Academic Fascism

Guest Post by Walter E. Williams

Last week’s column highlighted college campus absurdities and the ongoing attack on free speech and plain common sense. As parents gear up to fork over $20,000 to $60,000 for college tuition, they might benefit from knowing what greets their youngsters. Deceitful college officials, who visit high schools to recruit students and talk to parents, conceal the worst of their campus practices. Let’s expose some of it.

Christina Hoff Sommers is an avowed feminist and a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. She’s spent a lifetime visiting college campuses. Recently, upon her arrival at Oberlin College, Georgetown University and other campuses, trigger warnings were issued asserting, in her words, that her “very presence on campus” was “a form of violence” and that she was threatening students’ mental health. At Oberlin, 30 students and the campus therapy dog retired to a “safe room” with soft music, crayons and coloring books to escape any uncomfortable facts raised by Sommers.

The problem for students and some professors is that Sommers challenges the narrative, with credible statistical facts, that women are living in a violent, paternalistic rape culture. As a result, she has been “excommunicated from the church of campus feminism” in order to protect women from her uncomfortable facts. This prompted Sommers to say, “There’s a move to get young women in combat, and yet on our campuses, they are so fragile they can’t handle a speaker with dissenting views.” I wonder whether there will be demands for the military to have therapy dogs and safe rooms in combat situations.

The University of New Hampshire published a “Bias-Free Language Guide,” which “is meant to invite inclusive excellence in (the) campus community.” Terms such as “American,” “homosexual,” “illegal alien,” “Caucasian,” “mothering,” “fathering” and “foreigners” are deemed “problematic.” Other problematic terms include “elders,” “senior citizen,” “overweight,” “speech impediment,” “dumb,” “sexual preference,” “manpower,” “freshmen,” “mailman” and “chairman.” For now, these terms are seen as problematic. If the political correctness police were permitted to get away with it, later they would bring disciplinary action against a student or faculty member who used the terms.

The offender would be required to attend diversity training, the leftist equivalent of communist re-education camps. In a rare instance of administrative guts, UNH President Mark Huddleston said he is offended by many things in the guide and declared that it is not university policy.

Florida State University has an “Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination Statement,” which says, “Behavior that may be considered offensive, demeaning, or degrading to persons or groups will not be tolerated.” That’s both broad and troublesome. Say that you’re a Muslim student and offended by homosexuality. Can you demand termination of campus activities that support homosexual activities?

A 2014 report by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (http://tinyurl.com/mjvn4kl) found that 59 percent of the 427 higher-education institutions it analyzed have policies that infringe on First Amendment rights. FIRE found that the University of Connecticut prohibits “actions that intimidate, humiliate, or demean persons or groups, or that undermine their security or self-esteem.” The University of South Carolina prohibits “teasing,” “ridiculing” and “insulting.”

In 2012, FIRE listed the “12 Worst Colleges for Free Speech” (http://tinyurl.com/o94rour). In no particular order, they are the University of Cincinnati, Syracuse University, Widener University, Harvard University, Yale University, Saint Augustine’s College, Michigan State University, Colorado College, Johns Hopkins University, Tufts University, Bucknell University and Brandeis University.

University presidents, other academic administrators and faculty members all too often find the well-worn path of least resistance most attractive. They give support to claims of oppression and victimhood. These close-minded people are simply the “grown-up” leftist hippie generation of the 1960s and ’70s.

You might ask: What’s Walter Williams’ solution to these problems? For starters, benefactors should stop giving money to universities that endorse anti-free speech and racist diversity policy. Simply go to a university’s website. If you find an office of diversity, close your pocketbook. There’s nothing like the sound of pocketbooks snapping shut to open the closed minds of administrators.

Academics have tolerated and encouraged the Brown Shirts for years and now they are the Brown Shirts. Universities are the home base of the leftist totalitarians. Conservative, libertarian, pro-life and 2nd amendment speakers have been shouted down and threatened with violence for years. The hypocritical 1st amendment administrations haven’t done shit about it because they agree. The people willing to use violence always succeed against those who will not use violence to defend their rights. ALWAYS.

I have two technical degrees, and am an adjunct professor, as well as a public face for advanced education in our school districts (in my home town area at least).

I just wanted to say that so that my next statement had some shred of credibility:

College is a sham. It is not meant to enrich a person culturally, give them a skill-set to advance their life, or train them to think.

College is just another vehicle for enslaving people to debt, teaching them WHAT to think instead of HOW to think, and give them just enough skills that they can somewhat contribute, without having to worry about delusions of grandeur.

I’ll never forget wrangling with professors, students, and group members alike when it came to equality. “You are a white male, you have it easy.”

Fuck, yeah right. Us pig farmers are known for our high-fallutin’ ways. Goddamn idiots.

I sort of got asked not to come back to GA orientation after day 1 (4 day course) because of my intolerable views on equality.

To pass the course you had to take a bullshit multi-choice test. I returned for the test, and aced it as all I have to do is think “I hate men and wish I was one, I hate men and wish I was one” to get in the brain of the test designer.

15 minutes of crazed idiotic test questions later, I had passed orientation.

Yay me.

In fairness to the University of New Hampshire, when I heard of this crazy list of words I wrote to the president of the university. I received a very nice reply. The list WAS NOT endorsed by the university. It was posted on line by a bunch of SJW wackos The university disavowed it..

My daughter went to a Seven Sisters liberal arts college in the late 90s and did very well, but she is something of a feminist, very active in “women’s” causes. My son went to a liberal arts college a few years later and left after two years to go to an engineering school, effective starting over from scratch and with a deep and abiding detestation of liberals, feminists, p.c.ers, etc. White males were discriminated against and he was having none of it. I went to an Ivy League university 1964-1972 (four years off to discover the “world”) and the place from which I graduated was utterly unlike that the place where I’d begun: it all happened that fast. I don’t believe I’d send a son to a US liberal arts school today; an engineering school, maybe, but…

It’s truly a tragedy what has happened to “higher education” in the US and elsewhere, but from the sixties onward it was a chronicle of a death foretold.

Supreme court tells employers it’s illegal to administer tests to job applicants so employers settle for a surrogate IQ test: a college degree.

Santa Claus Democrats shower low interest loans on college students, making them cost-insensitive.

University administrators competing for students unleash a spending/cost-escalation tsunami to attract 18-year-olds with promises of an all-expenses-paid 5 year extension of adolescence….(don’t notice the fine print of indentured servitude that follows.)

The Left, squatting on the moral high ground for 40 years, ups the ante by turning groupthink, hiveminded IDIOCRACY into a science on the university campus.

None of this will change until there is a sudden and general revolt at the entire circle-jerk of lunacy.

When that Poseidon Adventure moment arrives, TRUST ME, it will be as though a light switch was flipped.

University enrollment will crater 30% y-o-y, then 60% the next year, and more than half the colleges in the USA will shutter over a three year period.

It’s coming, I just don’t know when.

To repeat myself (well, to repeatedly post a quote from another person):

“Like many others in the alt-right, I was a good, racially blind conservative until fairly recently. I approvingly cited MLK’s maxim about the content of character.

“However, what happened around 2008 or so is that the Democrat Party openly declared war on white people. You’ve seen the screeds about white privilege, reparations, diversity programs, and open borders all couched in explicitly anti-white lines. This isn’t a “conspiracy theory.” It’s what they, themselves, say to anyone who’s listening. They hate white people. “White male” is a pejorative whenever spoken by a Democrat.

“Their open, stated goal is to strip white people of all “privileges” we have—including our incomes, our neighborhoods, and our avoidance of incarceration—and no one on the mainstream right is willing to stand up to it. Because to do so would mean saying words like “white people,” “the white community,” “white culture,” and “white interests,” and you have agreed with the left that those things are evil and illegitimate, and that anyone who disagrees is a Nazi. We all know you will be literally called a Nazi if you ever say, “the white community” except to talk about how it needs to be diversified, i.e., not exist.”

This hearkens back to the free speech movement at Berkeley in 1968. This movement performed surgicl removal of the spines and backbones of all college administrators and the effects continue today. Until administrators stand up and say “no” to these demonstrators and nay sayers and inform them that there will be no safe spaces because this is a university and the basic idea is to expose the students to new ideas and not to help them escape those ideas. If the ideas are too traumatic for the student, then it is clear the student is not ready for the university and needs to withdraw.
