How tragic.

I … and many people my age … had friends who died in Vietnam when we were teenagers. Not wanting to be trite here, but life-lessons are learned when crap like that happens.

Are you going to drive out to see him?

Sorry about your son’s loss. Unfortunately, I have to see life snuffed out in a sudden and tragic manner more than I’d like. I hope it wasn’t the result of texting and driving.

Summer should be a fun time, especially for young people.

This is so very sad.

Normally I do my own vehicle maintenance and repair but being laid up, I took my wife’s truck in for brake work to a shop I’ve used over years yesterday. The shop was in disarray. Turns out the owners daughter was recovered face down in a nearby river by a couple of kayakers on Sunday. The got her heart going again but it looks like she is brain dead. The decisions they now face are something I cannot even begin to imagine.

In an instant indeed!

I am sorry to hear this. So sad for a child to die before he got a chance to experience life, and so sad for his little friends who must deal with it.

I am so very sorry Admin, family, especially for your son.

There is little worse that can happen when you are young than losing to death a friend, especially a best one.

My heart is crying for him.

Sending love, warm thoughts and hope for healing for the young man, your son and all families concerned.

(hugs)

Do not save your loving speeches
for your friends till they are dead.
Do not write them on their tombstones,
speak them rather now instead.

Admin – much the same happened to me at college – I lost a lifelong friend. It is terribly traumatic and it took a very long time for me to come to grips with it. In some ways I still haven’t. We made plans to meet up at various points and times in our lives, and every so often one of those times comes and goes, and it is very hard. We also had a series of life competitions in place – who would make the most money by different ages being one. Damn, I would have liked the opportunity to try to collect, or vice versa.

Sorry for your loss, and Kevin’s.

Came close to Meeting my Maker out on the Road a few months ago myself.  Certainly makes you ponder on the nature of Mortality and the Existence of God.

Yes – I remember—I was 19. A friend I had gone to high school with was on his way home late one night on his motorcycle. Then somehow he, his motorcycle and a tree, and I never saw him again. All you’re left with are a lot of questions to which you’ll never get any answers.

So sorry for your loss.

I’ve come close to being dead more times than I can count. I was born breech. I’ve been shot at. Damn close to run over-many times. I was in the tallest building between NY and Chicago on 9-11; one of the planes circled it three times before finding out Bush wasn’t in Cleveland that day as he was scheduled to be and flew off.

I’ve had many friends and acquaintances and friends killed in car accidents over the years. Most of those tragedies occured when I was younger and they were too.

More recently – five years ago – our unlicensed 16 year old took our car at night and wrecked it. Thank God for airbags. They saved him just as they would have spared many of my lost friends.

“Be careful,” I’ve told our boys many times over the years. Usually they have been.

The Parcae (the Fates) are fickle followers throughout our lives. Judgement and care usually keep them at bay. But not always. Enjoy your family, friends, and the moment. The best memories are good memories and they do last.

it’s over all too quickly. a kid broadsided us a few years ago, I never felt anything. I just woke up and felt real tired. (our Q said that if you don’t feel any pain, you are hurt bad.) the emt kept waking me up with impertinent questions, what’s my name, what’s his name… I felt like I was snapping at him. I didn’t care, all I wanted was to sleep.

there is more to this story but my point now is that I am sure the kid didn’t suffer at all. it’s just a big loss for so many people who shared his life.
