I haven’t watched a State of the Union Address in the last ten years. It is the phoniest load of bullshit among a blizzard of phony bullshit in Washington D.C. You have a bunch of bought politicians cheering their side like high school kids at the homecoming game. You have fake displays of affection and sickening displays of faux patriotism. Whatever flavor of the month is hot will be honored by getting to sit next to the first lady. Maybe we’ll have a cartoonist and a Muslim flanking Moochelle tonight. Maybe a Muslim cartoonist. Maybe Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin’s mothers. Their fathers can’t be located. Maybe Oprah, to jump start ticket sales for Selma. Maybe Obama will announce a Selma stimulus package by spending $1 billion for “free” tickets for inner city yutts.
Obama is a lame duck. None of the bullshit ideas he bloviates about tonight will happen. It will be his standard class warfare and race warfare agenda. At least he is predictable. The only thing he’ll get cheers for is more spending for our wars of choice, more spending to crush Russia, more spending to defeat our vaporous enemy – TERRORISM, and more spending to militarize the Barney Fifes across the land.
I won’t be watching, so my blood pressure will remain under control. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing, but here are a few things I’d rather do than watch the Savior tonight:
- I’d rather use a pen knife to remove my finger nails one by one.
- I’d rather relive the appendicitis I had for 48 hours when I was 26 years old.
- I’d rather read one of RE’s 10,000 word screeds about global warming.
- I’d rather spend a weekend with bb and his cat.
- I’d rather watch Selma, The Butler, and Black Annie back to back to back.
- I’d rather watch Jim Cramer, Steve Liesman and Larry Kudlow discuss how well the economy is doing.
- I’d rather listen to SSS bloviate about the success of the war on drugs, the morality of the CIA, and the glorious future of nuclear energy.
- I’d rather be 5 minutes late for my job at Llpoh’s factory.

Joni Ernst started great. At the beginning, I was getting that same vibe as the one I saw of Obummers 2004 Dem Convention speech. Once she hiccuped a word, she had lost her game after that. She went into full on “TOTUS” mode (just blindly reading the teleprompter), and her pauses were unnatural.
I think the Repubs pulled the trigger a touch early on shoving her into the limelight, and she just wasn’t quite ready. Given a little time to age, she could have been a serious adversary for Hillary… but then again, I suspect TPTB just want another Bush in office.

If the Republicans were serious about a counter-speech, they should have let Rand Paul take a crack at it. I’m certain he could have destroyed half of what Obummer had to say.
OTOH, havn’t both parties for quite some time been wanting to put new upstarts in front of cameras just after SOTU? IIRC, that New Orleans mayor did a follow up one year, or perhaps I’m confused. I just know too often these rebuttals are just fucked.
Even Earnsts’ speech tonight seemed mostly pre-written, and if–at best–following a choose-your-own-adventure book like narrative. I understand a good speech is hard to write in 20min, but IF YOU HAD SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY UNDERSTOOD WTF WAS GOING ON, it can be done.

I’ve had my differences with a few of the veterans around this site (Stucky, llpoh, even SSS if memory recalls correctly–perhaps it was bb), but over time all of them have won respect in my eyes simply by lurking and seeing their reactions to posts and comments. There is reason behind what they think/say. I would venture to even say that they have adjusted my perception on reality.
IMO that is the core of what TBP really is…. all of us that choose to come around, challenging each other to view reality from a better angle to truly understand WTF is going on. (And prepare, if you dare.)
