In all fairness, there are good people locked up. When I was arrested and held incognito in Santa Rita, CA prison for 5 days over my anti-war reporting in 2003, it was a black dude that saved my ass – twice.
First, i had zero experience with being locked up in a shithole prison, and this guy knew it the minute he saw me. When I had a diabetic reaction (Type 1) and went into hypo – a deadly situation – this man almost kicked the door down, yelling for the pigs to get their asses in there as they had a “man down.” A huge risk for him. When I was thrown back into the “bullpen” with him he immediately took charge of me and kept me as comfortable as possible while giving me a non-stop download of how to survive as he was getting released at any moment. Then he did something incredible.
When the pigs came to release him, he grabbed me and said “Your coming out with me, keep your fucking mouth shut and just walk out with me, they might not notice there are three other dudes going out too.” It didn’t work, but he carried out my attorney’s phone number, gave him a call when he got out and I was sprung that day. The pigs put the arrest down to “mistaken identity” when they knew exactly who I was, snarking when they threw me in the tank “there ya go… Mr. Journalist.”
My wife and I left America a month later – forever. Fuck America and the fucking feral, coward Alameda Country pigs. They will get theirs one fine day. THIS is how they treat disabled USMC Vets.
I never saw him again, but I will be forever grateful for his humanity and mercy in taking this sick, clueless white boy under his protective wing when I needed it most. Just goes to show you….
