As soon as gov’t got in the act providing/guaranteeing college loans, college costs started their exponential rise.

Why ?…….defaults were backed up by the taxpayer.

Spends entire argument denouncing government involvement with increased cost of college, asks government to fix problem.

If this were an entrance exam, you’d fail.

I think the blue-blocked person responding is right on point. And I disagree HF, I think you are making assumptions about what they want. I think the government could fix the college cost problem by ending most or all student loan programs, and telling colleges that if they want to be eligible for any government money at all, they need to lower tuition to x dollars today and limit future increases to the rate of inflation. That is government action, but potentially useful action.

And it leaves the free market – a college that is sufficiently arrogant (like Summers’ haunt) can say no thanks, keep tuition at the price of a new Lexus each year and see where it takes them. (Of course if you pay attention you know that the institutions that claim to be wealthy and independent are, generally, the ones most capable of sucking at the government tit before everyone else, while pretending they don’t.)

This guy does a good job trashing the university system from the inside.

Fat-cat administrators, multi-million dollar Admin buildings and “adjunct” professors at the food bank.

My GI Bill paid for the ENTIRETY of four years of college. FREE SHIT RULES, BABY!!

Well, “free”, if giving up four fucking years of your life counts for nothing.

Of course, that probably couldn’t happen today. College was actually AFFORDABLE back in 1975. I feel sorry for graduating high school seniors in today’s environment. They have a much, much rougher field to till than I did.

You can’t even go to a Tech School to take training in a whatever without the ass drip money sphincters demanding you take courses in English ,Math and blah blah blah, first. Significantly adding to the cost of tuition, of course.Tech Schools are considered colleges now and demand the big tuition fees to prove it, unless you’re underprivileged. Then you receive a stipend from the governemnt for attending. No one escapes the clutches of financialization.

Here’s how you fix the broken college system: Complete Boycott of secondary education institutions.

I have 2 college age children that I hope will never buy into the bs. My daughter went to a 4 yr. college for her first year. Cost: $16,000. Curriculum (required) Rehashing everything she learned in AP classes in high school, oh, and a required course in College social life……OMG.
As flash mentioned above, even Tech schools are a rip off nowadays. Can someone please explain to me the advantages of a college education? I mean if everyone has to have a college degree, then in effect it is no better than a high school diploma. It’s impossible to justify.

By the way, both of my kids are working full time, paying for their own apartments, cars, insurance etc.
My daughter works 2 jobs and my son has risen through the ranks at his job. They are 22 and 24.

Stucky- Giving up four years of sitting at home and masturbating in lieu of sitting around the barracks masturbating was a FAIR trade off for a college edumacshun.

You want an education, say, for free?

http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

MIT offers it’s entire course offerings for free.

The hitch?

You have to want the education enough to do it yourself and even if you ace the entire thing, no degree.

It isn’t about an education, it’s about a credential.

HSF,
You nailed it. Virtually all that information is out there for free and can easily be distributed much more efficiently than the old bricks and mortar model, but then what would all the administrators and shitty professors do?
Bob.
