Question of the Day, Jan 9

Saturday bonus question. The governor of Texas wants to call a Constitutional convention. Is this a good idea? From TheHill.com the nine proposed amendments are:

· Prohibit Congress from regulating activity that occurs wholly within one State.

· Require Congress to balance its budget.

· Prohibit administrative agencies—and the unelected bureaucrats that staff them—from creating federal law.

· Prohibit administrative agencies—and the unelected bureaucrats that staff them—from preempting state law.

· Allow a two-thirds majority of the States to override a U.S. Supreme Court decision.

· Require a seven-justice super-majority vote for U.S. Supreme Court decisions that invalidate a democratically enacted law.

· Restore the balance of power between the federal and state governments by limiting the former to the powers expressly delegated to it in the Constitution.

· Give state officials the power to sue in federal court when federal officials overstep their bounds.

· Allow a two-thirds majority of the States to override a federal law or regulation.

Yes, cuz it will be injected into the minds (such as they are) of the population. The lib media will trash it and most of the witless registered Dem voters (without critical thinking abilities) will take the side presented by the media. But, there are a number of people that recognize something is seriously wrong in this country and they will not be convinced by the media – this is a positive, as this specific attempt to restore citizen rights, the Constitution, hinder Oligarchy, etc., is just another nail exerting a cumulative effect, with more instances to arrive.

It’s nice to see an elected official at such a high level actually propose something rational. I also like that dude in Kentucky. If I’m not careful, they’ll restore my belief in the system. Naaaah, just kidding!

Terrible idea. As bad as it is now, this would undoubtably make it worse. Look around. Are people today more, or less, inclined towards liberty? Id say a whole lot less. The republicans who keep pushing for this are mostly the same ones who support the war on drugs, NSA spying, civil asset forfeiture laws, militarized police, and endless, pointless war overseas. Anyone who thinks these republicans would restore the civil liberties and freedoms they themselves have helped take away(or at the very least stood by when they could have done something about it) is delusional.

Let’s say for a minute this guy actually gets these allegedly pro freedom amendments in. The current amendments like the 2,4,5,10 could not be more clearly written, yet they are ignored every day. What makes people think these new ones won’t be too? And giving another branch of the government more power over a different branch of government doesn’t really give me the warm and fuzzies either. I want the entire corrupt edifice stripped of its power, not just shuffling it around to different places. I also don’t like giving religious extremists like some of these people more say over what I can do. Evangelical republicans like this governor scare me and so do their supporters. The idea of them getting to run the show and be in charge of everything is almost as scary as the left.

Please, for the love of dog, do not go along with this constitutional convention nonsense. The statists will just use it to remove the pretense that we actually have a free country. The government would come away from it with more power, the average citizen would come away less free. Anyone who tells you different is either stupid and not paying attention or is lying to you.

I am all for a new Convention. ONE RULE NOT NEGOTIABLE.

No one with a past or present job or place in any government including lobbyists may take part in this convention.

A Constitutional convention cannot be limited in what it covers. It’s delegates can and will change it to cover anything and everything they want it to cover in spite of any original limitations by a simple vote to do so.

The first one was supposed to narrowly cover issues making the Confederation of States cumbersome and ineffective and look what happened. We ended up with an entirely different government.

It will be the same this time, but this time it will be dominated by leftist delegates who will simply expand what it is meant to cover and push their agenda on everyone by writing a new Constitution establishing a different form of government and a very, very different relationship between the government and the people (and it won’t be a benign one).

They’ve already had this waiting in the wings for decades: http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/master_file/newstatesconstitution.htm

Yet most people are unaware of it, which is why so many are now starting to call for a Convention of the States again.

Bad idea. I don’t want liberal leftists progressives democrats politicians anywhere near the constitution. In a convention the leftists would do what ever they could to sabotage , undermine and further trash our REPUBLIC.

Leave the Constitution alone and enforce the law. Until we address the failure of our judicial system with a cleansing revolution of impeachment, we will continue to circle the bowl for the final flush.

I’d avoid a Convention, though my Governor’s intention are good, as seen by the planks he proposed.

However, the simplest solution is to elect a President who would actually abide by the current Constitution. By using the bully pulpit, as Reagan did to a degree, he could roll back much of the statist nightmare we currently face.

Is that possible? Trump & Cruz are both pointing that way, so we may see.

Agree with anonymous. Terrible idea. Since an open convention has no boundaries, no telling what will be added or taken away. Also, what is the use of adding more words, since the executive doesn’t follow what now exists, and the legislature does nothing in response. Try following the Constitution now insread of changing it, nitwits!

It sure does sound good, but our Republic has allowed so much malfeasance in the past 100 years that it will not be allowed to occur. The progressives have their tentacles imbedded so deep in our system along with rampant government dependency of dubious charactered people. The only option is the collapse of the system, which is going to happen sooner than most imagine. Hopefully some true patriots of liberty minded beliefs will fill the void!

curtmilr,

I have more faith in Trump than Cruz, although I wouldn’t at all mind seeing a Trump/Cruz ticket.

Cruz may have already been in politics too long and been assimilated to current political thinking too much to pursue and actual different course, Trump is not a politician by nature or profession.

A Con Con is a HORRIBLE IDEA. We could easily lose whatever rights we still have.

On the other hand, accepting and following the idea of state nullification IS THE WAY to reduce federal power and bring it back to the states.

Nullification, as commented on by Thomas Woods, is the Jeffersonian and Madison idea that a state can “nullify” a federal law that the state deems is unconstitutional, at least within its own state.

If a politican wants to reduce federal overreach, and Reagan’s concept of 50 experiments in freedom, than he’ll be in full support of state Nullification.

If a politician wants to pretend to “do something” but in reality merely continue to tool over Americans and keep the power at the federal level, he talk about a Con Con or a Constitutional Amendment.

Honestly, that’s it! Use Nullification or accept Globalist control.

There can be no national reform, let alone constitutional, when the nation is in the grips of a criminal ruling class. Until the nation is returned to lawful, and true representative governance (as unlikely as it seems, today), at all levels and not just federal, it’s not only a waste of time but also highly dangerous.

There are too many out there who are quite content to allow a constitutionally legitimated police state, where the only so-called rights will be entitlements and license, conferred arbitrarily and selectively, by the state. Although the constitution guarantees equality for all under the law, we know that just ain’t so – some are more equal than others. The pretense exists, however, so that the majority continue to adhere to the narrative of the Great American Way. Given the opportunity, the deep state will take the opportunity to make itself official.

Rick Perry, Govenor of Texas ? while he may be no friend of zero, isn’t he a neocon tool ?
Yeah and what will we need to give up to have our rights restored, I wouldn’t trust it, to not screw us over even further.

Monger,

The only thing we will have to give up to have our rights restored is our rights.

That sort of thing actually makes sense to the leftists, even though it seems ridiculous to anyone else.

And it will be the leftists that are in control of it.

I would say yes but with one caveat………the current MSM has to be somehow excluded from any participation and that includes reporting on it. They are nothing but shills and controlled govt mouthpieces.
