Sounds like women in Japan have a permanent headache. Japan’s population was already in a death spiral. This trend will be the final nail in the coffin. Japan is a dying country and money printing and fiscal stimulus will not save them. They needed a different kind of stimulus, but they came up limp on that front. Maybe Abe should spike the water supply with viagra to get some stimulus going.
The Japanese are responding in the only appropriate way to the core problem, which is that it is way overpopulated relative to its resource base. Life in Japan is difficult, extremely expensive,and extremely cramped, what with a population bigger than Mexico’s packed onto a handful of islands
And life is not going to get any cheaper or less stressful as energy prices rise in response to all the nukes being yanked out of service. This is a place that must import ALL of its fuel.
Worse, while the current population of retirees and those about to retire may need the earnings of younger people, the economy does NOT need these younger people and will surely have no jobs for them as more jobs are automated.
The only thing Japan or any other developed, industrial economy needs an expanding base of people for, is to prop up the pyramid-scheme retirement systems of most of the countries in the developed world. Pyramid schemes rely upon an infinitely expanding “base” of people paying in to support the people at the pinnacle- current retirees- collecting benefits, which is why all pyramid rackets eventually hit a wall……. especially when you are already in population overshoot relative to your depleting resource base, which the entire world is at this time, especially energy-guzzling industrial countries.
Will an expanding base of unemployed and increasingly impoverished young be able to support a massive population of retirees any better than a small base of people who are at least employed and able to support themselves?
Time to allow that our retirement systems as currently structured will not work and make the required adjustments before nature and events make them for us. People in my age bracket (boomer) are going to have to accept less, so that the younger folk can fund their own retirements, which will be difficult enough given that our economy will doubtless continue to contract due to permanent resource depletion, and there will be far fewer jobs for anyone in any case, as automation and robotics replace more and more ordinary workers.

The only thing that I question is the comment about the “inferior races”, given that the Japanese singlehandedly and without (for the most part) imported foreigners have managed to fuck up their economy spectacularly. In spite of their purportedly average superior intellect. I’d guess we ALL are still rather susceptible to corruption, both moral, social, or economic. That so called reptilian and mammalian brain is a bitch, I guess, regardless of differences in mathematical/logical reasoning ability. Would they have gone down the drain already if they had a more heterogeneous society?… who knows.
