QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Cell phones are tracking devices that make phone calls.”

Jacob Appelbaum

“This lack of reaction arose partly because many in Germany and elsewhere chose to believe Hitler’s claim that he had suppressed an imminent rebellion that would have caused far more bloodshed. Evidence soon emerged, however, that showed that in fact Hitler’s account was false…

The controlled press, not surprisingly, praised Hitler for his decisive behaviour…In a letter to Hull, Dodd forecast an even more terroristic regime. ‘The people hardly notice this complete coup d’etat. It takes place in silence…I would swear that millions upon millions have no idea what a monstrous thing has occurred.'”

Erik Larson, The Garden of Beasts

When we were working in eastern Europe about 2006, my backwards former communist co-worker had one of the first internet connected cell phones I’d ever seen. He didn’t use it much at work.

Except on Fridays. His paycheck was direct deposited into his bank account on Fridays. On Fridays he was just glued to that phone and I asked him why. He said he was watching to see for his pay credited into his account so he could withdraw all the cash from the ATM machine right away.

Those people didn’t trust banks and they didn’t leave their money lollygagging around in bank accounts either. That money went home with them, in cash, every Friday.

They taught me a lot. Many lessons learned from a stalwart people who had seen their country disintegrate, their financial system crash twice in ten years, their currency implode, and their savings disappear.

So you see, cell phones are good for something.
