How many newspapers do you think they’ve sold over the years based on Trump?

Biting the hand that feeds you is never a good long term strategy.

Is the Daily News still in business? Them and NY Times are seeing plummeting circulation as they are down to their last few readers. If you look at the Times, they try to insert a gay angle into almost every story–truly pathetic. I think most objective readers gave up on them a long time ago. Whether you support Trump or not this is about as unprofessional as you can get, Out.

… and the British and French find this newspaper front page hilarious. Remember that Palin was John McCain’s choice of running mate and surely cost him the election. If he could make decisions like that, how could you trust him with things that really matter?

Indeed, you have to wonder about the structure and membership of the Republican Party if it can come up with candidates like Trump, Cruz, Palin et al. Some Arizona people I know think McCain is a nutter too, but that is not obvious way over here.

@Jim: Personally, I am all for excluding religious fanatics of any ilk. I would only allow paid-up atheists to come anywhere near my country (well, two or three countries actually). All the rest, with possible exception of Tibetan Buddhists, could go somewhere else.

As for barriers along US international borders, I am all for them. Build a 10 metre high wall along the Mexican border like the Israeli “separation barrier”, but without as much as a single gate in it. A similar one along the Canadian border could keep those evil Brits and Muslims from infiltrating from the Frozen North. Don’t put any gates in that either.

And finally, close all your international air communications with the Rest of The World. That will keep the Evil Brits and Muslims from flying in and plotting the overthrow of the US Guvmint.

@EL Coyote:

In case you haven’t been watching what has been going on in Europe over the past few months, various governments have been throwing up razor wire fences in quite a hurry. Hungary was the first, putting up hundreds of kilometres of formidable razor wire fences along the borders with Serbia, Romania and Slovenia. Macedonia and Slovenia have followed suit and the Swedes and Danes have erected barriers on their borders too. As for the British, they have erected a huge perimeter fence around the entrance to the Channel Tunnel, though I fear a razor wire fence is not enough. They will need machine guns and a very high concrete wall. Meanwhile, out in eastern Ukraine, they are putting up fences and tank traps to keep the Russians out. They will probably need a 10m high concrete wall, Israel style.

Much of the US-Mexico barrier (much more than a fence, that is for sure) is already built along the border and The Donald says he will make Mexico pay. Similarly, you can make the Canadians pay for the barrier along the northern border, on pain of having the US Army come in and affect Regime Change if they don’t. While they are there, the army could deal with all those scumbag Canadian socialists, the sort who vote for or are members of the NDP.

Speaking of Israel’s Separation Barrier, it will be about 650km long when completed. That is about a tenth of the length of the US-Canada border, but Israel’s population and GDP is only a few percent of that of the USA. Anything Israel can do, surely the USA can do better?

One formidable fence I have passed through is that between China and Pakistan. That serves to keep Muslim infiltrators out of China, has two parallel chain-mesh fences, topped, by razor wire, with a mess of razor wire between, and guarded by men with AK-47s. That appears to keep the Muslims out, but Israel’s solution would be better. There is a similar fence on the China-Kazakhstan border.

Another barrier I have been through a number of times was the Berlin Wall. That was thrown up by the East Germans in a few months, was a double wall with a minefield between and patrolled by guards with submachineguns. However, it was not high enough and had too many ways through, so some thousands of people escaped to the West. You want something more effective than that.

The cost of a very substantial fence might be $20000 per kilometre (minefields and surveillance towers would be extra), for a wall might cost a million. But even for the entire length of the US-Canada border, the cost of a concrete separation barrier would be chicken feed. Even the Canadians could pay it without any particular problem. Of course, the Alaska-Canada border would also need reinforcing, though for some reason that seems of no concern. I don’t believe the US has a problem with infiltration from Canada into Alaska. In any case, most of that border is too remote for people to just walk over and find comfortable circumstances on the other side. A short fence near Skagway would probably be enough. Similarly, the border station near Tok could have a substantial fence leading out into the muskeg, with some hungry bears encouraged to hang out and watch for infiltrators.

By the way, in addition to closing land borders and international flights, the USA could ban all imports. The savings from that action alone could pay the billions for the border separation barrier.

Charles Poyntan:

Your comments make sense in part and also are absurd. Maybe it is just satire. Mexico could pay for the wall, not by direct payment by the US not sending certain assistance funds such as Anti-drug
funding and other aid. Put funds in escrow and the divert to construction costs. Army engineer bns and Navy CB bns can work wonders if given the word. Trump also know a lot about concrete construction. Additional funding could be a charge for all remittances sent to Mexico or any other country. Exclude earned entitlement transfers of retirees. Since much of the money is earned without tax payment in the US, this would be a way of recouping some revenue otherwise lost from account..

@Unadapted: Trolls leave abuse under a pen-name or avatar. Unlike quite a few commentators here, I use my real name and try very hard, even faced with extreme abuse, to be polite. So who is the troll, eh?

Many years ago, a US Consul who also happened to be a personal friend, issued me with a tourist visa to the US. In so doing, he warned me to not express any political opinions, lest I meet a similar end to Easy Rider. So, when I make my occasional visits, I follow his advice and keep my mouth shut. So much for the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

So you Americans do not like foreigners to have any opinions about US politics. Fair enough. You should have a logon requirement to give your social security number so the likes of me cannot join the debate. You could even use IP address barring to prevent anyone outside the US from seeing your websites. Similarly, you could follow the Chinese and North Korea example and prevent anyone in the US being aware of the Rest of the World, what we think or do, or even that we exist.

EL Coyote
EL Coyote
January 22, 2016 12:02 am

I would be the last person to push anybody off this site. My protest was against the high cost, low return of a wall. It might be good politically but who has the money? The same folks who pretend to be conservatives want to spend the public’s money to satisfy their lust for ethnic cleansing.

Here’s another bitch I had yesterday:

How smart was it to provide a welfare incentive to make it easy for men to abandon their obligation to raise their family? The public ended up paying for that shit. We can blame that fiasco on the liberal-minded.

How smart is it to deport half of a nuclear family when the public will end up paying for the dependents left without a wage-earner? We may yet blame that fiasco on self-satisfied ‘conservatives’.

So, when I bitch about your wanting to satisfy your lust for a pure white nation with the public’s money, it’s because you won’t consider the damage you would cause when you try to convert the USA into a West Berlin with double walls, concertina wire, minefields and multiple Charles check Poynts which you are only to happy to impose on America.

Charles Poynton
Charles Poynton
January 22, 2016 1:20 am

@EL Coyote: Well, you are a bit off-target and the sort of comment a troll would make.

From my frame of reference, “socialist” is a compliment. President Hollande is a socialist, as are the leaders and members of Labour and Social Democratic Parties throughout Europe, Australasia, Japan and even the NDP in Canada. I do not consider the Communist Party of China to be socialist. “Fascist” describes a significant proportion of the US Republican Party and the US public. It would also be an appropriate epithet to extent to President Xi of China and Putin in Russia. I am a sort of wishy-wishy green social democrat. I often vote Labour in elections, but more likely Green. These are not options available in the US (or Chinese or Russian) political system.

In the summer of 2014, I travelled around Europe (about the 5th time actually). I rejoiced in being able to pass through frontiers that were previously closed and now one can drive through at 120 kph. You only have to stop to pay for the motorway tolls, usually a sticker called a “vignette” purchased at the border. But there are problems. Gangs of n’er-do-wells are travelling into western Europe, stealing cars or ransacking houses, then driving back to Eastern Europe unimpeded. The old Iron Curtain has been replaced by a fence that would be incapable of containing sheep, let alone determined humans. I commented at the time that I thought they needed more border security: fences that would be a problem to climb over, together with a sign warning that it is an international frontier and prescribing punishments for illegal crossings. When one arrives at a border on the motorway, I would think it reasonable to produce identification and show that the car or truck you were driving and its contents belonged to you.

Some of my European friends thought my ideas were a bit politically incorrect. Now, everyone is rushing to throw up barriers to keep Muslim refugees out.

Frankly, I think high concrete border walls are a travesty, particularly that being erected by Israel (to keep the Muslims out). Putting up a huge wall along the Mexican border is doable, as the Israelis have shown, but not likely to win the USA any friends in Latin America. I only suggested a Canadian border wall to highlight the problem with the entire concept. And just how is the US going to keep the Syrian refugees that Justin Trudeau welcomed to Montreal Airport from entering the US? The only guarantee would be a high wall.

Maybe, somewhere in the US, someone with a brain can sort out how to fix the country’s relationshop with Islam. My GG grandfather was a British diplomat who had extensive dealings with the Turks and Egyptians in the 1850s – 1890s. So far as I can see, the relationship between the West and these countries was quite comfortable until the UK foreign minister Balfour (without discussing it with the PM or cabinet) made a declaration in 1917 supporting the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine. By 1948, the British were painfully aware of the mistake they had made, but could not do much about it. The rest is history.

And, by the way, I feel that Mexico was done a huge injustice in 1846, with the US stealing half the country’s land mass. A Mexican I once lived with considered that Mexico was somewhat surreptitiously taking that land back.

Yeah, we have heard of the ‘reconquista’. Whatever. It is a fantasy of college-age idiots.

I replied to your proposal of fencing the USA in. It would be just another nail in the coffin of the once free country.

That Europe has been experiencing some problems with open borders is terrible, they dreamt of having a United States of Europe but are now dealing with unintended consequences. Welcome to our world.

Someday, our politicos will come out of the closet as fascists and communists and we will embrace them as our saviors.

Ethnic cleansing will be carried out in an orderly fashion.

Collaborators will be surprised to find themselves on the wrong end of the gun.

I put one of my lady rabbits in his cage to see if he was interested and while he seemed willing, he can’t lift his poor head and make a go of it. However, the LADY bunny got herself all worked up and started thumping and presenting. When he didn’t respond, she just climbed on top of HIM and humped away, then threw herself off in an exhausted heap. The Chinese built and maintained a Great Wall along their northern border during the 14th – 19th centuries. This served to keep the barbarians of central and northern Asia out of their homeland, though ultimately breached of occasion. But their dynasties lasted longer than the entire history of the USA.

The western terminus of the Great Wall was at the great fortress of Jiayuguan, way out in the Gobi Desert. Beyond its huge gates was nothing but hundreds of kilometres of waterless sand and stone which any intending invader had to cross before facing the high, thick and very well-defended ramparts. But occasional individuals and parties possessing permits from the Emperor were allowed in through the gates. Others, also in possession of a laisser-passer, could exit through them on diplomatic and trading missions to the West.

Corrupt, disloyal and criminal officials were also expelled from China through these gates. From that point, they wandered off into the desert, either to die or to make a new life in exile. Perhaps The Donald’s walls along the Mexican and Canadian borders could have gates through which foreigners, gangsters, drug deviants and people he did not like could be exiled from the US, never to return. They could make new lives in Mexico and Canada, or else die of thirst or cold.

@EL Coyote: US presidents and their minions have been doing “extraordinary renditions” for the last fourteen years, in case that has escaped your notice. They have been imprisoning individuals they did not like at Guantanamo, holding them blindfolded and in solitary confinement, beating them up occasionally and really, really wanting to execute them. Surely you do not enjoy the sight of this? Pushing them over the border into Mexico, Canada or Cuba would be very humane by comparison.

Charles Poynton

January 24, 2016 2:35 am

Not me that is Goebbels, but young GW Bush and his White House mafia. I am just telling you what they did and the US Supreme Court was OK with it. So were the American public and the Congress.

In civilized countries, we do not lock up people without charge for decades in solitary confinement, chained hand and foot, blindfolded. The US is not a civilized country by that standard.

Indeed, the US has a prison population/capita five or six times that of most OECD countries. You bet a lot of them are in on trumped up charges and plea-bargained themselves to *only* 5 – 10 years rather than 20 – life for something they never did. They would probably love to be pushed over the border into Canada.

Of course, a Goebbels fan like yourself would probably just put all of the US prison population in the gas chambers.
