in his very young life.

“We had just brought the kids in to give them cake and ice cream,” Vickie Malone told the Daily News. “We weren’t even in the house five minutes and then ‘bang!’”

“Mama, something wrong with Opie,” Eli cried.

Everyone hurried to the window to see the three-year-old American bulldog-pit bull mix lying on the ground.  The adults rushed outside to find him “kicking and gasping for air” on one side of the fence as Franklin stood on the other.

Programmed to Kill: The Growing Epidemic of Cops Shooting Dogs

Guest Post by John W. Whitehead

Almost two years after the firestorm that took place in Ferguson, Missouri, when a white police officer shot an unarmed black teenager and militarized police descended in a brutal show of force to quell local protests, not much has really changed for the better.

Unarmed Americans are still getting shot by police with alarming regularity.

SWAT teams are still bursting through doors, terrorizing families and leaving lives and property shattered.

And the military industrial complex is still making a killing (literally and figuratively) at taxpayer expense from the transformation of small-town police forces into extensions of the military.

What has changed is the extent to which Americans—easily distracted by all of the political mumbo jumbo being bantered around—seem to have stopped paying attention or being outraged about revelations of government corruption, wrongdoing and outright abuse.

Part of this ignorance can be attributed to the failure of the mainstream media to report on what’s really taking place in the American police state.
