Absolutely.

Theoretical question.

If you were presented with the REALITY of everything the governments knows and has ever known, in other words, given free reign to see EVERYTHING they have, and then knew you could never tell another living soul, what difference would it make in your life?

How you you see the world differently suddenly KNOWING the truth? What would it mean to you to watch the public chase false prophets, “buy into” government-controlled spin, believe lies?

Would you be happier knowing you had the entire picture? Would it change anything about the way you went through your day?

Too much information may carry a very high price, at least in terms of “personal” happiness.

@Backtable: No, I disagree.

You can never have enough TMI when it comes to Reality. You just have to be STRONG enough to EMBRACE THE DOOM that you are not really in control of as much as you thought you were, prepare to live without that security blanket and just say Fuck It to the rest of it.

That being said, I take the “Tigger” approach to life:

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is Tiggers are wonderful things!
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs!
They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is
I’m the only one!

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is Tiggers are marvelous chaps!
They’re loaded with vim and with vigor
They love to leap in your laps!
They’re jumpy, bumpy, clumpy, thumpy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is
I’m the only one

Tiggers are cuddly fellas
Tiggers are awfully sweet
Ev’ryone el-us is jealous
That’s why I repeat…and repeat

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is Tiggers are wonderful things!
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs!
They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is…

I””””mmmmm…. the only one!

Rrwwow!

Positive thinking is the new go to excuse for being a low-informative dumbass. All the the positive thinking in the world won’t turn a shit sandwich into roast beef. ..best to understand that before the first bite.

There is nothing new about using “positive thinking” as the go-to excuse for being a brainless, unthinking dumbass.

I just HATE “positive thinking”. There’s a difference between maintaining an optimistic “can-do” outlook in the face of adversity… and being delusional. What I notice is that “positive thinking” usually means telling lies, mostly to yourself, while telling the truth means you are “negative” or a “Debbie Downer”, which I’m accused of being a lot.

I prefer the TRUTH and it is not always positive.

Maybe the question is better phrased “can you be positive and a REALIST at the same time”?

Dwelling on the negative is not good for the soul. You should always be a realist, but that doesn’t mean you can’t remain positive/hopeful.

Positive thinking and intelligent/critical thinking are NOT mutually exclusive. It is all about context. When people say “Live for today” we usually take it to mean go party and have a good time. But it is not about action…it is about attitude. NOW is the time you can have a thought or an emotion, and you can choose to look at these in a positive or negative light and it has nothing to do with sugar-coating or ignoring problems, it is just staying grounded in the moment. Focusing upon that which you can change (your attitude) and dimishing that which you can not (ALL external circumstances).

Yes, it sounds trite…believe me, in my younger days I would have laughed at this crap. But more and more, I find it not only to be true but to be the only way to deal with an uncertain future (as well as the certain one).

Another valid (vital) truth I would have once mocked: “Worry does not take away the tomorrow’s trouble, it only takes away today’s peace.”

Backtable: reading your comments brought to mind two quotes that I believe to be true an yet very much in conflict, a paradox if you will:

“The un-examined life is not worth living” – Socrates

“Ignorance is bliss” – Thomas Gray

It is all just a question of how far down the rabbit hole each of us wishes to go.

In the light of all that I think I know about our Impending Doom, I no longer strive for being positive, I’ll settle for equanimity. It’s still possible to experience joy in the moment, knowing that it will all go away. And thumbs up to Bea, Hope, and DRUD; I will always prefer knowledge to ignorance.

Love the question, mike. Love the answer, hope. I always try to work the sunny side of the street, but that’s no reason for denial of the mess we’re in.

The question begs a question. these typical kind of truisms I have seen for many years. Tiresome they have become, if not pesky, sophistry. “If God is all powerful and omnipotent, can he make a rock larger than he can pick up?” is an example. As to my experience in US culture, “le the good times roll” and “who gives a shit” has been the dominant theme. “We do need no stinkin’ principles, WTF truth?” [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7BuQFUhsRM?feature=player_detailpage&w=640&h=360%5D

Positive thoughts only carry a person so far. After ‘LIFE’ kicks you in the balls enough times you will realize this fact.

Positive thinking leads to Happiness, Wealth, Security and such. The common desires of the great herd. All delusions and illusions, but a great way to pile up some cash by selling books, video tapes and seminars showing the folks how how to get it all.

Having confidence, knowledge and skills are the things that nurture peace of mind. Having that peace of mind can help a human deal with great joy, great sadness, success, failure, frustration, anger, love and hate with out being consumed by any of them.

Information, the truth is valuable even if it can not be capitalized in any foreseeable way. It may well be the ultimate swag. Information or the truth is neither good or bad though it can be about good or bad things. The only gains in life that you could possibly take with you into the afterlife if there is one are what you know and understand. So yes lets have the knowledge, lets have all the truth and receive it with hot blood and cool mind.

I forgot to mention that having confidence and peace of mind might not be all that much good without titties.
