The people that supported him had their own subversive reasons. Most of the Jews that supported him were also leftists ideologues. Topics like this are one of the reasons I’m a regular at TBP. Thanks to Rose for very informative and well-written posts. Much of it was review, but nonetheless, Rose’s posts added much value to this discussion.
To answer the question, MLK had good intentions. There were, as Rose wrote, “egregious civil rights violations occurring in America.” MLK was an African-American who saw his ethnic brethren suffering, and he wanted to see that end.
He did however choose questionable affiliates, and to be aligned with CPUSA at the height of the Cold War was not bound to be a PR success. Granted, one may argue that communism offered an alternative to the realities of the western world insofar the treatment of minorities, but the leaders of the communist world were all too willing to dupe gullible “revolutionaries” with promises of utopian equality and egalitarianism. MLK probably fell for this ruse.
His non-belief in the core tenets of Christianity, his known plagiarism (divulged in a 1991 New York Times article) and Boston University’s refusal to revoke his Ph.D., his now notorious behavior with women… all of these show that mythologies surrounding historical figures need to be peeled away. Sacred cows become “sacred” because they serve a purpose – they fit the goals of a specific agenda.
To African-Americans, MLK is the messiah of the civil rights movement – and while they definitely had legitimate gripes and complaints, he was far from the saintly leader he’s been made out to be since his death. As for me, I will patiently await for the release of his files in 2027. I speculate many people will be horrified then, and the cognitive dissonance (on the part of those who will be both sufficiently brave and intellectually honest) will be tremendous.
